Historic racing cars were among the top performers at today’s sale. The 1964 Shelby Cobra 289ci Competition Roadster inspired fierce bidding in the room, on the telephones, and online, eventually selling for £1,390,000 – a European auction record for the marque – to a buyer on the telephone while the striking ex-TWR JaguarSport 1990 Jaguar XJR-11 Group C Sports Prototype sold for £1,191,000, a world record for the model at auction. A further notable highlight was the elegant 1955 Rolls-Royce Phantom IV State Landaulette, previously used by HM The Queen, that subsequently sold for £800,000.

The ex-Alan Mann Racing 1968-69 Type Ford P68 ‘F3L’ Group 6 Endurance Racing Coupé sold for £511,750 to a bidder who had tried it for size - with his race helmet - the previous day, and the striking ex-Maserati works team Fiat-Bartoletti Tipo 624 Racing Car Transporter that starred in the Steve McQueen film Le Mans sold for £402,500.

British marques performed very strongly across the board, with the 1937 Jaguar SS100 3½-Litre Roadster achieving £631,000, a European auction record, the 1960 Aston Martin DB4 to GT Specification selling for £563,500. The 1989 Aston Martin V8 Vantage X-Pack Sports Saloon sold for £345,000 and the 1933 Rolls-Royce 40/50hp Phantom II Continental Sedanca Coupé for £345,000.

Iconic designs – both classic and modern – performed consistently well throughout the sale, with models such as the 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster achieving £754,200 and the ex-Keith Richards 1972 Ferrari 246 GT ‘Dino’ Coupé selling for well above estimate at £442,750, a world record for this specification at auction

- 1924 Bugatti type 30 Two-Seater Racer sold for £540,500

PACKARDS AND PRIVATE COLLECTIONS LEAD HIGHLIGHTS FOR
RM AUCTIONS’ HERSHEY SALE
OFFERING INCLUDES 11 MOTOR CARS FROM THE LLOYD NEEDHAM COLLECTION
  • RM Auctions presents exceptional Packard models and well-known private collections at Hershey, 11-12 October
  • 12th annual sale is an internationally-attended highlight of the AACA Eastern Division Fall Meet
  • Additional motor cars from the Richard L. Burdick Collection also on offer
  • An updated list of all entries for the Hershey sale available at rmsothebys.com

RM Auctions is delighted to announce highlights for the company’s 12th annual Hershey sale, set for 11-12 October at Hershey Lodge in Pennsylvania.
Each October, all roads lead to Hershey, where RM Auctions will again present an exceptional array of American Veteran, Brass, Classic, and post-war automobiles during the Antique Automobile Club of America’s (AACA) Eastern Division Fall Meet. A mainstay on the global collector car calendar, drawing enthusiasts from across North America, Europe, and beyond, this year’s auction offering comprises more than 140 motor cars and a wide selection of more than 80 lots of automobilia.
RM’s Hershey sale has long been known for its presentation of cars from well-known North American collectors, and the 2018 sale is no exception. RM Auctions is pleased to present 11 motor cars from the Lloyd Needham Collection at Hershey, entirely without reserve. The late Mr. Needham was well-known for his many years in the hobby and his true love of his collection and was an early customer of Rob Myers and RM Auto Restoration, forming a relationship that would last more than 35 years. The group of cars on offer is led by a 1936 Packard Twelve Convertible Victoria, equipped with its original body, engine and chassis and wearing a well-maintained high-quality restoration in striking colors (Est. $225,000 - $275,000), and a well-optioned and accessorized 1948 Chrysler Town and Country Convertible in the rare, special-order color of Noel Green Metallic (Est. $120,000 - $140,000).

Every year, we look forward to returning to Hershey, where genuine enthusiasm for the collector car hobby is alive and well,” says Gord Duff, Global Head of Auctions, RM Sotheby’s Group. “For years now, our Hershey event has been a true auction destination for private collections and as the market leader in single owner segment sales, this year’s Hershey auction is both emblematic and exciting for that reason. We always look forward to this auction in particular as it allows our team an opportunity to loosen the ties, have a BBQ and enjoy great cars and with our fellow passionate collectors and enthusiasts.”
An exceptional Packard also leads 19 additional American motors cars offered entirely without reserve from The Richard L. Burdick Collection at Hershey, following success for the collection at Auburn Fall. The 1931 Packard Custom Eight Roadster wears its original numbers-matching chassis and engine, as well as the sportiest body style from one of the great Packard years. Clothed in a well-maintained older AACA National First Prize-winning restoration, the Packard features numerous desirable accessories and would be a superb choice for light freshening and continued showing (Est. $180,000 - $240,000). Additional highlights from the collection include a 1901 Oldsmobile Model R ‘Curved Dash’ Runabout, originally won by five-year-old Victor F. Hitz via a nickel raffle ticket at the Chicago Automobile Show. Hitz held on to the car for the remainder of his long life, with his heirs passing it on to Richard L. Burdick in just 1984. One of the most original examples of its kind offered in decades, the Oldsmobile begs for continued preservation and display (Est. $50,000 - $75,000). Also on offer is the late Mr. Burdick’s1916 Hudson Series H Super Six Great Race Car. A fierce, long-time participant, officiant, and former owner of the event, Mr. Burdick was devoted to the Great Race. One of the most exciting vehicles in the collection, the Hudson was the winner of the 2000 Great Race and would be an ideal, potentially victorious rally competitor for its next owner (Est. $75,000 - $100,000).

Outside of the private collections, additional spectacular Packard models are set to shine at Hershey, including a 1941 Packard Custom Super Eight One Eighty Convertible Victoria by Darrin, one of just 35 examples built for the model year. With documented known ownership history since new, the Super Eight One Eighty was shown at the 1956 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and has been beautifully maintained all its life (Est. $350,000 - $425,000).

An incredible selection of fast Ford's will be heading to auction at the September Sale, including a very special 2006 Ford GT, a restored 1972 Ford Escort RS1600 an incredibly rare 1986 Ford Sierra Cosworth Wolf RS500 and a 1990 Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 with only 13,310 miles. The sale is taking place at the Dallas Burston Polo Club on 29th September.

The 2006 Ford GT heading to auction is one of only 27 UK-delivered examples and has covered just over 5,000 miles, which has included memorable trips to Le Mans. Powered by a hand-built 5.4-litre supercharged V8 engine with an amazing 550BHP the GT is capable of a top speed of 205MPH and goes from 0 to 60MPH in just 3.5 seconds. Estimated at £230,000 to £260,000, this GT is immaculately finished in the iconic colour combination of white with racing blue stripes and a black leather interior.
“Fords have the unique quality of universal appeal, with their popularity stretching from the entry level Escort models all the way to their iconic supercar, the GT”, says Harry Whale, classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions. “Ford’s success and dedication to motorsports not only filled their trophy cabinet but has delivered a fantastic selection of motorsport derived special editions for enthusiasts. The idea of ‘win on Sunday, sell on Monday’ has never been truer than with Ford.”

The 1972 Ford Escort RS1600 on offer at the sale is one of the few remaining of its kind on the road today. Estimates suggest that only around 1,137 RS1600s were produced in total with many being converted to rally and race cars. The car on offer has come from a full, ground-up restoration with stunning results, carried out by renowned marque expert, Andy Stapley Motorsport. Finished in Le Mans Greens with a black cloth interior which is completely standard, the car presents in phenomenal condition. Estimated at £60,000 to £70,000, the Escort has covered just 3,525 miles since the restoration took place.

As one of only 10 Sierra RS Cosworths uprated by the official Ford Works DTM team, the 1986 Wolf RS500 in the sale was built to satisfy a number of Ford fanatics who craved a left hand drive RS500 for the German market. The upgrades were undertaken by Wolf Racing for Ford and included a 300BHP engine upgrade, racing pistons, green injectors, a racing wastegate, a steel twin exit exhaust, lowered sports suspension and gold DTM style wheels along with the usual RS500 body and interior upgrades. All of the Wolf RS500s were finished in Moonstone Blue. The car on offer was imported to the UK in early 2018 and presents excellently, covering just 24,000 miles and is estimated at £37,000 to £42,000.

The 1990 Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 available at the sale is believed to be one of the first six 4x4 models made available. Finished in Magenta with a grey cloth interior the Cosworth was first registered on 1st August 1990 in Essex. The Cosworth has travelled a mere 13,310 miles at the hands of its sole owner, who at the age of 80 has decided to hang up her driving gloves for good. Estimated at £30,000 to £35,000, the Sierra was recently recommissioned at the hands of Rally Tec Cosworth Specialists at a cost in excess of £5,000 in preparation for the sale.

CCA FIRES UP TV QUATTRO FOR CHARITY AUCTION

CCA FIRES UP TV QUATTRO FOR CHARITY AUCTION

  • 1984 Audi Quattro Turbo 10V to be auctioned for cancer charities
  • The car previously restored on Channel 4’s Car S.O.S
  • CCA to auction the car on 15th September at the Warwickshire Event Centre

Classic Car Auctions (CCA), will auction a special 1984 Audi Quattro Turbo, which once featured in Channel 4’s Car S.O.S, to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and the Mesothelioma UK Trust as part of its upcoming September Sale on Saturday 15thSeptember at the Warwickshire Event Centre.
One of the most iconic and popular modern classics on the market, the restored Quattro Turbo is expected to raise over £20,000 for the charities after being left to them by its last owner, Barry Hollamby, who passed away in 2016 after a long illness with asbestos-related cancer.
“We’re absolutely honoured to have been entrusted with the sale of this very special Audi Quattro,” explained Gary Dunne, auction manager, CCA. “We know that Barry treasured his Quattro over the years and that it was his wish that it be sold to benefit these two charities. We hope to do Barry’s legacy justice and raise important funds for these two invaluable charities.”
The right-hand drive, 2.1L 1984 Audi Quattro Turbo 10V manual was owned by Barry for 14 years and has had five owners from new. During Barry’s ownership, the car was even featured in Series 3 of Channel 4’s popular Car S.O.S, which saw Tim Shaw and Fuzz Townsend restore the car at a time when his poor health left him unable to complete work on the car himself. The Audi was returned to Barry in the presence of his family and friends in the emotional and memorable episode.
James Stebbings, Head of Legacy Income at Macmillan Cancer Support, explains; “Last year gifts in wills accounted for almost a third of Macmillan’s income. As a charity that receives no government funding and relies entirely on the generosity of the public, we are hugely grateful for donations such as the fantastic car left by Barry. Every penny raised will be used to support people with cancer to live life as fully as they can.”
Meanwhile, Jill Lemon from Mesothelioma UK Charitable Trust commented; “We are a national specialist resource centre, specifically for asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. The generosity and support from Barry as well as CCA will help us to promote the development of specialist mesothelioma nursing practice and fund the 18 specialist nursing posts around the UK.”
The charity Audi Quattro will be auctioned showing 96,000 miles with a sale estimate of £20,000 to £25,000. To find out more about the 1984 Audi Quattro Turbo 10V for sale and how to bid during the auction, visit https://www.classiccarauctions.co.uk/audi-quattro-wr.

COYS BRING THEIR TRADITIONAL SELECTION OF EXCELLENT MOTOR CARS TO FONTWELL HOUSE

COYS BRING THEIR TRADITIONAL SELECTION OF EXCELLENT MOTOR CARS TO FONTWELL HOUSE

Coys bring their traditional selection of excellent motor cars to Fontwell House for their Goodwood Motor Circuit Revival Race Meeting Sale.
Coys, the International Auction House will once again be packing the sumptuous surroundings of Fontwell House with some of the most desirable automotive offerings from across the globe. Amongst the exciting motor cars on offer, some of the gems that truly stand out are the 1977 Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina, a 1973 Trojan T101 and a 1935 MG PA Airline Coupe.
1977 Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina
The Ferrari Vetroresina has been meticulously looked after over the years. With only one previous owner from new, it is a very rare UK right-hand drive specification Ferrari. It is finished in Nero over Nero, this car is not only a very fun car to drive, but also extremely rare and as such an excellent investment opportunity. Estimated £130,000-150,000.
The 1973 Trojan T101 is one of five such cars produced by Trojan for the Formula 5000 regulations of the time. It was built for the 1973 season on behalf of Ian Ward Racing and driven by Keith Holland. This car was entered for Keith Norris’s F5000 revival series in 1983, later at the “Southampton Ocean Village Sprint” in 1987, before being placed into storage for almost 30 years. Since being returned to superb race-worthy order, this very car has won its class in the highly competitive HSCC Derek Bell Trophy. The estimate is £75,000 – 95,000.
1967 Specification 330 P4 roadrace car
For anyone not quite so racing minded, but with arguably even more “presence” than the Trojan, Coys are especially delighted to offer an astonishing survivor of the “Art Deco” period, and an original 1935 MG PA with exquisite “Carbodies” Airline Coupe coachwork. It was designed by H.W. Allingham and subsequently marketed by him. In total it is believed that a mere 51 were ever constructed, with the majority of those cars being built on the four-cylinder MG PA and PA series. Estimated £70,000 – £90,000.
A 1970 Citroen Mehari is also going under the hammer. This wonderful car was imported from Spain in 2017 where the previous owners had undertaken a sympathetic restoration of the car. This work included a new hood and side screens as well as re-upholstering the interior. Currently, the car shows approximately 37,000kms on the odometer. The estimate is £10,000 – 12,000.
A car representing the absolute pinnacle of post-World War Two British motoring ingenuity is the 1947 Allard K1. It is one of only 7 road going K1’s in the UK today, among the 151 originally produced. This car was completely rebuilt in the late 1990’s and used regularly by its then owner, John Aldridge. In its current ownership since 2013, it has won the Allard Owners Club Concours twice and picked up “The Best Allard to Take Home” award, as voted by the members. Estimated £65,000- £75,000.

ROLLING STONE FERRARI DINO ORIGINALLY OWNED BY KEITH RICHARDS AT BONHAMS GOODWOOD REVIVAL SALE

ROLLING STONE
FERRARI DINO ORIGINALLY OWNED BY KEITH RICHARDS AT BONHAMS GOODWOOD REVIVAL SALE

The ex-Keith Richards 1972 Ferrari Dino 246GT. Estimated at £300,000-400,000.

On 8th September 2018, Bonhams will be holding their annual Goodwood Revival sale. On offer this year is a 1972 Ferrari Dino 246GT first bought by rock ‘n’ roll royalty Keith Richards. Estimated at £300,000-400,000.
If Richards couldn’t get no “Satisfaction” in 1965, it was because he hadn’t yet bought the Dino.  A car of sensational automotive design, the 2.4 litre, 175-hp V-6 engine, with a 5-speed manual gearbox, was made especially for the American market and bought new by Richards in February 1972. So fond was Richards of the car that three years later the Dino travelled across the pond with him, from California to London, and was driven around the streets of Chelsea by the Rolling Stones’ guitarist until 1986, when it was then purchased by a prestigious Japanese collector.
This model oozes 1970s glamour with black leather interiors and sultry Argento silver paintwork, befitting of a rockstar at the height of his fame.  Despite Richards confessing he didn’t like to be the "fastest gun in the west" on his guitar strings, when it came to cars it would seem the faster the better- 148 mph to be exact. The Dino’s mid- to rear engine design is traditionally suited to life on the track, however, the 246GT makes the racing car fantasy a reality for non-professional drivers with an innate ability to tame the Dino’s racy handling.
Sholto Gilbertson, Director of Motor Cars at Bonhams says “If you want to feel like a Rock God, this is the car for you. The stunning low-sloping bonnet, purring engine power and 0 – 50 mph acceleration time of 5.5 seconds makes the1972 Ferrari Dino 246GT a very attractive choice.”
