This past week, RM Auctions, a division of RM Sotheby’s Group, achieved strong results for the auction house’s 13^th annual Hershey sale, generating $15,569,594 with 97 per cent of all lots sold. Held during the world-renowned Antique Automobile Club of America’s (AACA) Eastern Division Fall Meet, the two-evening auction saw more than 200 historic automobiles, offered in large part from significant single-owner collections, alongside a wide array of memorabilia cross the auction stage. A packed auction room, enthusiastic bidding, and strong prices were seen on Thursday and Friday evening, with bidders hailing from no less than 23 countries, and nearly 25 per cent of bidders representing first-time RM Sotheby’s Group clientele.

The star lot of the Hershey sale was a 1930 Cadillac V-16 Sport Phaeton by Fleetwood, which represented an opportunity to acquire arguably the most famous, well-known surviving V-16 sport phaeton. Featured in the 1964 film The Carpetbaggers and believed to have been originally owned by legendary silver-screen actor Richard Arlen, the V-16 ignited a furious competition between a bidder in the room and on the phone, eventually securing a final $1,221,000 to applause from the crowd on Friday (est. $900k/1.1m). Rounding out the top three sellers was a one-of-six 1931 Marmon Sixteen Coupe offered from the Collection of Jack Dunning and complete with its original body, engine, and chassis at a final $550,000, while a remarkably rare, highly original, and beautifully restored 1911 Oldsmobile Model 28 Autocrat Roadster offered from the noted collection of Mr Jim Bradley reached a final $495,000.

The auction successfully kicked off on Thursday night with the session dedicated solely to The Merrick Auto Museum Collection, comprised of over 100 fascinating American Brass Era, high-wheeler, and pre-war cars, alongside a large selection of automobilia – offered entirely without reserve. The top seller of the collection was the 1925 Duesenberg Model A Four-Passenger Sport Phaeton by Millspaugh & Irish. Equipped with a race-bred overhead-cam eight-cylinder engine and formerly on display for 15 years at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum, the Model A sold for a final $236,500 (est. $150k/200k). During an exciting moment on Thursday night, the seldom-seen 1900 Rockwell Hansom Cab, the first motorized taxicab in New York City, incited spirited bidding in the auction room before selling for $132,000, shattering its pre-sale estimate of $35,000 - $45,000. Additional Thursday highlights include a Paris-built 1900 De Dion-Bouton Type E Vis-à-Vis Voiturette, which achieved $121,000, a 1916 Rauch & Lang JX-6 Dual Control Electric Coach, which brought $110,000, more than doubling its pre-sale high estimate, and an eye-catching 1930 Cord L-29 Brougham, which sold for $103,400 (est. $50k/75k).

Interesting and unusual motor cars also starred at RM Auctions Hershey sale, with a pair of vintage trucks from The William B. Ruger Jr. Collection firing up the audience on Friday evening. The first, a 1924 American LaFrance Type 40 Combination Truck, was offered from 65 years of ownership under the Ruger family and sold for $115,500 to a bidder in the room (est. $35k/45k). A well-maintained 1936 American LaFrance 'Senior' 400 Series Squad Truck, equipped with a powerful 240 hp overhead-cam V-12 engine, also successfully sold to a participant in the auction room, achieving $82,500 (est. $40k/60k).

Beyond the cars, the Hershey sale featured 128 lots of memorabilia, signage, vintage motor car parts, original artwork, and ephemera. Among a host of fascinating pieces were the Hot Air Balloon Ceiling Fans offered from the Merrick Auto Museum Collection, which soared past their estimate to a final price of $6,037 on Thursday night (est. $800/1,200). The Ferrari Cavallino Porcelain Dinnerware Set by Richard Ginori opened a sustained bidding contest between three bidders on the phone and one in the room on Friday, eventually more than tripling its pre-sale high estimate and bringing $18,400 (est. $4k/6k). Friday also saw several vintage toy cars go under the hammer and surpass pre-sale estimates, with a pair of Buddy L Trucks achieving a final $2,300 (est. $300/400).

We also saw continued lively bidding in the auction room and from clients participating remotely via phone and internet for rare cars from single-owner collections offered without reserve. We could not be more pleased with this year’s results, a show of strength for the Brass and Classic era market.”

RM Auctions is delighted to announce that it will present the respected Merrick Auto Museum Collection, entirely without reserve, at its 13^th annual Hershey sale, held on Thursday 10 October - Friday, 11 October during the Antique Automobile Club of America’s (AACA) Eastern Division Fall Meet, with the Thursday evening auction dedicated to the collection. 

Jim Merrick and his son, Richard, first started their collection more than 25 years ago in Nebraska with 11 fully restored antique automobiles, officially incorporating The Merrick Auto Museum in 1992. Over the years, they transformed their small assembly of cars, with the help of grandson Russell, into a diverse collection of over 100 fascinating American Brass Era, high-wheeler, and pre-war cars spanning from 1900 to the late 1930s, alongside a wide array of memorabilia, signage, vintage motor car parts and ephemera. As avid automobile enthusiasts with a passion for both the hobby and the history of the industry, the Merrick family has extensively researched every car and piece of memorabilia they acquired, amassing a full research library.

Offered publicly for the very first time, the Merrick Auto Museum Collection focuses on the early decades of motoring featuring significant pre-war cars alongside many of the rare electric, steam and gas vehicles are known today as orphan cars – built by manufacturers that have discontinued business entirely. Leading the group is a matching-numbers 1925 Duesenberg Model A Touring by Millspaugh & Irish with a three-speed sliding gear transmission, straight-eight engine and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, making it one of the first American automobiles to be so-equipped. Formerly of the Harrah Automobile Collection, chassis no. 1080 joined the Merrick Collection in 1996 – the same year it starred as the Auburn Cord Duesenberg (ACD) Club Festival poster car. Ideal for ACD and CCCA activities, this car will shine in any classic motor car collection.

An Edwardian Era highlight is the 1900 De Dion-Bouton Series E Vis- à-Vis, one of the earliest automobiles within the Merrick Collection. Dating back almost 120 years, this pioneer automobile with remarkably modern features was built in France by the most famous early names in motoring: Count Albert de Dion, George Bouton, and Charles Trépardoux. The body style is a charming vis-à-vis or “face-to-face” with the passengers seated facing the driver, who rides atop the car’s 3.5-hp engine. Typical of a French automobile, the detail is extravagant and includes decorative grillwork cut into the body in floral patterns, dramatic flared fenders, and brass “De Dion Bouton” script. This attractive car is ready and eligible for many historic tours including the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. Another Veteran standout in the Merrick lineup is the historic 1900 Rockwell Hansom Cab. A staple of New York’s cobbled streets in the early 1900s, the opportunity to own this seldom-seen “working class car” should not be passed up. 

Also sure to steal the spotlight is the 1902 Gasmobile Stanhope, the first American luxury automobile and one of the fastest road cars in the early 1900s. Built by the Automobile Company of America in New York between 1899 and 1902, Gasmobiles are a true rarity. This two-passenger Stanhope is also eligible for the esteemed London to Brighton Veteran Car Run and equipped with an impressive three-cylinder engine, producing 10 horsepower under full load. Significantly, this example was a National First Prize winner in Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) competition in 1977.

     

Additional rarities featured within the Merrick Auto Museum Collection include an important early American plug-in electric car, the 1904 Pope-Waverley Chelsea, known in period as "by far the best Electric on the market". Producing 3-hp, this runabout model interestingly houses its single electric motor in the rear of the car. The seldom-seen 1906 Queen Model E on offer is believed to be one of fewer than 15 Model E examples produced. Powered by an opposed two-cylinder engine and finished in attractive blue, the Touring-bodied automobile certainly lives up to its royal name. A rare survivor from one of Detroit’s little-known early manufacturers, this example would be an ideal car for undertaking various one- and two-cylinder tours, including HCCA events. Rounding out the highlights is an exceptional turn of the century 1906 White Model F Touring sporting handsome touring coachwork. A leading manufacturer of steam cars for the first decade of the 20th Century, the White Company of Cleveland, Ohio, is most well-known for its innovative steam-powered automobiles.

HERSHEY, Pennsylvania (13 October 2018) – RM Auctions returned to Hershey this week (11-12 October) for the company’s 12^thannual sale coinciding with the Antique Automobile Club of America’s renowned Eastern Division Fall Meet. RM Auctions achieved an overall total of $10,999,096 across two evenings of spirited bidding at the Hershey Lodge, with a strong 94 percent of all lots sold.

Collectors and enthusiasts poured in from the swap meet field to the auction venue to view the nearly 150 motor cars and plentiful memorabilia on offer, with bidders hailing from 19 countries and 45 states across the U.S. Energy and interest were high across both Thursday and Friday evening sessions, with the top sale being the 1930 Cadillac V-16 Roadster. Offered with well-known, fascinating ownership history, elegantly presented, and authentically restored with a correct Fleetwood body, the Cadillac sold for a final $495,000, surpassing its pre-sale estimate of $400,000 - $450,000. The top three sellers also included a one-of-35 1941 Packard Custom Super Eight One Eighty Convertible Victoria by Darrin, which reached a final $357,500, and a 1934 Lincoln Model KB Convertible Sedan by Dietrich, one of just 25 examples built in its beautiful semi-custom style, which exceeded estimate at $286,000 (est. $225k/$275k).

“Hershey remains one of our favorite venues to return to, year after year,” said Gord Duff, Global Head of Auctions, RM Sotheby’s Group, following the sale. “Following days spent with collectors exhibiting true interest and passion for the hobby, we saw solid total results and an exceptional sell-through rate. On both Thursday and Friday, numerous individual lots of various categories achieved final prices well above their high estimate, demonstrating the very real interest in truly rare or exceptionally historic American motor cars.”

These stand-out individual results extended from memorabilia, through to the pair of the motorcycles on offer, as well as several automobiles. Kicking off Thursday sales on a strong note, the 1948 Playboy A48 Convertible, an unusual and very rare American post-war microcar, nearly doubled its high estimate at $132,000 (est. $55k/$75k), while just moments later an award-winning 1912 Baker Electric Model W Runabout, formerly of the Harrah and Raymond Carr Collections, sold to a new home for $192,500 against a pre-sale estimate of $85,000 - $100,000. Another electric vehicle, the 1917 Milburn Electric Model 27 Brougham, offered from the Richard L. Burdick Collection without reserve, also drew significant interest, reaching a final $63,250 (est. $25k/$35k). Later on Thursday, an exceptional 1960 Plymouth Fury Convertible, the 1960 Mexican International Auto Show car with a mere 22,000 original miles, ignited a furious competition between a bidder in the room and on the phone, eventually bringing $209,000 (est. $130k/$150k). 

On Friday evening, the auction again began with excitement as a 1912 Marion Model 33 Bobcat, a very rare and highly desirable survivor, sold for $132,000, soaring past its estimate of $60,000 - $90,000, closely followed by a 1957 Chevrolet Corvette ‘Fuel-Injected’ 283/283, which brought a final $159,500 after an extended bidding battle (est. $80k/120k). Finally, it was the one-off 1911 American Eagle Touring which saw perhaps the longest contest of the auction, with multiple bidders in the room and on the phone seeking to add this early piece of Detroit automotive history to their collection. The car was sold for a final $242,000, tripling its high estimate (est. $50k/$80k).

BLENHEIM, Ontario (24 September 2018) – RM Auctions has released the complete catalogue for the company’s 12^th annual Hershey sale, set for 11-12 October at Hershey Lodge in Pennsylvania during the Antique Automobile Club of America’s renowned Eastern Division Fall Meet. An established venue for the successful sale of Veteran, Brass, and Classic Era motor cars, the Hershey sale features 147 diverse automobiles as well as a wide range of automobilia, with nearly 80 percent of all lots offered without reserve.

Final entries for the Hershey sale are led by a number of Classic Era American greats, including a 1932 Marmon Sixteen Close-Coupled Sedan offered from a prominent private collection. Exhibiting both superb period styling and world-class engineering, the Sixteen could out-accelerate a Duesenberg Model J in period while costing its buyer just one-third as much. This particular car has several unusual and desirable features and was one of the first Sixteens equipped with vacuum-assisted power brakes. The Marmon eventually landed with Daniel E. “Hap” Motlow in 1982, who was, at the time, chairman of the Jack Daniels Distillery. Motlow commissioned the car’s restoration by the noted Reuter’s Coach Works, which still presents well today. Following Motlow’s passing, the car was sold by Sotheby’s to benefit Vanderbilt University and has since spent time in several important collections, passing to the current owner in 2006. Highly attractive and complete with its original chassis, engine, and body, the award-winning Marmon is worthy of further showings or starring on a Caravan (Est. $250,000 - $300,000). 

Latest highlights also include a 1934 Lincoln Model KB Convertible Sedan, offered from a prominent private collection and one of just 25 examples built in the beautiful “semi-custom” style. A lovely example of the Full Classic Lincoln and a longtime California car wearing a concours-quality restoration, the KB is offered with superb provenance and wonderful presentation (Est. $225,000 - $275,000). Rounding out the group is a 1936 Packard Twelve Coupe Roadster, believed to be the very first 14^th Series Twelve Coupe Roadster built. Featuring its original rear-mounted spare and chromed headlights, the Packard is an especially fine, properly sorted, and striking example of its type, offered from long-term, known enthusiast ownership and ready to enjoy (Est. $275,000 - $325,000).

An exceptional Packard also leads 19 additional American motors cars offered entirely without reserve from The Richard L. Burdick Collection at Hershey, following success for the collection at Auburn Fall. The 1931 Packard Custom Eight Roadster wears its original numbers-matching chassis and engine, as well as the sportiest body style from one of the great Packard years. Clothed in a well-maintained older AACA National First Prize-winning restoration, the Packard features numerous desirable accessories and would be a superb choice for light freshening and continued showing (Est. $180,000 - $240,000). Additional highlights from the collection include a 1901 Oldsmobile Model R ‘Curved Dash’ Runabout, originally won by five-year-old Victor F. Hitz via a nickel raffle ticket at the Chicago Automobile Show. Hitz held on to the car for the remainder of his long life, with his heirs passing it on to Richard L. Burdick in just 1984. One of the most original examples of its kind offered in decades, the Oldsmobile begs for continued preservation and display (Est. $50,000 - $75,000). Also on offer is the late Mr. Burdick’s1916 Hudson Series H Super Six Great Race Car. A fierce, long-time participant, officiant, and former owner of the event, Mr. Burdick was devoted to the Great Race. One of the most exciting vehicles in the collection, the Hudson was the winner of the 2000 Great Race and would be an ideal, potentially victorious rally competitor for its next owner (Est. $75,000 - $100,000).

Outside of the private collections, additional spectacular Packard models are set to shine at Hershey, including a 1941 Packard Custom Super Eight One Eighty Convertible Victoria by Darrin, one of just 35 examples built for the model year. With documented known ownership history since new, the Super Eight One Eighty was shown at the 1956 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and has been beautifully maintained all its life (Est. $350,000 - $425,000).

HERSHEY, Pennsylvania (October 11, 2014) – RM Auctions, the world’s largest collector car auction house for investment-quality automobiles, celebrated the annual AACA Eastern Division Fall Meet this week (October 9 – 10) with its best Hershey performance to date: $14,074,250 in total sales with a very strong 93 percent of all lots sold.

 

Generated by the sale of 157 vehicles and select memorabilia before a packed auction room, results from the two-day sale were driven by numerous spirited bidding contests both in the room and over the phones. Illustrating RM’s international clientele and reflecting the global appeal of the Hershey event, bidders hailed from 17 countries, with more than one quarter representing first-time clientele.

Highlighting Thursday evening’s sale session, top sale honors went to the 1930 Cadillac V-16 Roadster offered from the Cars of John Moir. Representing the ‘C’ in Moir’s unique A-to-Z Car Collection, the Cadillac had been in the Moir Family Car Barn since 1933. Proving that the car’s unparalleled history, quality and presentation were in high demand, it sold for an incredible $1,100,000 to applause from the crowd, establishing a new auction record for the marque. Offered entirely without reserve, the Cars of John Moir, which also included a special AC Master Class and select family cars in addition to his eclectic alphabet collection, generated fantastic results across the board.

 

“Selling a family collection is a large emotional challenge,” said Jim Moir, son of John Moir Jr. following the sale. “It’s been a pleasure and an honor to deal with the people at RM Auctions who understand that and who take the care to be emotionally supportive, responsible, and timely, making it a smooth and gratifying experience.”

 

He added, “I think the original owner of the V-16 Cadillac, my grandfather, John Moir Sr., would be very proud and very happy.”

 

Friday night’s sale session was headlined by the Jeffrey Day Collection. Attracting strong pre-sale interest, the group of 50 “best of category” vehicles garnered fantastic prices on the podium, led by a highly optioned, and beautifully restored 1956 Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria Skyliner ‘Glass Top’, for an outstanding $165,000, a new auction record for the model. Also commanding strong interest was the oldest lot of the sale, an expertly restored 1860 Abbott-Downing Stagecoach. A part of the Day Collection since 1971 and showing an amazing level of finish and detail throughout, the impressive survivor brought $330,000.

 

Additional highlights included a highly original 1905 FIAT 60 HP Five-Passenger Tourer, originally owned by August Anheuser Busch Sr., for $825,000, and a beautifully restored and well-maintained 1933 Chrysler CL Imperial Dual-Windshield Phaeton for $522,500.
