BONHAMS GOES FLAT-OUT WITH FEARLESS BIDDING AT GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED - £2.9 MILLION FOR 1935 ASTON MARTIN ULSTER

BONHAMS GOES FLAT-OUT WITH FEARLESS BIDDING
AT GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED - £2.9 MILLION
FOR 1935 ASTON MARTIN ULSTER

  • Bonhams Festival of Speed sale achieved an outstanding £17 million inclusive
  • The ultimate pre-war racer, “LM19” - the Ex-Works Aston Martin Ulster Team Car was the star lot of the sale, sold for £2,913,500
  • Also selling well, offered directly from legendary racing driver, Sir Stirling Moss, the incredible 1961 Porsche RS-61 Spyder Sports-Racing Two-Seater achieved £1,905,500
  • With just eight kilometres on the clock, the incredible Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster sold for an outstanding £1,513,500, whilst ex-Rolling Stone Bill Wyman’s 1971 Citröen SM Coupé sold for almost double estimate, achieving £61,980, and the ‘perfect’ Porsche, once the property of artist Richard Hamilton, sold for £393,500

Bonhams annual Festival of Speed Sale saw spectacular figures, with the ex-Works Racing Aston Martin Ulster Team Car, LM19, sold for £2,913,500, one of the highest amounts ever achieved for a pre-war British sports car and smashing the existing record (held by Bonhams) for a pre-War Aston Martin.

A pre-war ‘Works’ racing car of excellent provenance, the Ulster was built to compete at the highest level of endurance racing, with appearances at Le Mans, the Ards TT, the Mille Miglia, the RAC TT, and with the additional cherry on the cake being the 1936 French Grand Prix outing, driven by none other than the brilliant Dick Seaman.

James Knight, Bonhams Group Motoring Director and auctioneer on the day, said: “We’ve had another phenomenal sale at Goodwood, with excellent figures achieved across the board as we offered some highly sought after, truly top tier collectors’ motor cars.”

Top lot, the Aston Martin Ulster, saw a protracted three-way bidding battle between customers in the room and on the telephones, finally winning out to a European bidder. James Knight added, “It’s one of the highest figures ever achieved for a pre-war British sports cars, truly emphasizing the tremendous stature of the Aston Martin marque."

Elsewhere, a 1961 Porsche RS-61 Spyder offered by none other than ‘Mr Motor Racing’ himself, Sir Stirling Moss, sold for £1,905,500. One of the greatest racing drivers of all time, Sir Stirling was without doubt the standard-setting racing driver of his era, and is a multiple winner of World Championship Grand Prix and Sports Car races during his glittering frontline career. Sir Stirling described the Porsche RS60/61 series as having been “Just super cars – beautifully balanced and simply tailor-made for such races as the mighty Targa Florio around 440 miles of Sicilian mountain roads. That was one morning when I woke up and really could say to myself, ‘For today’s race you have got the ideal car’.”

Continuing the Porsche theme, owned for more than 30 years by ‘father of pop art’ Richard Hamilton, a 1973 Porsche 911S 2.4-litre Coupé sold for £393,500. Hamilton thought that the car’s shapely curves were a ‘perfect’ design, so he purchased it new in 1973, and kept it for three decades.

The fabulous Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster sold for an incredible £1,513,500. Unveiled in 1998, at the time the CLK most expensive production car ever built, a figure only recently exceeded by the Ferrari FXX. The model offered at Bonhams sale had a mere eight kilometres on the odometer, and was the very first example ever built.

Also in the sale, a 1984 Porsche 911 3.2-litre Carrera Coupé, belonging to former Top Gear presenter James May, sold for £51,750, and ex-Rolling Stone Bill Wyman’s 1966 Mercedes-Benz 250 S sold for £20,700, whilst his striking 1971 Citroën Maserati SM sold for almost double estimate at £61,980.

  • Bonhams sale features almost 90 cars from across the decades, with something for every collector
Bonhams Annual Festival of Speed Sale will once again offer a show-stopping selection of incredible classic motorcars - all available to the highest bidder.

Ex-Works Racing Aston Martin Ulster Team Car, LM19, is the highlight of the sale, estimated at £1,600,000-2,200,000. A pre-war ‘Works’ racing car of excellent provenance, it was built to compete at the highest level of endurance racing, with appearances at Le Mans, the Ards TT, the Mille Miglia, the RAC TT, and with the additional cherry on the cake being the 1936 French Grand Prix outing, driven by none other than the brilliant Dick Seaman.

The Bonhams sale includes several lots with ‘celebrity’ provenance, attracting motor car aficionados as well as fans. Former Top Gear presenter James May is offering a 1984 Porsche 911 3.2-litre Carrera Coupé, estimated at £28,000-34,000. May used the 911 as a 'hobby' car, in good weather, and in 2011, it was displayed at Top Gear Live. “It was donated to my dad to use for the past four years, as he never owned a proper sports car,” May revealed. “Recently he decided that he was getting on a bit to be seen in a retro stockbroker's car."

The property of James May - 1984 Porsche 911 3.2-litre Carrera Coupé

“As a 911, it's significant for being near the tail-end of the development of the original 1963 car. As a piece of social history, since it's Guards Red and has the sports pack, it stands as a monument to everything 1980s Britain was about. It's the 911 that Denis Thatcher would have driven, if he'd had one.”

From left: The property of Bill Wyman - 1971 Citroën Maserati SM; ex-Richard Hamilton 1973 Porsche 911S 2.4-litre Coupé

A 1966 Mercedes-Benz 250 S (£20,000-25,000) and a 1971 Citroën Maserati SM (£35,000-40,000) owned by founding member and former Rolling Stones bassist, Bill Wyman, are also offered. Wyman drove the cars to studios during the recording of several famous Rolling Stones albums, including the 1968 album Beggars Banquet, featuring the iconic trackSympathy for the Devil; the 1969 album Let it Bleed, featuring Gimme Shelter and You Can’t Always Get What You Want; the 1972 album Exile on Main St, featuring Rocks off, and the 1981 album Tattoo You, featuring Start Me Up.

Elsewhere, there is a 1973 Porsche 911S 2.4-litre Coupé, owned for more than 30 years by ‘father of pop art’ Richard Hamilton. Hamilton thought that the car’s shapely curves were a ‘perfect’ design, so he purchased it new in 1973, and kept it for three decades before passing it into the care of his son.  It remained in his possession until spring 2013, after which the Porsche was subject to a two-year sympathetic restoration, completed to concours standard by one of Europe's leading companies, Clarke & Carter. It is now offered at an estimate of £250,000-300,000.

Further highlights include a 1961 Porsche RS-61 Spyder, offered by none other than ‘Mr Motor Racing’ himself, Sir Stirling Moss. One of the greatest racing drivers of all time, Sir Stirling was without doubt the standard-setting racing driver of his time 1958-1962, and is a multiple winner of World Championship Grand Prix and Sports Car races during his glittering frontline career. Sir Stirling describes the Porsche RS60/61 series as having been “Just super cars – beautifully balanced and simply tailor-made for such races as the mighty Targa Florio around 440 miles of Sicilian mountain roads. That was one morning when I woke up and really could say to myself, ‘For today’s race you have got the ideal car’.”

Top Marques at Charterhouse Summer Classic Car Auction

Top Marques at Charterhouse Summer Classic Car Auction

The Charterhouse auction of classic and vintage cars has a great selection of vehicles including seven Rolls Royce and Bentley motorcars.

“The auction, which is held in a marquee in the beautiful grounds of Sherborne Castle, is one of the highlights of the auction calendar for me.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “We already have a stunning selection of cars dating from the 1920’s onwards with restoration projects through to concours show cars. Porsche, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jensen, Mercedes-Benz, MG, VW, Morris, Edsel, Triumph, Volvo, Ford and many other manufacturers are well represented and it looks to be another auction set for strong bidding in this strong market.”

Rolls Royce and Bentley have always been sought after, and Charterhouse have amassed a good number of these great cars. Estimated at £130,000-140,000 is a 1922 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. This imposing Rolls Royce was featured in the 1974 film The Great Gatsby starring Robert Redford. This is followed by a 1939 Rolls Royce Wraith form a client in Romford, Essex, for £40,000-50,000 and a 1935 Rolls Royce 20/25 tourer at £35,000-40,000.

In the Bentley section, there is a 1988 Bentley 8 previously owned by Mungo Jerry, famous for his 1970 chart hit In the Summertime, which is estimated at £5,500-6,500. However, it is a 1998 Bentley Turbo RT Mulliner which has already attracted good interest. Being a limited edition of just 100 made, this special Bentley was ordered by its owner when living in Monaco. He specified some very special extras including a speedometer inset into the back of the centre console to enable the back seat passenger to see how fast the car was going or maybe to frighten the Mother-in-Law as the speedo reads up to 260 km/h! Now the owner is back in the UK, and as the car has only covered less than 18,000 miles, the owner has decided now is the time to sell it.

Charterhouse is now accepting further entries for this specialist auction of classic cars and motorcycles on Sunday 19th July being held in conjunction with Classics at Sherborne Castle.

For further information regarding this auction please contact Matthew Whitney, Head of Classic Cars at Charterhouse, the Long Street Salerooms, Sherborne, Dorset DT9 3BS 01935 812277, via email mw@charterhouse-auction.com or log onto their web site www.charterhouse-auction.com

Mungo Jerrys’ 1988 Bentley 8 £5,500-6,500

1982 Porsch956 Chassis 003 (Estimate $7,000,000-$9,000,000) One of only ten works 956s, this Porsche is among the most historic endurance racing cars and the single most successful Porsche 956. Successfully using a unique aerodynamic principle known as ground effects to create large amounts of downforce, the 956 model changed the landscape of prototype sports cars. The 956 was developed for the new Group C regulations by engineer Norbert Singer and developed by Porsche in-house at their motorsport facility in Weissach. The 956 and its successor, the 962, are regarded as the most successful line of racing prototypes ever produced, with 120 victories over a 13-year span. Porsche’s incredible success in international endurance racing, particularly at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, which was won by the marque for a record 17th time this year, has never been equaled. The illustrious racing career of 956-003 started at the 1982 24 Hours of Le Mans when driven by Jochen Mass and Vern Schuppan, it placed second overall as part of a Porsche sweep of the top three positions. After that fantastic initial result, this 956 went on to win the next four races in which it was entered and was piloted by the best drivers of the era including Jacky Ickx, Jochen Mass and Derek Bell. In 1983, 956-003 was again pressed into duty as one of three cars entered by the Porsche factory team for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For this all-important race, Vern Schuppan was paired with Al Holbert and Hurley Haywood, American drivers with lifelong connections to the Porsche marque and winners of multiple championships. After 24 hours of grueling competition, 956-003, with Al Holbert aboard, crossed the line in first place, 63 seconds ahead of the 956 of Bell and Ickx in one of the most thrilling finishes in Le Mans history

When Porsche finally retired 956-003 from active duty, the car was sold to Vern Schuppan and it remained in his hands for over a decade. Since leaving Schuppan’s collection in the 1990s, this legendary 956 has been meticulously restored to its 1983 Le Mans specification and has had only four private owners. Each of its subsequent owners is a recognized collector who has carefully maintained and preserved this singularly important piece of racing history. In recent years, 956-003 has been a crowd favorite at historic events and has been honored with numerous accolades, including the Porsche Trophy at the 2014 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. With Porsche’s recent 1-2 victory at the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans, all eyes will be on 956-003 – one of the most significant racing Porsches. It is sure to be a coveted lot when offered at the Pebble Beach Auctions this August.

Driven by the growing popularity of historic racing cars and unprecedented demand at the Silverstone Classic motorsport event, Silverstone Auctions is proud to present its first-ever stand-alone Competition Car Sale on the 23rd July.

The auction will complement the two classic car sales held at the world-famous Silverstone circuit on the 25th and 26th July.

Last year’s auction of race and road cars saw total sales of over £5million and secured Silverstone Auctions two world record prices and an 85 per cent success rate on sales. This year’s auction is set to be bigger and better with the addition of yet more quality consignments – including some iconic pieces of racing car history.
