FULL HOUSE, ENTHUSIASTIC BIDDING AND GREAT RESULTS FOR CCA AUCTION

FULL HOUSE, ENTHUSIASTIC BIDDING AND GREAT RESULTS FOR CCA AUCTION

The Classic Car Auction on the 3rd August was a resounding success with modern classics coming to the fore and achieving excellent results.
A full house of cars and a healthy crowd of bidders helped CCA to achieve over £1.9 million in sales and a healthy sale rate of 60% cars sold.
The collection of carefully selected high-performance Japanese cars attracted lots of interest leading up to sale day and didn’t disappoint when it mattered. The Honda Integra was first off the block achieving £12,432 followed by Lot 562, the Honda NSX at £53,280, then came the first of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 2 Makkinen Editions Lot 604 at £27,750 with the other at £24,975. It didn’t stop there, the Subaru Impreza P1 achieved £22,755 and the WRX STi £15,762. Lot 619 the Mazda RX-7 came in at £41,625, but the big gun was the 2000 Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec which after some fabulous and at the start furious bidding brought the hammer down at £62,715.
From the same collector of the Japanese cars, his astute knowledge paid off again with European cars, Lot 561 the Renault Clio Sport V6 sold for £34,410 and a 2005 BMW M5 Saloon selling for £26,085 and a little Peugeot 205 Rallye gathering £16,650.
Talking of Peugeots, there were a number of these hot hatches in the sale and they were right little crackers too. Lot 505, a 1988 1.9 GTi sold for £8,889, Lot 626 sold for £8,769, the 309 1.9 GTi sold for £12,432 and not to be left behind a 1.6 GTi sold for £9,102. With such a fantastic offering there would always be one for somebody.
Mercedes also proved a popular marque, with convertibles selling well as were some very popular classic designs from the 1970s and 80s. A 2004 SL600 sold for £36,075 and a 1984 230 CE which attracted some very strong bidding sold for £12,432. Lot 682, a 1970 450 SLC proved a popular choice with some fantastic bidding achieving £16,650.
Lot 620, a faithful reproduction of the Range Rover from the James Bond film Octopussy had lots of interest and for the new buyer would present plenty of marketing opportunities and a chance to recoup his investment at £57,720.
With a number of Minis on offer, Cilla Black’s car was always going to attract bidders hoping to own a part of British entertainment. With some lively bidding, it was no surprise the car fetched £20,535.
One of the largest rounds of applause went to the new owner of Lot 602, the 1972 Rover 3.5 Coupe P5B. Again, with lots of interest in this car, it sold for £39,405.
Gary Dunne, Classic Car Auctions auction manager commented: “What a wonderful day of sales! Fabulous to see the room so full of people and to have over 180 cars to choose from made for an exciting day.”
“I think this auction only proved that modern classics are a popular choice and like the Japanese collection will be a great investment in the future.”
“There was some great interaction between the bidders, consigners and the auctioneer who certainly got the room into a frenzy at times and helped us to achieve the results we got.”

A GREAT ESCAPE FOR THE KING OF COOL’S WILLYS JEEP AT THE NEC

A GREAT ESCAPE FOR THE KING OF COOL’S WILLYS JEEP AT THE NEC

The 1945 Willys Jeep owned by Hollywood actor and ‘King of Cool’, Steve McQueen, will be offered for auction at the NEC Classic Motor Show Sale on 10th and 11th November.

A 1945 Willys Jeep MB once owned by Hollywood royalty and the ‘King of Cool’ himself, Steve McQueen, will be offered for sale at Silverstone Auctions’ final sale of the year at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show sale at the NEC, Birmingham, UK on 10thand 11th November.
Star of films such as Bullitt, The Great Escape and Le Mans, Steve McQueen built up a reputation as the ‘King of Cool’ thanks to his anti-hero persona in his films and in 1974 was named as the highest paid actor in the world. During his 28 year career, McQueen developed a vast car collection including the 1945 Willys Jeep MB on offer.
One of the 300,000 Willys Jeeps produced during World War II, the car on offer was first delivered to the US Army on 7th July 1945. Following McQueen’s death in 1980, the Jeep was offered at auction for the first time as lot 532 in the Steve McQueen Estate Auction at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas on 25th November 1984.
“Steve McQueen’s reputation both as an actor and as a racing driver is historic,” says Adam Rutter, classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions. “His love of speed and all things cars is famous. Performing many of his own stunts in Bullitt and The Great Escape, McQueen took his talent to the track competing in the 12 Hours of Sebring and the Baja 1000. McQueen even had the opportunity to combine his two passions in the 1971 film Le Mans.”
Powered by a 2.2-litre four-cylinder engine with 60hp and a top speed of 65mph, the Jeep wouldn’t have been the fastest car in McQueen’s collection but was certainly one of the most iconic. Both the Willys Jeep and Ford GPW became symbolic of WWII and would star in countless war movies, in his early movie career McQueen even appeared as a Jeep driver in the 1959 film Never So Few. The Jeep on offer even includes a special plaque denoting it as being owned by Steve McQueen and enters the auction with an estimate of £80,000 to £100,000.
Since being imported to the UK, the Jeep has been the subject of a thorough recommissioning and renovation by marque specialists and leading UK Jeep experts, Jeeparts UK, returning the car to the exacting specification as to when Steve McQueen owned it.
The car comes with the Certificate of Authenticity from the McQueen Estate Sale, the original auction catalogue from the Las Vegas auction and an original advertisement flyer. Also included are the original blue Californian license plates which are dated for road use until 31st October 1980, just one week prior to McQueen’s death on 7thNovember 1980.
“This car is a truly unrepeatable and unmissable opportunity for both car enthusiasts and movie fans alike and undoubtedly the star of the auction. The list of cars at the sale reads like a who’s who of the motoring world, Ferrari, Aston Martin, BMW, Mercedes, McLaren, Porsche and Jaguar, all of which are strongly represented at the sale. All eyes will be on the NEC on auction day.” concludes Rutter.

GREAT AMERICAN CLASSICS LEAD RM AUCTIONS’ 12th ANNUAL HERSHEY SALE

GREAT AMERICAN CLASSICS LEAD RM AUCTIONS’ 12th ANNUAL HERSHEY SALE
  • RM Auctions releases complete Hershey catalogue in final countdown to 12th annual sale
  • Latest highlights led by a beautifully presented 1932 Marmon Sixteen Close-Coupled Sedan
  • Auction now begins at 5:30 pm local time on 11 and 12 October at Hershey Lodge
  • Hershey digital catalogue and complete list of entries now available at rmsothebys.com

BLENHEIM, Ontario (24 September 2018) – RM Auctions has released the complete catalogue for the company’s 12th annual Hershey sale, set for 11-12 October at Hershey Lodge in Pennsylvania during the Antique Automobile Club of America’s renowned Eastern Division Fall Meet. An established venue for the successful sale of Veteran, Brass, and Classic Era motor cars, the Hershey sale features 147 diverse automobiles as well as a wide range of automobilia, with nearly 80 percent of all lots offered without reserve.
Final entries for the Hershey sale are led by a number of Classic Era American greats, including a 1932 Marmon Sixteen Close-Coupled Sedan offered from a prominent private collection. Exhibiting both superb period styling and world-class engineering, the Sixteen could out-accelerate a Duesenberg Model J in period while costing its buyer just one-third as much. This particular car has several unusual and desirable features and was one of the first Sixteens equipped with vacuum-assisted power brakes. The Marmon eventually landed with Daniel E. “Hap” Motlow in 1982, who was, at the time, chairman of the Jack Daniels Distillery. Motlow commissioned the car’s restoration by the noted Reuter’s Coach Works, which still presents well today. Following Motlow’s passing, the car was sold by Sotheby’s to benefit Vanderbilt University and has since spent time in several important collections, passing to the current owner in 2006. Highly attractive and complete with its original chassis, engine, and body, the award-winning Marmon is worthy of further showings or starring on a Caravan (Est. $250,000 - $300,000).

Latest highlights also include a 1934 Lincoln Model KB Convertible Sedan, offered from a prominent private collection and one of just 25 examples built in the beautiful “semi-custom” style. A lovely example of the Full Classic Lincoln and a longtime California car wearing a concours-quality restoration, the KB is offered with superb provenance and wonderful presentation (Est. $225,000 - $275,000). Rounding out the group is a 1936 Packard Twelve Coupe Roadster, believed to be the very first 14th Series Twelve Coupe Roadster built. Featuring its original rear-mounted spare and chromed headlights, the Packard is an especially fine, properly sorted, and striking example of its type, offered from long-term, known enthusiast ownership and ready to enjoy (Est. $275,000 - $325,000).

“We’re thrilled to bring such important, interesting Classics to Hershey once again this year,” says Gord Duff, Global Head of Auctions, RM Sotheby’s Group. “The Marmon Sixteen has certainly been a rising star in the Classic Era world in recent years, and with just 70 survivors, they aren’t available very often. It’s nice to bring such a fresh example to market, especially wearing a fantastic, well-maintained restoration. Hershey offers the perfect setting and group of enthusiasts for the Marmon and each of these classics of exceptional quality.”

Additional auction highlights include:
  • 10 automobiles offered from the Calumet Collection entirely without reserve, including everything from a 1938 Cadillac V-16 Convertible Sedan by Fleetwood to a 1934 Covered Wagon Camping Trailer;
  • 1932 Packard Twin Six Individual Custom Convertible Sedan wearing original Dietrich bodywork and a well-preserved, marque-specialist restoration which has not been shown since its completion (Est. $600,000 - $750,000).
