RM Sotheby’s is honoured to announce that it will present the esteemed Guyton Collection, comprising the cars and automobilia of the late Mr Fred Guyton, entirely without reserve. Set for 4-5 May at the collection site in St. Louis, Missouri, the auction will present Mr Guyton’s 60 Veteran, Brass, and Classic Era automobiles alongside hundreds of pieces of automobilia and collectables.

A beloved fixture of the collector car hobby, Mr Guyton was well-known and respected within collecting and car club circles, having amassed his renowned collection over more than four decades. After graduating from the University of Illinois College of Fine & Applied Arts in 1961 with a Bachelor of Architecture, Fred Guyton spent a year in the Peace Corps before his induction into the U.S. Army, where he served as a helicopter pilot. After discharge, Fred moved to St. Louis and began his illustrious career as an architect, which culminated in his co-founding of the world-renowned architectural firm Peckham Guyton Albers & Viets, Inc. (PGAV), where he continued to work until his passing in 2018. During Fred’s 35 years as Chairman of PGAV, he led the development of landmark projects around the globe, including Busch Gardens Williamsburg & Tampa, Anheuser-Busch World Headquarters, and Universal Studios Theme Parks. Mr Guyton was a proud St. Louisan, active in civic works, and was appointed by a succession of St. Louis Mayors to numerous posts of local importance.

All of Mr Guyton’s experiences led him to be a true student of history, his passion for which is visible throughout his collection. The motor cars are focused on the era that begins with the dawn of the automobile and culminates in the immediate pre-war period, bringing to light the best of the era’s technological advancements and engineering. Both American and European automobiles were chosen for their importance to automotive history. A true hobbyist, Mr Guyton was on the Board of Directors of the Classic Car Club of America (CCCA), Classic Car Club Museum, and the CCCA Spirit of St. Louis Region.

“Fred Guyton was a treasured name in the collector car hobby, and we’re honoured to present his fascinating collection at auction,” says Donnie Gould, Car Specialist, RM Sotheby’s. “With an encyclopedic knowledge of history himself, Fred’s collection tells the story of a significant period in automotive advancement, one that we’re thrilled to share with the hobby this spring. Fred rarely if ever sold a part of his beloved collection, and, apart from a handful of cars, did not show his collection often, so this truly is a very rare opportunity.”

Of the 60 automobiles on offer, a trio of Classic Era highlights stand apart from the rest. These include an incredibly rare 1930 Packard 734 Speedster Eight Phaeton, chassis no. 184100, which is an exceptionally original example of the ultimate performance Packard of its era. Offered from just two owners since 1955, including well-known East Coast Packard collector, Tom Mix, the Speedster Eight Phaeton is one of just five ever built, and is worthy of inclusion in the very best collections of American Classics. Joining the Packard is a 1930 Duesenberg Model J Murphy Convertible Sedan, engine no. J-329, a highly cherished piece within the collection. Originally driven by Indianapolis racer Leon Duray, the Model J was stunningly restored by Chris Charlton. Complete with its original chassis, body, and engine, the Duesenberg comes to the market having seldom been shown and providing a host of opportunities for its next owner, who would surely be welcomed at virtually any major concours. Rounding out the group is a 1930 Ruxton Model C Baker-Raulang Roadster, chassis no. 11005. A well-known example of a pioneering front-wheel-drive American car, the Ruxton on offer was one of Mr Guyton’s favourite cars, with known history from new and the Best-Preserved Pre-War Car honours at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. One of the rarest American Full Classics—a mere seven examples remain—a Ruxton Roadster is seldom available for public sale.

Beyond the most cherished pieces of the collection, there are several significant automobiles for which Guyton was well-known in the hobby. The first of these cars is a 1906 Mason Touring, chassis no. 77, the earliest car designed by the Duesenberg brothers. A well-engineered Brass Era car, the Mason is formerly of the Harrah’s Collection and is a significant early automobile offered with well-known, long-term history. Also on offer is a 1927 Duesenberg Model X Dual-Cowl Phaeton, engine no. X3, the Chicago and Los Angeles motor show car in the period and the first Model X to become available for public sale in decades. A part of the collection for over 20 years, the Model X is the rarest production Duesenberg as one of just 13 built and only four remaining. The 1938 Rolls-Royce Phantom III ‘Parallel Door’ Saloon, chassis no. 3DL86 was perhaps Fred Guyton’s best-known, and most beloved car, gifted to him by a very close friend upon his passing. With a fascinating feature of sliding doors alongside stunning lines, the Phantom III is something to behold. Finally, a 1909 Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Silver Ghost Roi des Belges, chassis no. 1203, also highlights the collection. Formerly of the Richard Solove Collection, the Silver Ghost is a Pebble Beach and Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance award-winner and a long-time national tour veteran.

Mr Guyton’s passion for historical pursuits is reflected in very discernable areas within his automobilia and collectibles as well, with an entire room in his facility dedicated to WWI and WWII aviation and naval ephemera, as well as a superb automotive library. Well over 500 pieces of automobilia, collectibles, petroliana, sports memorabilia, and original artwork are set for the May auction, alongside more than 3,000 model and toy cars, including what is regarded as one of the world’s finest assortments of Minic Clockwork Toy Cars. Within the collection is a tremendous group of mascots, bronzes, badges, and original paintings by renowned automotive artists, the perfect complement to any collection of motor cars. Following enthusiastic bidding and the successful sale of desirable American Classics at the company’s recent Arizona auction, RM Sotheby’s is delighted to announce important Classic Era entries for its 21^st annual Amelia Island auction on 8-9 March at the Ritz-Carlton. The group is led by a stunning 1930 Duesenberg Model J ‘Sweep Panel’ Dual-Cowl Phaeton by LeBaron.

The Duesenberg Model J nicknamed the “Duesy,” represents anything truly great or grand. It was bankrolled by E.L. Cord and designed from the outset to be the world’s finest car. When the Model J debuted at the New York Auto Salon on 1 December 1928, its launch dominated newspaper headlines. Today, the Model J still marks the crowning achievement of the Classic Era.  

Interestingly, of the mere 18 examples ever produced of the ‘Sweep Panel’ Dual-Cowl Phaeton body style, engine no. J-487 is the one and only example on the long 153½-in. wheelbase. This Duesenberg, fully restored to concours-quality from the ground up by the renowned Fran Roxas, is finished in a stunning rich black and café au lait combination, highlighted by a subtle red pinstripe that delineates the iconic sweep panel, providing a handsome match to the tan cloth top and sumptuous leather interior, with its distinctive engine-turned dashboard. It is an exceptional example of the marque, and one with a known and continuous history from new, which has always been well maintained and cared for throughout its life, as evidenced by its ACD Club Category One Certification (Est. $1,600,000 – $2,000,000).

Further significant pre-war automobiles sure to draw attention in Amelia Island include the only factory non-supercharged 1935 Auburn Eight Custom Speedster, a sought-after Classic in today’s market, offered without reserve from the esteemed Richard L. Burdick Collection, from which strong results were achieved in Arizona ($500,000 – $650,000, offered without reserve); an authentic 1934 Packard Twelve Convertible Sedan Custom, offered fresh to the market following an exceptional restoration (Est. $1,250,000 – $1,500,000); a 1931 Packard Deluxe Eight Convertible Roadster by Derham, formerly of the Julian Eccles and James Weston Collections, coming to Amelia Island complete with its original chassis, engine and bodywork (Est. $650,000 – $750,000); and, formerly of the Imperial Palace and Michael Calore Collections, a 1932 Stutz DV-32 Convertible Victoria by Rollston, one of just five built to this design on DV-32 chassis and an AACA and CCCA 100-point Senior First Prize winner (Est. $750,000 - $1,000,000).

Ten Brass and Classic Era motor cars will cross the RM Sotheby’s block in Amelia Island, entirely without reserve, following decades of careful stewardship in The Leon-Hackey Collection, a long-standing, true enthusiast name in the hobby. Highlights include:

• 1909 Delaunay-Belleville Type IA Victoria by Brewster, a prized part of the collection since 1975, having had only three additional owners from new. This is one of the great French Brass Era automobiles, wearing elaborate Victorian coachwork by one of America’s finest coachbuilders (Est. $250,000 - $325,000); and,
• 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Close-Coupled Saloon by Barker, a centerpiece of the collection since 1978, formerly owned by Hollywood legend Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., wearing sporting one-off coachwork with numerous unique features, and complete with original chassis, engine and body as delivered in 1934 (Est. $350,000 - $450,000).

1937 Packard 115C Convertible Coupe

A Packard 115C Convertible Coupe is to be sold by the international car auctioneers COYS just two miles from where it was first built in 1937. This very rare right-hand drive Packard was discovered in a garage by the vendor’s father in 1979 and will go under the hammer at Syon Park this Saturday, 13th October. The Packard underwent seven years of restoration after which it was seen regularly at events such as the Biggin Hill International Air Fair and the Bromley Pageant of Motoring. Estimate £22,000- £27,000.

Amongst the broad selection of historic and classic vehicles coming to auction, is an exceptional 1959 Leyland AEC Routemaster Double Deck Bus by Park Royal. It has been well kept since its 1984 withdrawal from service and is in very original condition, having escaped London Transport’s modernisation programme in the 1990’s. The paintwork is excellent, with a very straight body, excellent original interior, and a clean chassis and the batteries are relatively new. Estimate £50,000- £60,000.

A 2001 Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina which is also up for auction was designed to recall the glories of successful road racers of the past, such as the 166 MM, and thoroughbred front-engined 12-cylinder Ferrari roadsters of the calibre of the 250 GT California and 365 GTS/4 Daytona. The car is finished in Blu Tour de France with a Crema leather interior and has a fabulous low mileage example; it has covered a mere 558 miles from new and is presented in simply fabulous condition. Estimate £290,000- £330,000.

Also, going under the hammer is a 1971 Rolls Royce Corniche Convertible which was first delivered to the late Sir Bruce Forsyth in July 1971 and was owned by him for seven years. It has a wonderful Ming Blue coachwork and sumptuous blue interior. It is a very well maintained car and has an extensive history file. Estimate £60,000- £70,000.

A 1992 Lamborghini Diablo is also on offer. This car was first registered to former Formula 1 constructor Walter Wolf racing, subsequently finding its way to the United States, and now being offered from a UK-based Lamborghini collection. It is finished in Yellow with a black leather interior. In 2018 the car was the star in the Lisa Riley show Sooty and Sweep, which was subsequently featured in the Lamborghini Club magazine Rivista Veloce. Estimate £100,000- £120,000.

The 1973 ISO Fidia is a wonderful proposition for a collector. The car has been modified in recent years with alloy cylinder heads, upgraded Ford ‘Automatic Over Drive’ (AOD) gearbox and has been finished in the classic (and original) combination of mid-blue metallic with a Champagne leather interior, the Fidia exudes a level of plushness that only the very best luxury GT cars of the 70s are able to achieve. It is offered with a current UK V5 registration document and MoT test certificate. The estimate is £50,000- £60,000.

BLENHEIM, Ontario (24 September 2018) – RM Auctions has released the complete catalogue for the company’s 12^th annual Hershey sale, set for 11-12 October at Hershey Lodge in Pennsylvania during the Antique Automobile Club of America’s renowned Eastern Division Fall Meet. An established venue for the successful sale of Veteran, Brass, and Classic Era motor cars, the Hershey sale features 147 diverse automobiles as well as a wide range of automobilia, with nearly 80 percent of all lots offered without reserve.

Final entries for the Hershey sale are led by a number of Classic Era American greats, including a 1932 Marmon Sixteen Close-Coupled Sedan offered from a prominent private collection. Exhibiting both superb period styling and world-class engineering, the Sixteen could out-accelerate a Duesenberg Model J in period while costing its buyer just one-third as much. This particular car has several unusual and desirable features and was one of the first Sixteens equipped with vacuum-assisted power brakes. The Marmon eventually landed with Daniel E. “Hap” Motlow in 1982, who was, at the time, chairman of the Jack Daniels Distillery. Motlow commissioned the car’s restoration by the noted Reuter’s Coach Works, which still presents well today. Following Motlow’s passing, the car was sold by Sotheby’s to benefit Vanderbilt University and has since spent time in several important collections, passing to the current owner in 2006. Highly attractive and complete with its original chassis, engine, and body, the award-winning Marmon is worthy of further showings or starring on a Caravan (Est. $250,000 - $300,000). 

Latest highlights also include a 1934 Lincoln Model KB Convertible Sedan, offered from a prominent private collection and one of just 25 examples built in the beautiful “semi-custom” style. A lovely example of the Full Classic Lincoln and a longtime California car wearing a concours-quality restoration, the KB is offered with superb provenance and wonderful presentation (Est. $225,000 - $275,000). Rounding out the group is a 1936 Packard Twelve Coupe Roadster, believed to be the very first 14^th Series Twelve Coupe Roadster built. Featuring its original rear-mounted spare and chromed headlights, the Packard is an especially fine, properly sorted, and striking example of its type, offered from long-term, known enthusiast ownership and ready to enjoy (Est. $275,000 - $325,000).
