EXCELLENT PROSPECTS FOR UK CLASSIC CAR SALES IN EUROPE

The current position of sterling against the Euro is bearing significant fruit for the UK sellers of classic cars which are being purchased by enthusiasts from across the European Union, says International auction house COYS.

Chris Routledge from COYS said: “ Our recent results at Blenheim Palace, with the pound at €1.11, proved to be the tipping point for the European buyer with a noticeably higher than average sale rate of cars being shipped to European countries.

He added: “ This was noticeable as well with the number of absentee bidders from the Continent, both via the telephone and the internet, so the possibilities for selling Sterling cars on the ground in Europe has become very attractive indeed.

“ As a result of this opportunity, we have made special arrangements for discounted transport so that UK sellers can sell their classics at our next International auction at Schloss Dyck in Germany on August 3rd.”

Chris said: “ This event is the jewel in the crown of German motoring events and UK sellers should take advantage of the strength of the Euro and the discounted transporter arrangements which will allow them copper-bottom their chances of selling their classic or specialist car.”

Routledge said that the current position of Sterling against the Euro was bearing significant fruit for UK sellers of classic cars, which are increasingly being purchased by European buyers.

He added: “ Our recent Blenheim auction saw a significant upsurge in European interest, but what was particularly noticeable was the number of multiple purchases being made by single European purchases.

“ One gentleman from France came to the auction form Marseilles and bought four cars, and was looking to buy more if he could. His purchases included a Jaguar E-Type, a Mercedes 230SL, a Fiat 500 and a Ferrari 308. A German buyer, brand new to the classic car market, arrived and registered on the morning of the sale and purchased a Lamborghini Jalpa and a Maserati Merak. A De Tomaso Pantera was sold to Germany in an auction room bidding war between two Germans that left any English buyers in the dust.”

 Chris said: “ The strength of the Euro against Sterling has undoubtedly created a very advantageous buying climate for European classic car collectors, with not only sensibly priced cars but with the current exchange rate being perceived as being at least 25% discount against European asking prices. “

 He added: “This is a unique set of circumstances – an alignment of the planets if you like. The quality of the stock in the UK is of the highest international standard, European buyers know It and are very keen to get their hands on it, as with current exchange rates, the prices could not be more attractive.

“ For UK sellers of classic cars and other collectables who wish to sell in Sterling to European collectors, the outlook is very strong while these exchange rates continue, and they should consider grabbing hold of this opportunity while they can. We live in very interesting times.”

Celebrity items to go under the hammer as three important automotive events come together for a showstopper weekend.

International auctioneers COYS are kicking off the automotive calendar this summer against the backdrop of Blenheim Palace by hosting an unmissable weekend of dual auction extravaganza as well as a Concours judged by classic car TV personality, Alex Riley.

Enthusiasts and collectors from around the globe are set to attend Blenheim Palace weekend as demand in the classic car market was shown by COYS previous 100% sale rate auction at Chiswick House in May.

Important collectors’ items once owned by Legends, Rock Stars, and Sports Personalities will be among the awe-inspiring lots for sale at auction. A car famous in its own right and expected to sell for between an estimated £600,000 and £700,000 is a 1 of 7 Special Edition 2016 McLaren MSO HS competition inspired model in Right Hand Drive – the only finished in Heritage Green Livery. This ultra-rare car embodies McLaren’s capabilities, being the son of the 90s modern supercar legend, the McLaren F1.

The sale will also feature a Range Rover once owned by David Beckham. The 2007 4.2-litre Supercharged Sport with Kahn styling and a uniquely customised interior would have cost around £200,000 when new (including modifications), and estimates suggest it will go for £20,000 to £30,000.

Other important cars on offer include Sir Elton John’s previous Maserati Quattroporte, a car that so clearly has been an important catalyst for sporting saloons today. The rocket car for a rocket man is estimated to fetch £25,000 to £30,000.

On the morning of Saturday 29th June, COYS will be dropping the hammer on the first sale of the day, a personal item from the private collection of the late Hugh Taylor. This will be followed by his many other no reserve items including auto memorabilia, motoring art, awards and trophies, aeronautical components, and numerous original mechanical components typical to sporting marques of the last century.

It will be a one-off moment to access and acquire items from the collection of a gentleman who is acknowledged to have been one of the greatest collectors of the modern era. Donations of the auction proceeds will be made to the Alzheimer's Society, and the entire collection will be offered at No Reserve.

Adjacent to the auction is the long-established Concours d'Elegance which displays a broad selection of some of the finest and most important classic motor cars in the country such as the rare Ferrari 550 Zagato, one of just a handful in the world. The Concours d'Elegance has seen a wide array of celebrity guest judges in the past and this year we will see Alex Riley taking the stage. Mr Riley is a star on the BBC's The One Show, The Classic Car Show on Channel 5, and currently appears on your screens on The Car Years on ITV.

SW1 NUMBER PLATES COULD FETCH NEARLY A QUARTER OF A MILLION POUND

With history being made in London SW1 for a Brexit deal, no-deal or referendum, car owners have a unique opportunity to purchase a piece of SW1 history.

Two unique number plates SW1and 1SW which are on retention are being sold at the COYS True Greats Christmas Auction on December 4th at the Royal Horticultural Halls and could sell for up to £180,000.

Also on sale, is a number plate ‘1 IOU’ which may remind some bidders of their pre-Christmas obligations. This unique number plate has a guide price of £20,000 -£25,000.

Nick Wells, Senior Auction Director at Coys said: “With the increasing value and benefits of rare number plates being cherished among collectors, now is arguably the ideal time to add to your investments with some of these transferable registration marks.”

“Not only that but with what is currently happening in parliament, and the fact that the auction in SW1, these number plates could have their own place in history.”

He added: “This annual Christmas sale will also see classics like a 1938 BMW 328 Roadster, a 1960 Mercedes 220SE Ponton Cabriolet and a 1989 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante going under the hammer.”

The BMW 328 really is one of the great driving pre-war cars, often considered to equal many of the post-war sports cars for their handling and speed. The bodywork is finished in white featuring contrasting elegant cream dials. The car is complete with a UK registration document and also a FIVA passport. The estimate is £250,000.

The Mercedes 220SE was first registered in 1960 and is one of the only 17 producing Right-hand drive format. It has been with its current owner for 30 years after he purchased the car from the previous long-term owner, a retired Army officer in West London. The bodywork has been restored and refinished in its original shade of Mittelblau (blue), the wood and chrome refinished. Estimate £100,000- £130,000.

AMERICAN PACKARD GOES BACK TO ITS BIRTHPLACE

1937 Packard 115C Convertible Coupe

A Packard 115C Convertible Coupe is to be sold by the international car auctioneers COYS just two miles from where it was first built in 1937. This very rare right-hand drive Packard was discovered in a garage by the vendor’s father in 1979 and will go under the hammer at Syon Park this Saturday, 13th October. The Packard underwent seven years of restoration after which it was seen regularly at events such as the Biggin Hill International Air Fair and the Bromley Pageant of Motoring. Estimate £22,000- £27,000.

Amongst the broad selection of historic and classic vehicles coming to auction, is an exceptional 1959 Leyland AEC Routemaster Double Deck Bus by Park Royal. It has been well kept since its 1984 withdrawal from service and is in very original condition, having escaped London Transport’s modernisation programme in the 1990’s. The paintwork is excellent, with a very straight body, excellent original interior, and a clean chassis and the batteries are relatively new. Estimate £50,000- £60,000.

A 2001 Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina which is also up for auction was designed to recall the glories of successful road racers of the past, such as the 166 MM, and thoroughbred front-engined 12-cylinder Ferrari roadsters of the calibre of the 250 GT California and 365 GTS/4 Daytona. The car is finished in Blu Tour de France with a Crema leather interior and has a fabulous low mileage example; it has covered a mere 558 miles from new and is presented in simply fabulous condition. Estimate £290,000- £330,000.

Also, going under the hammer is a 1971 Rolls Royce Corniche Convertible which was first delivered to the late Sir Bruce Forsyth in July 1971 and was owned by him for seven years. It has a wonderful Ming Blue coachwork and sumptuous blue interior. It is a very well maintained car and has an extensive history file. Estimate £60,000- £70,000.

A 1992 Lamborghini Diablo is also on offer. This car was first registered to former Formula 1 constructor Walter Wolf racing, subsequently finding its way to the United States, and now being offered from a UK-based Lamborghini collection. It is finished in Yellow with a black leather interior. In 2018 the car was the star in the Lisa Riley show Sooty and Sweep, which was subsequently featured in the Lamborghini Club magazine Rivista Veloce. Estimate £100,000- £120,000.

The 1973 ISO Fidia is a wonderful proposition for a collector. The car has been modified in recent years with alloy cylinder heads, upgraded Ford ‘Automatic Over Drive’ (AOD) gearbox and has been finished in the classic (and original) combination of mid-blue metallic with a Champagne leather interior, the Fidia exudes a level of plushness that only the very best luxury GT cars of the 70s are able to achieve. It is offered with a current UK V5 registration document and MoT test certificate. The estimate is £50,000- £60,000.

Coys bring their traditional selection of excellent motor cars to Fontwell House for their Goodwood Motor Circuit Revival Race Meeting Sale.

Coys, the International Auction House will once again be packing the sumptuous surroundings of Fontwell House with some of the most desirable automotive offerings from across the globe. Amongst the exciting motor cars on offer, some of the gems that truly stand out are the 1977 Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina, a 1973 Trojan T101 and a 1935 MG PA Airline Coupe.

1977 Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina

The Ferrari Vetroresina has been meticulously looked after over the years. With only one previous owner from new, it is a very rare UK right-hand drive specification Ferrari. It is finished in Nero over Nero, this car is not only a very fun car to drive, but also extremely rare and as such an excellent investment opportunity. Estimated £130,000-150,000.

The 1973 Trojan T101 is one of five such cars produced by Trojan for the Formula 5000 regulations of the time. It was built for the 1973 season on behalf of Ian Ward Racing and driven by Keith Holland. This car was entered for Keith Norris’s F5000 revival series in 1983, later at the “Southampton Ocean Village Sprint” in 1987, before being placed into storage for almost 30 years. Since being returned to superb race-worthy order, this very car has won its class in the highly competitive HSCC Derek Bell Trophy. The estimate is £75,000 – 95,000.

1967 Specification 330 P4 roadrace car

For anyone not quite so racing minded, but with arguably even more “presence” than the Trojan, Coys are especially delighted to offer an astonishing survivor of the “Art Deco” period, and an original 1935 MG PA with exquisite “Carbodies” Airline Coupe coachwork. It was designed by H.W. Allingham and subsequently marketed by him. In total it is believed that a mere 51 were ever constructed, with the majority of those cars being built on the four-cylinder MG PA and PA series. Estimated £70,000 – £90,000.

A 1970 Citroen Mehari is also going under the hammer. This wonderful car was imported from Spain in 2017 where the previous owners had undertaken a sympathetic restoration of the car. This work included a new hood and side screens as well as re-upholstering the interior. Currently, the car shows approximately 37,000kms on the odometer. The estimate is £10,000 – 12,000.

A car representing the absolute pinnacle of post-World War Two British motoring ingenuity is the 1947 Allard K1. It is one of only 7 road going K1’s in the UK today, among the 151 originally produced. This car was completely rebuilt in the late 1990’s and used regularly by its then owner, John Aldridge. In its current ownership since 2013, it has won the Allard Owners Club Concours twice and picked up “The Best Allard to Take Home” award, as voted by the members. Estimated £65,000- £75,000.
