RACE CARS HEADING TO AUCTION AT SILVERSTONE CLASSIC SALE

One of the most significant touring cars is coming to Silverstone Auctions sale on the 26th to 28th July at the Silverstone Classic Sale.

Sir John Whitmore’s Ford Lotus Cortina that took him to the 1965 European Touring Car Championship crown is being offered for sale with an estimated price of £190,000 to £220,000.

Prepared by Alan Mann Racing for Sir John Whitmore, this car dominated the 1965 season, it won eight out of the nine rounds, leaving all behind in its wake. The great Jack Sears shared the car with Sir John Whitmore that years for an assault on the Nurburgring 6 hour race which they won overall and set a new lap record. It was then retired from competition at the end of the 1965 season, where it was used by Ford for a promotional tour.

In 1967 Sir John bought the car and it remained in his ownership until 1995. During that time, the car resided in the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu from 1972 to 1978 and also spent some time with Jack Sears on his farm in Norfolk. It was then purchased by an American enthusiast who had no intention of racing the Cortina but continued to preserve the history of this most famous car.

In 2013 the Ford Lotus Cortina returned to the UK to be sold at auction has just covered 1,000 miles whilst in the care of the previous owner. The current vendor, who is a family friend of the Manns, is now offering the car for sale with just 11,464 miles, albeit mainly race miles. The history behind this car is so complete, with results, articles from Autosport, correspondence and period photographs.

This is one of the most historical and important race cars to come on the market that was raced and belonged to one of the legends of British Motorsport.

Other race cars being offered for sale is a rare 1965 Studebaker Lark Daytona 500 estimated at £65,000 to £80,000 and excitingly is offered at No Reserve. Having secured invitations to some of the most high-profile historic race meetings such as Goodwood, this is a highly developed, expertly prepared and extremely competitive car. It comes with a host of spares including wheels, tyres, differentials, body panels and further assorted parts. This car is welcome in the Masters Series, HRDC Historic Touring Cars, Bernie’s V8s and HSCC Touring Cars. There is also highly likely to be an invitation from Goodwood when their period for racing is 1960s saloons.

For something that is more of a club man specification, a 1998 Dare Ginetta is being offered at £22,000 to £26,000 which is equally as happy on the road and supplied with both a soft and a hard top. The current vendor is the fourth owner of the car and has always kept it garaged and covered and been used on the road only when it is dry. The chassis and bodywork were rebuilt in 2010 and at the same time, the engine was also rebuilt. This car is currently on a SORN but it wouldn’t take much to get it back into action.

Also on offer is this beautifully prepared 1991 BMW E30 M3 2.5 Competition estimated at £75,000 to £80,000. A well-proven car in the world of rallying and touring car racing, this car has been painstakingly prepared to the highest standard over the last four to five years. The Silverstone Classic Auction takes place on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th July 2019 offering an exclusive selection of classic cars, sports cars and supercars, including automobilia and luxury watches. The lots can be previewed on the 25th July 2019 from 13.30 to 18.30 and on the 26th of July from 09.00 to 18.00.

PORSCHE’S 356 SPEEDSTER ICON JOINS RACE RETRO AUCTION

An original Porsche 356 A Speedster, one of the most collectable Porsche models in the world, will be offered for sale at Silverstone Auctions’ upcoming Race Retro Sale on 23rdFebruary at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry.

Recognised globally as the ultimate small sports car for its nimble, lightweight and timeless, simple shape, the example for sale is one of an estimated 555 356 A T2 Speedsters built in 1958, the final and most desirable production run of the model.

Presented today in beautifully restored condition and converted to right-hand drive, the matching numbers Speedster will go under the hammer guided at £280,000 - £320,000.

“This is one of the best examples of a genuine Porsche collector’s car that we have had the pleasure to offer at auction,” comments Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions. “Over the past few decades, the 356 Speedster has become an automotive icon and is very much sought-after by enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. These days, replicas are popular with enthusiasts, but there’s nothing like an original, which is what we have here.”

This particular example was supplied new through well-known Porsche dealer Hoffman of New York finished in Silver with a Red leather interior. Distinctive features of the model include the low, removable windscreen, lightweight body, minimal folding top and side curtains in the place of side windows. The minimalist interior includes a large, two-spoke steering wheel, lightweight racing-style bucket seats, light grey carpet, and leather covered door panels and upper dashboard.

Located at the rear of the car, a 1,582cc flat-four engine capable of producing 60bhp with 4-speed transmission offers the sporting performance that made the Speedster popular with owners who enjoyed taking to the race track. The T2 models also benefit from numerous upgrades, including an improved transaxle and steering box design, among other refinements.

Having spent most of its life in America, the Speedster was acquired by its current owner, a serious and noted collector, from an auction at Pebble Beach, California, in 2015. It was then imported into the UK and immediately entrusted to JD Classics of Mayfair for a professional conversion to right-hand drive.

Today the car still retains the original engine and gearbox, making it a full matching numbers example. The Porsche Kardex also confirms it was originally supplied in Silver with Red leather, the same combination and specification of the car today.

Having spent the last few years in professional storage with little use, the Speedster now comes to market from a significant collection with all import taxes paid and the UK registered.

“The Speedster variant captured the imagination of A-list celebrities and film stars across the world and today offers the potential buyer a rare Porsche icon that can be used and enjoyed, whilst still offering a true chance of a solid investment,” concludes Nick.

The Porsche is accompanied by a CD showing the full restoration, a copy of the Porsche Kardex, original owner’s manual, tools and jack.

BLUE BEAUTY! RARE AZZURRO FERRARI DINO GALLOPS TO AUCTION AT RACE RETRO

Silverstone Auctions will auction one of only 235 the UK, right-hand drive Ferrari Dino 246GTs at its sale at Race Retro powered by Motor Sport at Stoneleigh Park on 23rdFebruary 2019.

Rarer still, the 1972 Ferrari Dino 246GT Coupe is believed to be one of only two or three examples finished in Azzurro Dino. Presented in highly original condition and accompanied by its Classiche 'Certificate di Authenticity', it will be offered at the auction with a sale estimate of £240,000 to £280,000.

“This stunning E-Series Dino has to be one of the most original and unmolested 246GTs anywhere”, comments Guy Lees-Milne, general manager, Silverstone Auctions. “The Dino is a very popular model among Ferrari enthusiasts, and given that this example is one of so few finished in the stunning Azzurro Dino blue and has been Classiche awarded, it’s a perfect example for collectors.”

The rare Dino was delivered new in December 1971 with a Nero leather interior and optional radio, nose bar and electric windows. It has since been enjoyed by just four registered keepers and has enjoyed regular maintenance by marque specialists, reading a total of just 51,786 miles today.

In 1991, the cars long-term owner treated it to a major overhaul, an engine rebuild, and a paint refresh, all of which was photographed and documented in a leather-bound photo album containing 232 pictures.

On account of its originality, rare colour and low ownership, this exceptional example was selected as the 'Definitive Dino' by the Haynes National Motor Museum and exhibited there. It has since been featured in a number of classic car magazines and was a 'Cover Car' in Classic & Sports Car (November 2012) and featured in the Classic & Sports Car Calendar. It was also described by Autocar magazine as "one of the one hundred most beautiful cars in pictures."

Last year the Dino received an overhaul of the suspension and brakes, as well as other minor works, at a cost of almost £10,000. More recently, it was treated to new seats, new carpets, and a dashboard and interior re-trim in the correct, factory-supplied, ‘mouse hair’.

The Dino is also supplied with its Classiche 'Certificate di Authenticity', issued on 25th July 2016, which is presented in a beautiful bespoke red box with enamel badge.

In addition to the photograph album and Classiche Presentation box, the car is also accompanied by an 80-page, bound owner's file, original Bill of Sale (£5,124.17), V5C, invoices, historic MoTs, and the original leather wallet with Operating Manuals, original Warranty Card, and wiring diagram. The boot of the car also contains the tool roll and jack, which is also finished in Azzurro Dino.

Silverstone Auctions has unveiled a host of exciting developments to its 2019 calendar including sales with new themes, new locations and new partnerships.

In total the auction house will host sales on six weekends across the year, kicking off with its first ever sale at Autosport International at the NEC in January. Following its well-established sale at Race Retro in February, a new sale of British marques is being introduced in May at a brand new venue, the magnificent Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire. The sale will be held in conjunction with the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, giving it another new dimension which is sure to attract buyers and sellers alike.

In July, Silverstone Auctions returns to its spiritual home in Northamptonshire for its flagship sale at the world famous Silverstone Classic.

Following its successful debut as an auction venue this year, Silverstone Auctions will return to the Dallas Burston Polo Club in September for another exciting new event. The supercar weekend will see a dedicated sale of Ferraris take place in association with the Ferrari Owners’ Club GB on Saturday 21st September, with a dedicated Porsche sale in association with Porsche Club GB taking place the following day.

The auction house will then conclude 2019 with its return to the NEC Classic Motor Show in November.

Coys bring their traditional selection of excellent motor cars to Fontwell House for their Goodwood Motor Circuit Revival Race Meeting Sale.

Coys, the International Auction House will once again be packing the sumptuous surroundings of Fontwell House with some of the most desirable automotive offerings from across the globe. Amongst the exciting motor cars on offer, some of the gems that truly stand out are the 1977 Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina, a 1973 Trojan T101 and a 1935 MG PA Airline Coupe.

1977 Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina

The Ferrari Vetroresina has been meticulously looked after over the years. With only one previous owner from new, it is a very rare UK right-hand drive specification Ferrari. It is finished in Nero over Nero, this car is not only a very fun car to drive, but also extremely rare and as such an excellent investment opportunity. Estimated £130,000-150,000.

The 1973 Trojan T101 is one of five such cars produced by Trojan for the Formula 5000 regulations of the time. It was built for the 1973 season on behalf of Ian Ward Racing and driven by Keith Holland. This car was entered for Keith Norris’s F5000 revival series in 1983, later at the “Southampton Ocean Village Sprint” in 1987, before being placed into storage for almost 30 years. Since being returned to superb race-worthy order, this very car has won its class in the highly competitive HSCC Derek Bell Trophy. The estimate is £75,000 – 95,000.

For anyone not quite so racing minded, but with arguably even more “presence” than the Trojan, Coys are especially delighted to offer an astonishing survivor of the “Art Deco” period, and an original 1935 MG PA with exquisite “Carbodies” Airline Coupe coachwork. It was designed by H.W. Allingham and subsequently marketed by him. In total it is believed that a mere 51 were ever constructed, with the majority of those cars being built on the four-cylinder MG PA and PA series. Estimated £70,000 – £90,000.

A 1970 Citroen Mehari is also going under the hammer. This wonderful car was imported from Spain in 2017 where the previous owners had undertaken a sympathetic restoration of the car. This work included a new hood and side screens as well as re-upholstering the interior. Currently, the car shows approximately 37,000kms on the odometer. The estimate is £10,000 – 12,000.

A car representing the absolute pinnacle of post-World War Two British motoring ingenuity is the 1947 Allard K1. It is one of only 7 road going K1’s in the UK today, among the 151 originally produced. This car was completely rebuilt in the late 1990’s and used regularly by its then owner, John Aldridge. In its current ownership since 2013, it has won the Allard Owners Club Concours twice and picked up “The Best Allard to Take Home” award, as voted by the members. Estimated £65,000- £75,000.
