A 2005 Aston Martin DB9 Volante in need of some TLC roared past its £13,000-£20,000 guide price to sell for £26,620, the top price of the day achieved at Barons’ Summer Classic sale at Sandown Park racecourse on July 16. 

 

This stylish if a little worn example of a modern British classic was neck and neck in the bidding stakes with a handsome piece of classic American automotive history, the splendid red and white 1930 Nash Ambassador 8 4-door sedan, which went to a new home for £26,400.

 

Third past the post was a really pretty - and potent - ochre-coloured 1973 Alfa Romeo GT Junior 1600, which exceeded top estimate to sell for £22,000. De-bumpered, fitted with an Alfa Romeo 2.0 litre Twin Spark engine, an Alfaholics fast road suspension set-up and road-legal semi-slick tyres it’s just begging to be taken out on a track day.  

 

Sweeping in in fourth and fifth places were an ex-Bentley press car 2003 Continental GT, and a sleek 1962 Bentley S2, in a sophisticated sage green over smoke green livery. They achieved £21,450 and £19,800 respectively. 

 

The immaculate 1970 Rover 3.5-litre P5B exceeded top estimate, selling for £16,940 and, further down the field, a rare 1998 Mercedes C43 AMG estate blew its £2,500-£4,000 estimate out of the water to achieve £6,050. 

 

The Barons team is now looking forward to its annual Jaguar Heritage, Classic and Sports Cars: sale, scheduled for 21 September at Sandown Park.

EX-BMW PRESS CAR E38 M5 AND STUNNING E-TYPE LEAD ENTRIES FOR BARONS’ SUMMER CLASSIC SALE

Barons is bringing a really fine selection of classic and collectors’ cars to Sandown Park for its Summer Classic sale at the Surrey racecourse on July 16.

The entry list is headed by a very rare 1986 BMW E28 M5. This particular machine served as a BMW press car and was subsequently owned by a BMW Diagnostic Technician, and has a meticulously-maintained history file showing all the BMW OEM parts used both in its maintenance and in the incredibly detailed restoration carried out by the technician owner, for whom this was a real labour of love. It is one of only two RHD cars to leave the factory with both special individual paint and interior options and is the only one in this blue/black metallic colour combination. The interior is equally beautifully presented; when new, BMW Motorsport Gmbh trimmed all the door cards, centre console and dash in red leather and the roof lining in red suede. As part of its restoration, the interior was stripped, every leather part reconnolised and then painstakingly put back together. This remarkably impressive part of BMW’s history carries a guide price of £39,000-£46,000.

Sitting alongside the M5 at the head of the entry list is a stunning dark blue 1968 Jaguar E-type Series 1.5 2+2. It has led a very sheltered life, covering just 40,000 miles in 51 years, with only four owners from new. Offered complete with the registration number ‘536 BOY’, it has a guide price of £38,000-£45,000. 

An elegant piece of classic British motoring comes in the form of the sleek 1962 Bentley S2, in a sophisticated sage green over smoke green livery. This lovely motor car is in excellent condition and drives superbly (£26,000 - £30,000). And classic American automotive history is represented by the splendid 1930 Nash Ambassador 8 4-door sedan, in striking red and white livery. This head-turning automobile has a guide price of £25,000-£30,000.

The festival season is well and truly upon us, and the 1972 VW Type 2 Campervan on offer at Sandown Park is the perfect festival or holiday companion. In the last two years, it has been restored from a very sorry state to a very high standard by a VW specialist, retaining as many original parts as possible, including the engine, which has been retuned. The interior has been fully restored, with seats and trims reupholstered in white leather and new kitchen cabinetry and appliances installed. This lovely little campervan is just waiting to be snapped up and taken on adventures and has a guide price of £22,000-£27,000.

The 1975 Ford Granada Ghia Coupé going under the hammer on July 16 has been the subject of a 15-year nut-and-bolt restoration, with absolutely every component either reconditioned or replaced. This rare machine has only been driven on dry roads since the restoration was completed. Guide price: £9,000-£12,000.

Another immaculate motor car is the 1970 Rover 3.5-litre P5B. This handsome vehicle has been lovingly maintained throughout its life and has a comprehensive history file going back to when it was new, confirming the recorded mileage of 68,000. Guide price: £13,000-£16,000.

The 1973 Alfa Romeo GT Junior 1600 is perfect for road use and track days. It is fitted with an Alfa Romeo 2.0 litre Twin Spark engine and an Alfaholics fast road suspension set-up. In need of some cosmetic TLC, it has covered just 66,000 miles and has a guide price of £14,000-£18,000.

The charming 1961 Morris Mini Van in the sale is being sold by its only-ever owner and comes complete with documents including the order form for the van and the factory warranty. Amazingly it still has the original front and rear sub-frames and factory foam-filled sills. Guide price: £4,000-£6,000.

Early Volvo estates have a growing fanbase in the classic world, being both charismatic and hugely practical. The sale features a 1970 145 DL restoration project; with good examples now changing hands for more than £13,000 this is a great opportunity at a guide price of £1,000-£2,000.

Finally, the sale features two powerful Honda motorcycle combinations, both in very good condition and all being offered at realistic reserves. The 1982 Goldwing with Watsonian Sidecar has a guide price of £1,500-£3,000, while the1988 CB1000F combination is listed at £1,000-£2,000. Only being sold due to the recent passing of their owner, they are joined in a sale by a third Honda motorcycle from the same estate, a very good 1989 example of the VFR 750F, complete with original matching bright red panniers (£500-£1,500).

The Williams-Renault FW14B Formula 1 car, in which legendary British racing driver Nigel Mansellwon a record-setting five Grand Prix races (all from pole) at the start of his Championship-winning 1992 season, is to be offered by Bonhams at the Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale on 5 July 2019.

A number of motor-racing greats will line up alongside the 90s legend to be offered for sale next Friday:

• ‘Old Mother Gun’, the pre-war Le Mans and Brooklands racing Bentley.
• 1935 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300, a road-going version of the Le Mans and Mille Miglia-winning race car.
• An Edwardian-era pioneer, the ex-Douglas Fitzpatrick Metallurgique-Maybach 21-litre Three-Seater Special.

The FW14B

 “It was just a fantastic year, with a fantastic car!”, said 1992 World Champion Mansell about theFW14B in an interview with Bonhams Magazine.

Designed by celebrated Formula 1 engineer Adrian Newey, The FW14B is considered one of the most sophisticated, dominant and important Formula 1 racing cars of all time, featuring state-of-the-art technology, including 6-speed semi-automatic transmission, ride-levelling active suspension and cutting-edge aerodynamics, powered by Renault’s RS3 3.5-litre V10 engine.

Bonhams is offering FW14B chassis 08 for sale, the car which contested 13 of that year’s 16 qualifying Grand Prix races, driven by Nigel Mansell in the first seven.

Mansell and the FW14B 08 won five of those seven Grand Prix races – in South Africa (where he set the fastest lap), Mexico, Brazil, Spain and Imola (for San Marino) – all from pole, setting a new Formula 1 record for consecutive wins.

Mansell was narrowly beaten into second place at Monaco by Ayrton Senna before ‘Red Five’, as it was known under Mansell’s command, was entrusted to Italian team-mate, Riccardo Patrese.

Then known as ‘White Six’, chassis ‘08’ contested a further six Grand Prix races, scoring World Championship points in three of them to give Williams-Renault one-two positions in the 1992 Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship. Mansell notched up another four race wins in the sister car, becoming the first driver in Formula 1 racing history to win nine World Championship-qualifying Grand Prix races within a single season.

Having been meticulously well-preserved, initially by Williams Grand Prix Engineering and subsequently by a private collector, FW14B ‘08” survives today in running order. Both its V10-cylinder engine and sophisticated hydraulic active-suspension system have been tested in recent weeks.

Mark Osborne, Global Director of Motorsport at Bonhams, commented: "The FW14B was the high-water mark in Grand Prix design for ‘92 and remains today one of the most sophisticated cars to compete in F1, and we at Bonhams are honoured to have been entrusted with such a motor-racing legend."

Also roaring into the Bonhams sale at Goodwood is ‘Old Mother Gun’, the 1927 Bentley Jackson Special – a timely offering in Bentley’s centenary year. The first 41/2-litre Bentley was a Le Mans and Grand Prix winner before dominating at Brooklands in the 1930s, setting speed records of 120mph and 130mph, before later recording an official top speed of 148mph. Estimate on Request.

Another historic speed king at the sale is the 1935 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 ‘Long Chassis’ Tourer,one of the last examples of the very first Alfa Romeo eight-cylinder models – a genuine 100mph car powered by a 2300CC engine, which achieved consecutive wins at Le Mans, Mille Miglia, Spa 24 Hours and Targa Florio, and led to the development of the legendary Monoposto Tipo B, the most dominating 30’s Grand Prix racer. Estimate £4,000,000 – 5,000,000.  

An ultra-rare ex-Douglas Fitzpatrick 1907 Métallurgique-Maybach Zeppelin-engined Edwardian three-seater, estimate £800,000 - £1,000,000, is considered one of the world’s greatest motor cars.

Powered by a very rare 21-litre airship engine, this remarkable motor car is a veteran of hill climbs, sprints and circuit-racing and still holds a current FIA Class A standing-start 500-metre world record. This Métallurgique’s other claim to fame is that it featured in the 1968 motion picture Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

ACTOR AND COMEDIAN STEVE COOGAN TO SELL HIS 1970 ASTON MARTIN DBS V8 PRESS CAR AT THE SILVERSTONE CLASSIC SALE

The 1970 Aston Martin DBS V8 which was the original factory press car is coming to market at the Silverstone Classic sale and being offered directly from the current owner, actor and comedian Steve Coogan.

This is a very famous car and in the most incredible condition, with a fascinating story behind its provenance.

Designed by William Towns the Aston Martin DBS arrived in 1969 as a four-seater V8 capable of 160mph, which at the time was being built alongside the DB6 it was intended to replace. It was a clean modern looking car which was liked by many owners and featured the four headlamp styling until 1972.

This particular car was the original factory press car used to launch the new V8 model and also used by Motor Magazine, who in 1971 took the car onto the unfinished M4 and tested it over a measured mile at an average speed of 160mph, which at the time was a staggering performance. 20 years later Tony Dron who was one of their original testers was reacquainted with the car after it had undergone restoration, a copy of which is included with the car.

When the car left Aston Martin in 1973 little was known of its whereabouts until it was discovered in a field in Scotland but in need of restoration. This was duly carried out by specialists Chapman and Spooner. After it was purchased it underwent further work to fine tune the chassis by John Armitage and the injection system by marque specialists.

Multi-BAFTA winning Academy Award nominee and classic car collector, Steve Coogan, acquired the car in 2011 and has cherished this car whilst in his ownership. It has been maintained by marque specialists Aston Engineering and Stratton Motor Company, with a number of invoices detailing the expert attention lavished on the car.

The DBS V8 is in superb condition, presented in Dark Blue with black leather seats and a manual gearbox. It still retains the Becker-Mexico radio but with the addition of iPod connectivity. The car has led an interesting life and is an important part of Aston Martin’s history. This Aston Martin DBS V8 needs to be seen to be appreciated and Silverstone Auctions are delighted to have been asked by Steve Coogan to sell the car on his behalf at their sale on the 26th to 28th July at the Silverstone Classic. It is estimated at £145,000 to £165,000.

2018 Ferrari California T '70th Anniversary

Silverstone Auctions sale is really hotting up with an amazing selection of rare and high-performance Ferraris being offered along with related automobilia including the stunning “Il Fascino Ferrari” Art Edition from Taschen Books.

Taking place at the historic Silverstone Classic, this flagship sale is offering Ferraris to suit all enthusiasts of the marque. The cars being offered are all highly sought after.

The 2018 Ferrari California T “70th Anniversary” Edition is a remarkable tailor-made car made to celebrate a moment in Ferrari history. 70 different liveries were created making this car 1 of 1 and was inspired by the 1987 Ferrari F40 which was driven to an Italian GT championship victory in 1993 which went onto become the most successful F40 in history.

Being the only car finished in these colours, Livery number 54, makes this very desirable. Estimated at £255,000 to £285,000 with 78 delivery miles and in right-hand drive, this is a true limited edition, and one very special car.

Also on offer are two more Ferraris, separated by 10 years. The 1979 308 GT4 is a right-hand drive car which has the honour of having the Ferrari Classiche certification, confirming the authenticity of the car. Owned by the current vendor since 1985 this car has been looked after the whole time by Graypaul Ferrari, one of the few Officiana authorised dealers. Estimated at £40,000 to £50,000 this is easily one of the best 308 GT4s currently available. With 62,000 miles, maintained to the highest standards and owned by the current vendor for 34 years, this is undoubtedly a Best of Breed.

Ten years on we have a concours winning 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS. Estimated at £75,000 to £85,000 this is a well- regarded car in Ferrari circles and has just 31,584 miles and an extensive history file. It has been in the current ownership since 2011 and after meticulous maintenance, went on to win the 2016 Ferrari Owners Club Concours. The sale includes the trophies and certificates.

Operated by Ferrari since 1993 the Challenge series saw Ferrari produce a number of racing cars for customer motorsport. Silverstone Auctions has three versions of the Challenge cars for sale at their forthcoming auction, a 360, 430 and this 458 which are all very rare and pretty amazing cars.

This particular car was prepared by the factory to full European Challenge specification from new and then run and prepared by FF Corse, Ferrari specialists achieving a number of race wins. This car has been upgraded by FF Corse with their GTC aero pack and has been fitted with a V-BOX Lite video recording system. With the seat belts in date until January 2020 and supplied with two sets of wheels and tyres, this is a race winning car for an estimate of £100,000 to £120,000, alternatively it would make an incredible track day car.

THE LATE BARRIE “WHIZZO” WILLIAMS’ COLLECTION OF CARS TO BE AUCTIONED AT SILVERSTONE CLASSIC SALE

1964 Mini Cooper 1071S

The late Barrie “Whizzo” Williams’ collection is to be auctioned at the Silverstone Classic sale on the 26th to 28th July. The collection includes Whizzo’s Mini Cooper 1071S, a 1972 Lancia Fulvia, Fastakart and box trailer plus his paddock moped.

Whizzo, who passed away in September 2018, was universally known and loved throughout the motorsport fraternity and was very well known for his exuberant antics on track, to which he took great delight in talking about.

Silverstone Auctions are delighted to have been appointed to sell this lovely and very personal collection, the most famous of which is the 1964 Mini Cooper 1071S, which Barrie ordered from his hospital bed after an accident and amazingly received just three weeks later, despite the six-month waiting list.

In 1964 Barrie entered 120 MNP into its first rally, the International Welsh Rally, as a private entry, which he and his co-driver John Griffiths famously won. This was the first international win by a Cooper S and came before Paddy Hopkirk’s works win in Monte Carlo the same year.

Barrie continued to use the Mini for the next two seasons, competing in major rallies both in the British Isles and abroad. In 1965 Barrie sold the Mini to a friend, who in turned sold it to another friend.

Some years later an opportunity arose for Barrie to buy back 120 MNP, which he did and restored the car back to the 1964 Welsh Rally specification sourcing and using original components. He also spent some time sourcing all the original paperwork which had been separated during the sales, they were found complete in the loft of a previous owner’s ex-wife.

Over the years Barrie used the car regularly as a road car and often went for lunch in it to the BRDC, where he was a member.

Estimated at £60,000 to £80,000, this is a wonderful car, cherished and loved by a man who had a huge fondness for British motorsport.

Guy Lees-Milne, general manager, Silverstone Auctions commented: “Barrie was an exceptional racer who touched the lives of many people with his larger than life character. We are honoured to be auctioning this history-making and very special car at our Silverstone Classic sale.”

The second car from Whizzo’s estate is the 1972 Lancia Fulvia. This is the Series II HF and according to the history file, the previous owner had the car restored by IN Racing, a classic sports car restoration specialist, over four years with documentation confirming this. The car has been finished to an excellent standard in the correct Rosso with a black leather interior and the engine bay is almost Concours. This is a lovely example of a Series II Fulvia HF coming with an array of documentation and estimated at £30,000 to £35,000.

The next lot from Barrie’s collection and something even more personal is his Fastakart and box trailer being offered at No Reserve. The business was founded by Barrie’s father in Bromyard in the very late 1950s and proved to be a very successful kart when up against the other British and American designs. His flexible tea-tray design mated to a Villiers engine was to prove far superior and with Barrie as the works driver. This 1961 kart is fitted with the Villiers 197cc engine and gearbox and also comes with a history file including a number of family photos.

The final lot from the collection is Barrie’s paddock bike, a 2007 Gilera Stalker which he used to get around and chat to so many people. This is also being offered at No Reserve.

RARE AND EXCLUSIVE CARS TO FEATURE IN SILVERSTONE CLASSIC SALE

Silverstone Auctions sale on the 26th to 28th July is set to feature four very special lots among the entries already consigned.

The sale which takes place at the Silverstone Classic race meeting will feature some very well-known models with superb provenance and rarity, with limited build being the united theme.

The auction already features one Group B rarity, the never rallied Metro 6R4 and to spice the sale up further, a Renault 5 Turbo 2 Evolution homologation has now been consigned. 1 of 200 cars built as required to fulfil the requirements to go rallying and take on the likes of the Metro 6R4 and Lancias.

Having just recently been imported to the UK from France, this 1985 Renault 5 Turbo 2 is the 8221 variant and number 133 of 200 built to allow for the official homologation of the Maxi 5 to compete in Group B rallying. It came with a capacity increase to 180bhp and an alloy roof and doors to comply with the forthcoming rallying regulations. There is some known history to this car, it was delivered new to a Renault dealer in Montlhery and is fitted with the very rare, but magnificent Turbo 1 seats, which are considered far better and a very desirable upgrade (the original T2 seats are also included). This is a left-hand drive car which has its NOVA certificate and is currently awaiting a UK registration number. The car has recently had the engine rebuilt and serviced and also undergone a thorough inspection by Renault 5 Turbo specialist, Olly Melliard, whose has produced a full report to accompany the car. Estimated at £75,000 to £85,000, but with further research on this R5 Turbo’s history, its value could only increase.

The Maserati Bora was designed by the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro as a mid-engine grand tourer bringing sophistication to the mid-engine platform. Of the 530 Boras built from 1971 to 1979, just 42 right-hand drive cars were fitted with the 4.7 litre V8 engine and this particular car is one of those very rare models. Presented in Rosso Fuoco this fabulous car has been part of a Swiss collection for many years and is now being offered for sale in original and unrestored condition for an estimated £125,000 to £175,000.

The Renault 5 Turbo 2 will certainly attract interest as Group B rallying and anything to do with it has a strong following. The E-Type is a very special car for Jaguar enthusiasts, as very few of these commemorative editions have come to market.”

The Jaguar E-Type has always been considered one of the most desirable British sports cars and to commemorate the end of production in 1974 for the Series 3, they built 50 final editions of the V12 roadster with only 19 fitted with a manual transmission. This particular car being offered is number 6 and out of the 50 and also one of those 19, making this an exceptionally rare and sought-after E-Type. A matching numbers car with just four keepers and coming from a significant private collection where it has resided for the last 10 years. It has had a lot of expenditure lavished on it to ensure it is presented to a high standard and estimated at £175,000 to £195,000.

Registered in July 1958, this stunning AC Aceca-Bristol is thought to be the first of 89 Bristol engined cars in right- hand drive form. The car was delivered new to Ken Rudd whose company were official suppliers of AC cars to fulfil an order from a Flying Officer before it was purchased by Graham Enfield of Camden Motors in 1966 who was to own it until 2005 when the current vendor acquired the car. It comes with a wonderfully detailed story of the vendors journey to bring the Aceca back to its former glory and become a multiple winning Concours car. The car was partially stripped in 1967 and remained that way for the next 38 years when it was rolled out of storage along with 50 boxes of original parts. The journey to restore the car then started and on Christmas day in 2014 it was driven for the first time in over 47 years and with all the small jobs being finished over the next couple of years the car won its first Concours in May 2015 and continued to do so every year. Estimated at £110,000 to £130,000, this is a fantastic matching numbers, original gearbox and chassis car, with a wonderful story.
