ASTON, NASH AND ALFA TAKE TOP HONOURS AT BARONS’ SUMMER CLASSIC SALE

ASTON, NASH AND ALFA TAKE TOP HONOURS AT
BARONS’ SUMMER CLASSIC SALE

A 2005 Aston Martin DB9 Volante in need of some TLC roared past its £13,000-£20,000 guide price to sell for £26,620, the top price of the day achieved at Barons’ Summer Classic sale at Sandown Park racecourse on July 16.

This stylish if a little worn example of a modern British classic was neck and neck in the bidding stakes with a handsome piece of classic American automotive history, the splendid red and white 1930 Nash Ambassador 8 4-door sedan, which went to a new home for £26,400.

Third past the post was a really pretty - and potent - ochre-coloured 1973 Alfa Romeo GT Junior 1600, which exceeded top estimate to sell for £22,000. De-bumpered, fitted with an Alfa Romeo 2.0 litre Twin Spark engine, an Alfaholics fast road suspension set-up and road-legal semi-slick tyres it’s just begging to be taken out on a track day.

Sweeping in in fourth and fifth places were an ex-Bentley press car 2003 Continental GT, and a sleek 1962 Bentley S2, in a sophisticated sage green over smoke green livery. They achieved £21,450 and £19,800 respectively.

The immaculate 1970 Rover 3.5-litre P5B exceeded top estimate, selling for £16,940 and, further down the field, a rare 1998 Mercedes C43 AMG estate blew its £2,500-£4,000 estimate out of the water to achieve £6,050.

The Barons team is now looking forward to its annual Jaguar Heritage, Classic and Sports Cars: sale, scheduled for 21 September at Sandown Park.

1950s SPORTS RACING LEGENDS TOP RESULTS AS RM SOTHEBY’S VILLA ERBA SALE GROSSES €19.8 MILLION

1950s SPORTS RACING LEGENDS TOP RESULTS AS
RM SOTHEBY’S VILLA ERBA SALE GROSSES
€19.8 MILLION

1954 FERRARI 500 MONDIAL SPIDER AND 1957 PORSCHE 550A SPYDER STEAL THE LIMELIGHT BRINGING €3,717,500 AND €3,380,000 RESPECTIVELY

RM Sotheby’s, the official auction house of the esteemed Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, concluded its fifth, successful Villa Erba sale on the shores of Lake Como, Italy, grossing an impressive €19,798,085 and with five cars achieving figures in excess of €1,000,000. Bidders at the exclusive event represented no less than 30 countries, with more than 25 per cent being the first-time RM Sotheby’s clientele.

Pre-sale, it was two incredible sports racing machines from the 1950s which had garnered significant attention, and on the night it was the same two cars which stole the show. The top seller was the original, matching-numbers 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider, chassis no. 0448 MD, the 12th of just 13 Pinin Farina Spiders built. The car boasts the extensive period racing history and is an exceptionally eligible car for historic racing and concours events. Fully restored and Ferrari Classiche certified, the car was deservedly bought for€3,717,500.

No car exemplifies the appeal of a 1950s sports racing car more than a 1957 Porsche 550A Spyder, providing exceptional usability and ultimate eligibility for historic events. The car sold at Villa Erba is one of only 40 cars made and benefits from a well-known and highly documented history. Chassis no. 550A-0121 was first delivered to Denmark in 1957 and enjoyed competition history there as well as in Africa where it went on to be sold. The car has undergone a complete, body-off restoration by leading Porsche specialists and has only covered 100km on the road since returning from the workshop. This wonderful piece of Porsche history achieved €3,380,000.

1960s Aston Martins are always desirable and none more so than the rare 1965 Aston Martin Short-Chassis Volante, which is one of the final examples of a mere 37 built. Offered after a period of long-term ownership and beautifully restored in Switzerland by renowned experts, the car is matching numbers and features a rare and desirable hardtop. It fully deserved to be the night’s third highest seller, achieving an impressive €1,805,000. The sale was notable for featuring an incredible collection of rare Zagato-bodied cars in celebration of the coachbuilder’s 100th anniversary, and leading the group was a stunning 1955 Fiat 8V Coupé by Zagato, a car highly coveted by collectors. The car sold, chassis no. 000076, is one of 26 coupes built and brought a worthy €1,771,250

.Augustin Sabatié-Garat, Car Specialist and the Villa Erba Auction Manager, RM Sotheby’s, says: “To achieve nearly €20 million in gross sales is a great result, and it’s testament to the high-quality cars that were on offer at Villa Erba. We have once again demonstrated that the best 1950s sports racing cars with strong provenance remain the most highly prized collector cars in this hobby-driven market, while cars such as the Aston Martin Volante and Fiat 8V Coupe demonstrate how the appeal of timeless design and low production numbers are key factors in driving demand among enthusiasts and collectors.”

It was the absolutely stunning 1931 Bugatti Type 50 Roadster that rounded out the top five sellers on the night. This incredible supercharged, eight-cylinder engined touring car, is one of two remaining examples with original Jean Bugatti-designed factory coachwork and was offered in beautiful restored condition. With factory records including the original bill of sale, this pre-war great achieved €1,411,250.

Aside from the Fiat 8V, the other Zagato bodied cars sold extremely well in the sale; a fitting tribute in the legendary designer’s 100thanniversary year. The 2019 Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake, the 12th of only 99 built, made €511,250; the glorious and well-restored 1966 Lancia Flaminia Super Sport 3C 2.8 made €252,500; the 1987 Aston Martin V8 Vantage, one of only 14 examples with manual transmission, made €331,250; the 1990 Ferrari 348 TB Zagato Elaborazione, the prototype example and the 1991 Geneva show car, made €218,500; and the diminutive and highly sought-after 1959 Fiat-Abarth 750 GT 'Double Bubble' by Zagato, made €103,500.

A PAIR OF JAGUAR XJ220S LEAP TO THE TOP AT HEYTHROP PARK

A PAIR OF JAGUAR XJ220S LEAP TO THE TOP AT HEYTHROP PARK

Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire was the stunning new venue for Silverstone Auctions two sales, The Heythrop Classic Car sale and A Sale of British Marques, achieving a combined sale of over £2.1 million on Saturday.
With lots of interest both in the room, online and from around the world and in an unsettled market, a 51% sale rate was achieved with some very strong results for some very exceptional cars.
The Sale of British Marques opened with some very fast and furious bidding, as Jay Kay’s Mini was first off the block and being offered at no reserve. This car had attracted significant interest due to its ownership and unusual specification, a bar in the boot, Chesterfield upholstery and velvet curtains. It sold for an amazing £22,500.
Lot 423, the 1935 Bentley 7.4 litre V12 Special sold for an incredible £106,875, whilst Lot 409, the 1975 Jenson Interceptor Series 3 with just over 9,000 miles on the clock, sold for £62,250.
In association with the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club, the Sale of British Marques saw some outstanding cars achieving success with a pair of Jaguar XJ220s leaping to the top, both selling for over £300,000 including buyer’s premium. Lot 410 was the left-hand drive version achieving £303,750 and a new home in Europe, whilst the right-hand version, Lot 429, stayed in the UK and sold for £337,500.
Lot 404 the 1965 Jaguar E-type in original paint sold for £56,625 followed by an almost unrepeatable 1962 Jaguar Mk2 3.8 which had just 8,725 miles on the clock, found a new home for £69,750. Lot 436 the 1964 Jaguar E-type Series 1 which was sold as a restoration project for £69,750.
The Heythrop Classic Car sale which took place earlier in the day saw Lot 303, the wonderful 1967 Honda S800 which had attracted a lot of interest, sell for £17,325 followed by Lot 304 the 1975 BMW 3.0 CSi achieve £41,625.
Lot 313, the 1978 Ferrari 400 GT Series 1 sold for £41,063 and Lot 316, the 1988 Porsche 911 (930) Turbo Targa G50 which had also attracted a lot of interest both before the sale and on preview, sold for £78,750.
The Automobilia sale which opened proceedings achieved a fantastic sale rate of 81% with some very notable sales. The collection of signed photographs, Lot 142, sold for £1,560 and Lot 110 the multi-signed race helmet achieved a price of £1,320. Lot 106, the 1970 Beckmeter Shell fuel pump sold for a staggering £4,080.
Arwel Richards, Auction Manager for the sale commented: "It was the first time that we staged a sale at Heythrop Park and the glorious setting matched the quality of the cars we had on offer. The two XJ220s we sold showed that the market still appreciates rare and low mileage cars, with the 8,000-mile Jaguar MkII 3.8 smashing its estimate is another example.”
"As one of the few auction houses that offers immediate "buy it now" prices for cars that don’t sell under the hammer, the sales team worked throughout Saturday evening and Sunday and sold a number of cars in post-sale deals. In a market that is challenging, but showing signs of growth, we have adapted and implemented strategies to ensure we still provide the best service to vendors and buyers."

1964 Aston Martin DB5 Sports Saloon to Vantage specification sold for £636,600
Following on the heels of sales in the USA and on the Continent, the UK division of Bonhams’ motoring group sprang into action yesterday, conducting the annual Goodwood Members’ Meeting Sale, achieving a 70 per cent sell rate totalling some £5,613,530 - an increase of around £2 million on last year's sale, with a similar volume of lots.
A 1964 Aston Martin DB5 Sports Saloon to Vantage specification proved to be the ‘best of British’ as the top lot, realising £636,600 from an international buyer in the room.
British and German marques dominated the top selling lots. A 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SC Coupé from Turkey’s Key Museum achieved £356,500, while a 1955 Porsche 356A Speedster sold for £241,500.
A 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo SE ‘Slant Nose’ Coupé sold for £161,000, well above its estimate (£100,000 - £130,000), and the NEC Classic Car Show Meguiar’s Concours winner, a 1960 Porsche 356B 1600S T5 Cabriolet, realised £138,000.
Stardust was provided by an ex- Sir Elton John Ferrari 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer, delivered new to the singer in 1974, which realised £224,250, while a star of the racetrack, a 1966 McLaren M1B Group 7 ‘Can Am’ Sports Racer, sold for £172,500 to a telephone bidder.
Similarly attracting high bids was the private number plate ‘U8’ which achieved £166,750. Also reflecting the varied lots featured in yesterday’s sale were a child’s Auto Union Type C ‘Silver Arrow’ pedal car by Audi Quattro which sold for £6,325 and a Lamborghini Cingolato 3402 CTL tractor which achieved an estimate-beating £27,600.
James Knight, Group Motoring Chairman at Bonhams, said: “We are very pleased with our first UK sale of 2019. It exceeded last year's total by some distance and we attracted global interest, selling lots to the USA, Australia, the home market and any number of countries on the Continent.
With lots ranging from pioneering Edwardian vehicles to rock stars’ sports cars, Bonhams’ offering yesterday was typically unique and diverse.”
Other highlights included:
- 1966 Citroen DS21 Décapotable - £117,300
- 1908 Columbia Electric Victoria Phaeton -  £58,650
- 1927 Delage 14HP DIS Tourer -  £49,450
- 1954 Austin Healey 100 BN1 Roadster -  £42,500
-  Ex-Dean Martin 1973 Excalibur Series II Roadster - £75,900

Fittingly, following the successful sale of the DB5 at Goodwood, the marque will be the focus of Bonhams' Aston Martin Sale on 19 May at Wormsley Estate, High Wycombe.

Bonhams will return to the Goodwood estate on two further occasions this year: 5 July for The Festival of Speed sale and 14 September for The Revival Sale.
