This past week, RM Auctions, a division of RM Sotheby’s Group, achieved strong results for the auction house’s 13th annual Hershey sale, generating $15,569,594 with 97 per cent of all lots sold. Held during the world-renowned Antique Automobile Club of America’s (AACA) Eastern Division Fall Meet, the two-evening auction saw more than 200 historic automobiles, offered in large part from significant single-owner collections, alongside a wide array of memorabilia cross the auction stage. A packed auction room, enthusiastic bidding, and strong prices were seen on Thursday and Friday evening, with bidders hailing from no less than 23 countries, and nearly 25 per cent of bidders representing first-time RM Sotheby’s Group clientele.

The star lot of the Hershey sale was a 1930 Cadillac V-16 Sport Phaeton by Fleetwood, which represented an opportunity to acquire arguably the most famous, well-known surviving V-16 sport phaeton. Featured in the 1964 film The Carpetbaggers and believed to have been originally owned by legendary silver-screen actor Richard Arlen, the V-16 ignited a furious competition between a bidder in the room and on the phone, eventually securing a final $1,221,000 to applause from the crowd on Friday (est. $900k/1.1m). Rounding out the top three sellers was a one-of-six 1931 Marmon Sixteen Coupe offered from the Collection of Jack Dunning and complete with its original body, engine, and chassis at a final $550,000, while a remarkably rare, highly original, and beautifully restored 1911 Oldsmobile Model 28 Autocrat Roadster offered from the noted collection of Mr Jim Bradley reached a final $495,000.

The auction successfully kicked off on Thursday night with the session dedicated solely to The Merrick Auto Museum Collection, comprised of over 100 fascinating American Brass Era, high-wheeler, and pre-war cars, alongside a large selection of automobilia – offered entirely without reserve. The top seller of the collection was the 1925 Duesenberg Model A Four-Passenger Sport Phaeton by Millspaugh & Irish. Equipped with a race-bred overhead-cam eight-cylinder engine and formerly on display for 15 years at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum, the Model A sold for a final $236,500 (est. $150k/200k). During an exciting moment on Thursday night, the seldom-seen 1900 Rockwell Hansom Cab, the first motorized taxicab in New York City, incited spirited bidding in the auction room before selling for $132,000, shattering its pre-sale estimate of $35,000 - $45,000. Additional Thursday highlights include a Paris-built 1900 De Dion-Bouton Type E Vis-à-Vis Voiturette, which achieved $121,000, a 1916 Rauch & Lang JX-6 Dual Control Electric Coach, which brought $110,000, more than doubling its pre-sale high estimate, and an eye-catching 1930 Cord L-29 Brougham, which sold for $103,400 (est. $50k/75k).

Interesting and unusual motor cars also starred at RM Auctions Hershey sale, with a pair of vintage trucks from The William B. Ruger Jr. Collection firing up the audience on Friday evening. The first, a 1924 American LaFrance Type 40 Combination Truck, was offered from 65 years of ownership under the Ruger family and sold for $115,500 to a bidder in the room (est. $35k/45k). A well-maintained 1936 American LaFrance 'Senior' 400 Series Squad Truck, equipped with a powerful 240 hp overhead-cam V-12 engine, also successfully sold to a participant in the auction room, achieving $82,500 (est. $40k/60k).

Beyond the cars, the Hershey sale featured 128 lots of memorabilia, signage, vintage motor car parts, original artwork, and ephemera. Among a host of fascinating pieces were the Hot Air Balloon Ceiling Fans offered from the Merrick Auto Museum Collection, which soared past their estimate to a final price of $6,037 on Thursday night (est. $800/1,200). The Ferrari Cavallino Porcelain Dinnerware Set by Richard Ginori opened a sustained bidding contest between three bidders on the phone and one in the room on Friday, eventually more than tripling its pre-sale high estimate and bringing $18,400 (est. $4k/6k). Friday also saw several vintage toy cars go under the hammer and surpass pre-sale estimates, with a pair of Buddy L Trucks achieving a final $2,300 (est. $300/400).

“Hershey has proved once again to be the perfect destination for the offering of private collections and important early automotive design,” said Gord Duff, Global Head of Auctions, RM Sotheby’s Group, following the auction. “Both sale nights saw numerous lots secure prices well above their pre-sale estimates, demonstrating a very strong interest in historic American motor cars. We also saw continued lively bidding in the auction room and from clients participating remotely via phone and internet for rare cars from single-owner collections offered without reserve. We could not be more pleased with this year’s results, a show of strength for the Brass and Classic era market.”

RM SOTHEBY’S TAJ MA GARAJ COLLECTION SALE SEES EXCEPTIONAL RESULTS AT $5.7 MILLION TOTAL

RM SOTHEBY’S TAJ MA GARAJ COLLECTION SALE SEES EXCEPTIONAL RESULTS AT $5.7 MILLION TOTAL
SINGLE-DAY PRESENTATION OF THE LATE JOHN DIXON’S PORSCHE PARADISE
FEATURED MORE THAN 30 MOTOR CARS AND 356 LOTS OF MEMORABILIA
PORSCHE 356 A CARRERA GT SPEEDSTER LEADS OFFERING AT $1.38 MILLION

DAYTON, Ohio (30 September 2019) – RM Sotheby’s presented the company’s 36th single-owner private collection at auction this past weekend in Dayton, Ohio—the renowned Taj Ma Garaj Collection, grossing a total $5,685,859. Featuring 32 rare and eclectic Porsche and Volkswagen motor vehicles, as well as 356 lots of memorabilia from the late prominent collector, Mr John Dixon, the single-day absolute auction drew spirited bidding activity from no less than 20 countries around the world, with nearly 60 per cent of bidders representing first-time RM Sotheby’s clientele.

The auction began before a packed house, with every seat in the auction area filled as collectors raised their paddles for the chance to go home with one of John Dixon’s prized collectables or cars. Remote bidder participation was also strong, with more than 40 percent of bidders joining the auction via phone or Internet. Several motor cars drew nine or more individual bidders to the phone lines alone.

Strong prices were achieved across the automobile and motor vehicle offering, including for rare cars long held within the Taj Ma Garaj Collection as well as for those ordered or created by John Dixon himself. Leading the cars was a desirable “Four-Cam” 1957 Porsche 356 A Carrera GT Speedster by Reutter, equipped with its original, matching-numbers 1500 GT engine and beautifully restored to the highest standard. A fantastic example of the lightest, most race-prepared version of the model, the 356 A Carrera GT secured a final $1,380,000.

Additional car highlights include several lots which far surpassed pre-sale expectations, led by: a 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe, custom-ordered by John Dixon and wearing several unique Porsche Special Wishes options, which sold for a final $368,000 (est. $225/275k), a 1981 Porsche 924 Carrera GTS Clubsport, one of just 15 such cars and showing just 47 km, which brought a final $357,000 (est. $250/350k), a nicely optioned, low-mileage 1970 Porsche 914-6 which achieved $134,400 (est. $100/120k), and a never-raced 1988 Porsche Rothmans 944 Turbo Cup, which brought a record $98,000 (est. $75/100k).

John Dixon was well-known for the humour and creativity used in some of his cars and custom-builds. Quirky automobiles from the Taj Ma Garaj Collection drew much pre-sale and auction-room interest, with several cars exceeding expectations. Leading the weird and wonderful lineup was the unique 1953 Porsche 356 Limousine Custom, which incited spirited bidding in the room before selling for $207,200, while a one-of-six 1971 Mangosta Sport Buggy smashed its pre-sale estimate at a final $106,400 (est. $50/75k

The Taj Ma Garaj Collection auction successfully kicked off on Saturday morning with 356 lots of memorabilia, including sought-after Porsche unobtainium, rare literature, collectables, engines, and an assortment of arcade ephemera, going under the hammer. Bidding was lively across the collectable lots, with above-estimate prices achieved for a Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet Junior at $30,000 (est. $7/9k), a Porsche 550 Spyder Junior at $19,200 (est. $8/12k), and a Porsche 356 A Speedster Junior at $15,600 (est. $8/12k), among many others.

Following the auction, Donnie Gould, Senior Car Specialist, RM Sotheby’s, said: “We could not be more thrilled with the success of the Taj Ma Garaj auction this past weekend. Our team prides ourselves in providing custom and concierge-level private collection solutions for our clients, and it’s always particularly exciting when the collector and cars offer such individuality. The entire audience had the pleasure of enjoying John Dixon’s humour and fun spirit, with his caricature pictured prominently on the wall behind the auction podium. Every corner of the Taj Ma Garaj space was a fun, witty, and off-the-wall idea that represented his personality, and clients were treated to an exciting auction as well as the amazing collection setting that he envisioned and realized. It was an honour to work with the Dixon family on this special sale, and we’re delighted to see outstanding prices achieved across multiple categories of the Porsche market.”

Hillary Dixon West, daughter of the late John Dixon, adds: “This auction was an emotional process for our family as we celebrated our father’s love for Porsche and the place in our hearts that the Taj Ma Garaj holds. RM Sotheby’s conducted an event that was so much more than a successful auction… they celebrated John’s humour and creativity as well as his attention to detail and passion for collecting only the very best of the best. From day one, they came in and took care of everything from start to finish, which speaks to the experience and skill of the RM team. Throughout the entire auction, the smiling caricature of John as the Taj Ma Garaj genie was behind the podium, and we’re sure it took place exactly as he would have wanted, smiling and enjoying every bit of it!”

RM SOTHEBY’S SÁRAGGA COLLECTION ENJOYS HUGE SUCCESS AS STUNNING 1931 BENTLEY 8-LITRE TOUR TOPS €10 MILLION SALE

RM SOTHEBY’S SÁRAGGA COLLECTION ENJOYS HUGE SUCCESS AS STUNNING 1931 BENTLEY 8-LITRE TOUR TOPS €10 MILLION SALE

COMPORTA, Portugal (23 September 2019) – RM Sotheby’s has enjoyed a fantastic, first-ever auction in Portugal where the company offered the incredible, single-owner Sáragga Collection, entirely without reserve on 21 September. A packed venue saw the sale gross €10,191,425, featuring 127 cars representing all budgets and eras of the collector car market. The Sáragga Collection was offered from a location on the owner’s estate, and hundreds of buyers filled the room to secure cars from this unique sale near the stunning beach resort region of Comporta. The room was enthusiastic and highly animated throughout the sale, with many results commanding applause and standing ovations from the audience. A remarkable 52 percent of bidders were new to RM Sotheby’s and no less than 38 countries were represented.

The undoubted star of the show was the 1931 Bentley 8-Litre Tourer, a magnificent and imposing pre-war touring car and jewel for any collection. A well-documented car with a strong history file detailing a comprehensive restoration, there was highly spirited bidding in the room that saw the car achieve an excellent €680,000. Fine Porsches were a notable feature of the collection, and it was the matching numbers 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring which was the focus of much pre-sale attention. Well documented, restored and resplendent in its original colour of Signal Orange, this blue-chip collector car made an outstanding €602,375.

The Collection was distinctive for featuring many cars with outstanding Portuguese provenance, drawing local market enthusiasts. In particular, a rare and highly desirable 1939 Delahaye 135M Cabriolet by Chapron was on offer, a car delivered new to Delahaye’s Lisbon showroom and presented in its original colours, this former concours winner made a final €331,250. The rare 1955 WD Denzel 1300, believed to be one of only 30 in existence, and again boasting Portuguese provenance, brought €314,375. Another notable car to garner significant pre-sale interest was the one-of-a-kind 1966 Mercedes-Benz 600 Sedan, featuring a unique custom-made glass roof and coachbuilt by Henri Chapron of Paris. Having resided in Portugal since 1972 and in single ownership for 30 years, the car found a new home for €342,500.Other collectable Porsches sold from the Collection included the eye-catching 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera RS, presenting beautifully in sought-after and rare Rubystone Red paintwork. This modern classic made an impressive €241,250, while the RS theme continued with a 2010 911 GT3 RS, which made €174,800. The beautifully restored Porsche 356 B Roadster was another notable lot that did very well on the night, achieving €151,800.

An additional lot which achieved a strong price was the 1956 Lancia Aurelia B24S Convertible, which made €231,125, while cars worthy of particular note for shattering expectations include the 1972 Alpine-Renault A110 1300, which grossed €195,500, more than doubling its high estimate, alongside the 1925 Amilcar CGS, which doubled its high estimate, bringing €100,050 on the night.

Paul Darvill, Car Specialist at RM Sotheby’s, said: “We enjoyed a remarkable afternoon here in Portugal. This was a very large collection of diverse collector cars, and we have conducted a significant sale in a completely new market for RM Sotheby’s. We are truly delighted with the results, as many lots far exceeded pre-sale estimates, and overall the sale performed admirably, delivering a healthy performance across the board. The packed venue was complimented by telephone bids and no less than 22 percent of all bidders putting our online bidding capabilities to good use.”
Maarten ten Holder, Head of Europe, RM Sotheby’s adds: “We are delighted Mr Sáragga entrusted his remarkable collection to us and it has been a delight to conduct our first-ever sale in Portugal alongside our local market colleagues at Sotheby’s. The room was packed and there was standing room only throughout the entire sale. Attendance was beyond our expectations and we had multiple bidders on every lot, with more than half being completely new to RM Sotheby’s, which is an amazing statistic for any auction.”

RM SOTHEBY’S VILLA ERBA SALE GROSSES
€19.8 MILLION

1954 FERRARI 500 MONDIAL SPIDER AND 1957 PORSCHE 550A SPYDER STEAL THE LIMELIGHT BRINGING €3,717,500 AND €3,380,000 RESPECTIVELY

RM Sotheby’s, the official auction house of the esteemed Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, concluded its fifth, successful Villa Erba sale on the shores of Lake Como, Italy, grossing an impressive €19,798,085 and with five cars achieving figures in excess of €1,000,000. Bidders at the exclusive event represented no less than 30 countries, with more than 25 per cent being the first-time RM Sotheby’s clientele.

Pre-sale, it was two incredible sports racing machines from the 1950s which had garnered significant attention, and on the night it was the same two cars which stole the show. The top seller was the original, matching-numbers 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider, chassis no. 0448 MD, the 12th of just 13 Pinin Farina Spiders built. The car boasts the extensive period racing history and is an exceptionally eligible car for historic racing and concours events. Fully restored and Ferrari Classiche certified, the car was deservedly bought for€3,717,500.

No car exemplifies the appeal of a 1950s sports racing car more than a 1957 Porsche 550A Spyder, providing exceptional usability and ultimate eligibility for historic events. The car sold at Villa Erba is one of only 40 cars made and benefits from a well-known and highly documented history. Chassis no. 550A-0121 was first delivered to Denmark in 1957 and enjoyed competition history there as well as in Africa where it went on to be sold. The car has undergone a complete, body-off restoration by leading Porsche specialists and has only covered 100km on the road since returning from the workshop. This wonderful piece of Porsche history achieved €3,380,000.

1960s Aston Martins are always desirable and none more so than the rare 1965 Aston Martin Short-Chassis Volante, which is one of the final examples of a mere 37 built. Offered after a period of long-term ownership and beautifully restored in Switzerland by renowned experts, the car is matching numbers and features a rare and desirable hardtop. It fully deserved to be the night’s third highest seller, achieving an impressive €1,805,000. The sale was notable for featuring an incredible collection of rare Zagato-bodied cars in celebration of the coachbuilder’s 100th anniversary, and leading the group was a stunning 1955 Fiat 8V Coupé by Zagato, a car highly coveted by collectors. The car sold, chassis no. 000076, is one of 26 coupes built and brought a worthy €1,771,250

.Augustin Sabatié-Garat, Car Specialist and the Villa Erba Auction Manager, RM Sotheby’s, says: “To achieve nearly €20 million in gross sales is a great result, and it’s testament to the high-quality cars that were on offer at Villa Erba. We have once again demonstrated that the best 1950s sports racing cars with strong provenance remain the most highly prized collector cars in this hobby-driven market, while cars such as the Aston Martin Volante and Fiat 8V Coupe demonstrate how the appeal of timeless design and low production numbers are key factors in driving demand among enthusiasts and collectors.”

It was the absolutely stunning 1931 Bugatti Type 50 Roadster that rounded out the top five sellers on the night. This incredible supercharged, eight-cylinder engined touring car, is one of two remaining examples with original Jean Bugatti-designed factory coachwork and was offered in beautiful restored condition. With factory records including the original bill of sale, this pre-war great achieved €1,411,250.

Aside from the Fiat 8V, the other Zagato bodied cars sold extremely well in the sale; a fitting tribute in the legendary designer’s 100thanniversary year. The 2019 Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake, the 12th of only 99 built, made €511,250; the glorious and well-restored 1966 Lancia Flaminia Super Sport 3C 2.8 made €252,500; the 1987 Aston Martin V8 Vantage, one of only 14 examples with manual transmission, made €331,250; the 1990 Ferrari 348 TB Zagato Elaborazione, the prototype example and the 1991 Geneva show car, made €218,500; and the diminutive and highly sought-after 1959 Fiat-Abarth 750 GT 'Double Bubble' by Zagato, made €103,500.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (1 April 2019) – This past weekend, RM Auctions, a division of the RM Sotheby’s Group, held its annual Fort Lauderdale sale, achieving the best result in the event’s 17-year history. Total sales across the two-day auction reached more than $23.2 million, with more than 80 percent of the 476 lots on offer finding new homes. RM Auctions also saw strong bidder attendance at the sale, with 24 countries represented by participants, and one third of bidders representing first-time RM Auctions clientele.

The Fort Lauderdale auction was led by a 600-mile 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari, finished in eye-catching Giallo Modena over a black and yellow interior. The hypercar reached a final price of $3,080,000 during the Saturday afternoon sale session before a packed auction room, becoming the most valuable car yet sold at the Fort Lauderdale event. Stealing the Friday spotlight was a highly desirable, matching-numbers 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing offered from significant celebrity ownership, which achieved a final$1,155,000 to become the second highest sale of the weekend.

“We could not be happier with the results of our 17th Fort Lauderdale auction,” said Gord Duff, Global Head of Auctions, RM Sotheby’s Group, following the sale. “We achieved our strongest results to date, again with a smaller, higher quality group of cars, and we’re thrilled with the sell-through rate we secured for our valued clients. On top of the most valuable car ever sold at the event, we also saw continued lively bidding for special cars from private collections offered without reserve, with exceptional interest from clients participating remotely via the phone and internet as well.”

Additional highlights across the Fort Lauderdale auction included continued rising interest in modern and emerging collectibles. A 1998 Lamborghini Diablo SV Monterey Edition, the final example of just 20 built, sold for $258,500 following an extended bidding competition, exceeding its pre-sale estimate of $200,000-$225,000 (offered without reserve). A 2010 Ferrari California, presented in Grigio Alloy with Bordeaux Daytona-style seats, also offered without reserve, sold for a final $115,500, with a portion of proceeds to benefit The Boys & Girls Club of Broward County, an organization near and dear to the RM Auctions team.

A selection of cars offered from the much-buzzed-about Youngtimer Collection also continued to draw tremendous interest in Fort Lauderdale, which many of the 19 lots exceeding pre-sale expectations. Highlights include a very well-preserved, 3,000-mile 1991 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo, which reached a final $66,000 (est. $30/40k, offered without reserve) to set a new record for the model at auction. A six-speed 2009 Aston Martin DBS also smashed pre-sale estimates at $121,000 (est. $80/100k), while a 1994 Bentley Touring Limousine reached $71,500 (est. $30/40k, offered without reserve). The remaining 85 motor cars from the Youngtimer Collection will be offered at RM Sotheby’s upcoming inaugural German sale, set for 11-12 April at the Techno Classica Essen show.

Burdick Collection bringing $99,000 (est. $65/85k).

The event saw a curated group of cars at the Broward County Convention Center, including such rad rarities as a 3500-mile, six-speed 1998 Toyota Supra, a 1986 Lamborghini “Downdraft” Countach, one of three in Rosso Speciale, a 1989 RUF RCT Evo, and a 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC AMG 6.0 Wide-Body with a quad-cam motor and Recaro interior.
