COMPORTA, Portugal (23 September 2019) – RM Sotheby’s has enjoyed a fantastic, first-ever auction in Portugal where the company offered the incredible, single-owner Sáragga Collection, entirely without reserve on 21 September. A packed venue saw the sale gross €10,191,425, featuring 127 cars representing all budgets and eras of the collector car market. The Sáragga Collection was offered from a location on the owner’s estate, and hundreds of buyers filled the room to secure cars from this unique sale near the stunning beach resort region of Comporta. The room was enthusiastic and highly animated throughout the sale, with many results commanding applause and standing ovations from the audience. A remarkable 52 percent of bidders were new to RM Sotheby’s and no less than 38 countries were represented.

The undoubted star of the show was the 1931 Bentley 8-Litre Tourer, a magnificent and imposing pre-war touring car and jewel for any collection. A well-documented car with a strong history file detailing a comprehensive restoration, there was highly spirited bidding in the room that saw the car achieve an excellent €680,000. Fine Porsches were a notable feature of the collection, and it was the matching numbers 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring which was the focus of much pre-sale attention. Well documented, restored and resplendent in its original colour of Signal Orange, this blue-chip collector car made an outstanding €602,375.

The Collection was distinctive for featuring many cars with outstanding Portuguese provenance, drawing local market enthusiasts. In particular, a rare and highly desirable 1939 Delahaye 135M Cabriolet by Chapron was on offer, a car delivered new to Delahaye’s Lisbon showroom and presented in its original colours, this former concours winner made a final €331,250. The rare 1955 WD Denzel 1300, believed to be one of only 30 in existence, and again boasting Portuguese provenance, brought €314,375. Another notable car to garner significant pre-sale interest was the one-of-a-kind 1966 Mercedes-Benz 600 Sedan, featuring a unique custom-made glass roof and coachbuilt by Henri Chapron of Paris. Having resided in Portugal since 1972 and in single ownership for 30 years, the car found a new home for €342,500.Other collectable Porsches sold from the Collection included the eye-catching 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera RS, presenting beautifully in sought-after and rare Rubystone Red paintwork. This modern classic made an impressive €241,250, while the RS theme continued with a 2010 911 GT3 RS, which made €174,800. The beautifully restored Porsche 356 B Roadster was another notable lot that did very well on the night, achieving €151,800.

An additional lot which achieved a strong price was the 1956 Lancia Aurelia B24S Convertible, which made €231,125, while cars worthy of particular note for shattering expectations include the 1972 Alpine-Renault A110 1300, which grossed €195,500, more than doubling its high estimate, alongside the 1925 Amilcar CGS, which doubled its high estimate, bringing €100,050 on the night.

An ultra-rare 1952 Gordini Type 15S Barquette (Sport Barchetta), proved to be the Chatelaine of Chantilly and the top lot in today's Bonhams sale taking place at the prestigious Arts et Elegance concours, in the grounds of the famous Château.

Following extensive national interest prior to the sale and a bidding battle, the Gordini 15S sold for an impressive total of €708,000 to a European buyer in the room, who earned applause from the chic visitors attending the motoring garden party.

The purchaser, a private collector and historic racer, is now the proud owner of a rare and important piece of French motoring and motorsport history, with his new acquisition being one of only two four-cylinder barchettas built by the legendary French sports car manufacturer. The other belongs to the renowned Schlumpf Collection in France's national motor museum in Mulhouse.

This remarkable motor car also has a fascinating history of competing in two top motorsport series – firstly as one of only five 'Type 11' single-seater 'monopostos' built in 1947 by the legendary Amédée Gordini for his Grand Prix racing team, driven, among others by the great Juan-Manuel Fangio, Jen Behra, Robert Manzon, Prince Bira of Siam and Aldo Gordini.

In 1952 the car was transformed, by Gordini himself, into a two-seat Barchetta, known as '15S', within 11 months an 'Équipe Gordini' challenger in the legendary Le Mans 24 hours race and leading sports car series.

Following an extensive restoration in the early 2000s, as a patriotic act by collector and former director of Renault Formula 1, Jean Sage, the 15S competed in the Mille Miglia tribute rally, Monaco Historic Grand Prix and Le Mans Classic event, until 2009.

Philip Kantor, Bonhams Head of European Motoring, said: "We are delighted that the Gordini will remain in Europe and we look forward to perhaps seeing it displayed at Chantilly in the near future!"

Other highlights from the Bonhams Chantilly Sale include:

• 1953 Aston Martin DB2/4 Mark 1, first owned by the Belgian Baron Maurice Solvay, realised €212,400. 

• 1962 Citroën DS Décapotable, a rare and highly-desirable early 'ashtray' model, achieved €182,900.

• 1965 Fiat 500 Elégance Beach Car, built by Carrozzeria Savio and displayed at the 1965 Turin Motor Show, achieved €87,320. 

• 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SS Coupé, designed by Bertone and offered in stunning condition, realised €89,680.

RM Sotheby’s celebrated 70 years of Porsche on Saturday with the company’s single-marque Porsche 70^th Anniversary Auction at the Porsche Experience Center Atlanta (PEC), also the home of Porsche Cars North America. RM Sotheby’s achieved $25.8 million in total sales, with 92 percent of all lots finding new homes.

Purveyors of Porsche descended on the PEC for the Friday preview of the cars on offer, alongside a symposium, gala, and special concert performed by music legend and Porsche enthusiast, John Oates. Enthusiastic bidders on auction day represented no less than 25 countries around the world, with nearly 50 percent bidding with RM Sotheby’s for the first time. Bidding at the single-marque sale was spirited from the very start, with plenty of interest in the wide variety of memorabilia on offer and many of those collectible lots exceeding expectations, including a group of Porsche 911 Sales Literature, which well-surpassed its estimate at a final $20,400 (est. $5k/7k).

The offering of 63 of the world’s most important and most sought-after, privately-owned Porsche models was led by a 1985 Porsche 959 Paris-Dakar, one of just three built to contest the 1985 Paris-Dakar Rally as a Works entry and the very first example ever offered at auction. One of seven developmental cars, four of which are retained by Porsche, chassis no. 010015 was piloted by three-time Paris-Dakar winner René Metge, representing Porsche in the most grueling rally of all time. After a sustained competition between several bidders in the room and on the phone, the 959 sold for a final $5,945,000, nearly doubling its high estimate (est. $3.0m/3.4m).

Additional motor car highlights included the 1958 Porsche 356 A 1600 ‘Super’ Speedster, which, after having emerged from storage since 1983, was recently returned to driving condition and would be the ideal restoration project. Complete with its original matching-numbers drivetrain and desirable 1600 ‘Super’ engine, the wonderfully distressed Speedster was offered without reserve, soaring past its high estimate to bring a final $307,500 after tremendous interest (est. $125k/150k).

In what was one of the most anticipated moments of the auction, the 2018 Porsche 911 Turbo Classic Series "Project Gold" came under the hammer to applause from the crowd and significant interest on the phones and in the room. An exciting ten-minute bidding competition ensued, with no less than 9 bidders in the room and on the phone, with the car eventually selling for an incredible $3,415,000 to a bidder onsite at the PEC. Project Gold is the final air-cooled 911 Turbo, built 20 years after the end of 993 production. This incredible undertaking began at the Porsche factory one and a half years ago with an existing genuine Type 993 body shell. The experts at Porsche Classic were able to rely on a selection of over 6,500 parts, assembling this “new” 993 Turbo S at the Porsche Classic restoration workshop near Stuttgart. An exciting car with a worthy cause, proceeds from the sale of Project Gold will benefit the Ferry Porsche foundation.
