JAGUAR, MERCEDES AND FORD MAKE IT 1, 2, 3 AT BARONS, SANDOWN PARK

A beautiful 1965 Series 1 Jaguar E-type FHC was first past the finishing post at Barons’ Jaguar Heritage, Classic & Sports Car sale at Sandown Park racecourse last Friday, September 20th. The E-type, which has been the subject of a £60,000 restoration, sold for £71,500 and was followed by a stunning 1968 Mercedes-Benz W113 290SL Pagoda, an original UK RHD car, which achieved £66,000.

The third-highest price of the day was the £25,850 achieved for the sprightly 1936 Ford Model 68 with safari roof, which thoroughly exceeded its £17,000 top estimate. This motor car has a fine history in endurance rallying, having won the Spirit of the Rally trophy in the 2003 Safari Challenge, and subsequently completed the Circuit of Ireland, Africa’s Chipembele Rally and the Peking to Paris Rally. 

63 out of the 100 lots sold, with keen bidding seeing notable cars such as the very rare 1972 Citroen DS21 ‘Jubilee’ EFI Pallas exceeding its guide price to sell for £19,470. An original and rare factory manual supercharged 1995 straight six Jaguar XJR, one of just 105 built-in RHD, nearly doubled its estimate, selling for £4,840, while a fine future classic - a 2007 Jaguar S type XS Sport - performed equally well, selling for £4,510.

All 14 of the classic and future classic motorcycles, trikes, monkey bikes and quad bikes in the sale were snapped up by enthusiasts, with the 1969 Honda Z50A monkey bikes - perfect for the historic racing paddock and one signed by John Surtees and the other by Sir Stirling Moss - selling well, and the two Yamaha Banshees each exceeding top estimate.

1992 Ford Sierra XR4X4 Ex-Noel Edmonds House Party Car

The CCA sale on the 5th October at the Warwickshire Event Centre will be selling one of the props from Noel’s House Party, the famous BBC One TV show, an Ex-Garda Police Car.

Among other lots, there are some lovely British classics, a Sunbeam Tiger, a series 2 Jaguar E-type and two classic Jaguars, a Mk 2 and a 340 from the same owner.

All the puns will be coming out for this lot, now is your chance to Grab a Police Car that featured in the famous BBC television show Noel’s House Party. This 1992 Ford Sierra XR4x4 as shown in the documents was originally an Irish Garda car which was purchased for the tv programme. In full working order after being recommissioned, it retains its Police livery and working flashing lights. Powered by the 2.9-litre V6 we are told it drives very well Offered at £5,000 to £7,000 this is a great opportunity to own a piece of TV memorabilia from one of the most famous shows of the 1990s.

Now for something a bit more classic, a real British Bulldog from the swinging sixties era, a 1965 Sunbeam Tiger. This series 1 V8 has had four keepers and been in the same ownership since 1992. The car has been treated to some slight upgrades with improved brakes and suspension as well as a tweaked engine. Fitted with lovely 15- inch Pansport American alloys and presented in Mediterranean Blue, this is a stunning and well-sorted sports car with an estimate of £40,000 to £50,000.

Our next three lots are all Jaguars and one not to be missed is this 1970 Series 2 E-Type Roadster. Estimated at £40,000 to £45,000 this is a very sensible guide price for a British Icon of the motoring world. This 4.2 E-Type was imported from America in 1989 and was professionally converted to right-hand-drive. It has been with the current owner for the last 18 years and has an indicated mileage of 79,822 miles. Finished in Regency Red and with a removable hard-top, this is a great E-type which has been guided to allow for some tidying up and detailing. 

Our final two cars are both from the same vendor and finished in Old English White. The first is a 1961 Jaguar Mk2 2.4 with Overdrive. An original matching numbers car which has undergone some excellent sympathetic restoration to the bodywork, mechanicals and interior leatherwork and documented in the excellent history file. Estimated t £18,000 to £22,000 this lovely classic also has the number plate 84 UPJ included in the sale.

The second of the Old English White Jaguars is the 340. In 1967 Jaguar rebadged the Mk 2 with the 3.4-litre cars being badged as 340. This Jaguar has been subject to a full bodywork, mechanical, electrical and trim restoration over the last four years and is now a lovely matching numbers car. It does come with an interesting history file with photographs of the rebuild and other associated documentation. Estimated at £20,000 to £25,000 another great car to be enjoyed.

There are always people out there who are keen to own memorabilia and as this programme had a huge following, Grab a Grand, Wait Til I Get You Home and who could forget Mr Blobby? This car could be a chuckle for someone. Just imagine what you could do with it!”

MCLAREN F1 ‘LM-SPECIFICATION’ LEADS NIGHT TWO OF RM SOTHEBY’S MONTEREY AUCTION WITH RECORD $19.8 MILLION

MONTEREY, California (16 August 2019) – This evening in Monterey, California, RM Sotheby’s sold the 1994 McLaren F1 ‘LM-Specification’, the world’s most revered modern supercar, for $19.8 million, becoming the most valuable McLaren ever sold at auction.

The world’s fastest naturally aspirated production car, serial no. 018 is one of just two upgraded to Le Mans specification by McLaren, equipped with the GTR engine and an extra high-downforce package that went above and beyond the coachwork effects of the original five LM cars. Used on a handful of tours and rallies, the fastidiously-cared-for McLaren was offered at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction in exceptional condition, showing just 21,500 km, the best imaginable iteration of an already perfect machine. With the crowd on their feet as the car drove onto the auction podium, four bidders vied for four-and-a-half-minutes before the car sold to a private collector based in the United States

The sale also saw exceptional results with the 1965 Ford GT40 Roadster Prototype, chassis no. GT/108, which sold for $7.65 million (est. $7m/9m). The forefather of “the pace car for an entire company”, the car was influential in the development of Detroit’s first purpose-built a prototype-class race car, which famously went on to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans for four consecutive years.

RACE CARS HEADING TO AUCTION AT SILVERSTONE CLASSIC SALE

One of the most significant touring cars is coming to Silverstone Auctions sale on the 26th to 28th July at the Silverstone Classic Sale.

Sir John Whitmore’s Ford Lotus Cortina that took him to the 1965 European Touring Car Championship crown is being offered for sale with an estimated price of £190,000 to £220,000.

Prepared by Alan Mann Racing for Sir John Whitmore, this car dominated the 1965 season, it won eight out of the nine rounds, leaving all behind in its wake. The great Jack Sears shared the car with Sir John Whitmore that years for an assault on the Nurburgring 6 hour race which they won overall and set a new lap record. It was then retired from competition at the end of the 1965 season, where it was used by Ford for a promotional tour.

In 1967 Sir John bought the car and it remained in his ownership until 1995. During that time, the car resided in the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu from 1972 to 1978 and also spent some time with Jack Sears on his farm in Norfolk. It was then purchased by an American enthusiast who had no intention of racing the Cortina but continued to preserve the history of this most famous car.

In 2013 the Ford Lotus Cortina returned to the UK to be sold at auction has just covered 1,000 miles whilst in the care of the previous owner. The current vendor, who is a family friend of the Manns, is now offering the car for sale with just 11,464 miles, albeit mainly race miles. The history behind this car is so complete, with results, articles from Autosport, correspondence and period photographs.

This is one of the most historical and important race cars to come on the market that was raced and belonged to one of the legends of British Motorsport.

Other race cars being offered for sale is a rare 1965 Studebaker Lark Daytona 500 estimated at £65,000 to £80,000 and excitingly is offered at No Reserve. Having secured invitations to some of the most high-profile historic race meetings such as Goodwood, this is a highly developed, expertly prepared and extremely competitive car. It comes with a host of spares including wheels, tyres, differentials, body panels and further assorted parts. This car is welcome in the Masters Series, HRDC Historic Touring Cars, Bernie’s V8s and HSCC Touring Cars. There is also highly likely to be an invitation from Goodwood when their period for racing is 1960s saloons.

For something that is more of a club man specification, a 1998 Dare Ginetta is being offered at £22,000 to £26,000 which is equally as happy on the road and supplied with both a soft and a hard top. The current vendor is the fourth owner of the car and has always kept it garaged and covered and been used on the road only when it is dry. The chassis and bodywork were rebuilt in 2010 and at the same time, the engine was also rebuilt. This car is currently on a SORN but it wouldn’t take much to get it back into action.

Also on offer is this beautifully prepared 1991 BMW E30 M3 2.5 Competition estimated at £75,000 to £80,000. A well-proven car in the world of rallying and touring car racing, this car has been painstakingly prepared to the highest standard over the last four to five years. An extensive list of its specification which includes a bodyshell built to Prodrive Rally M3 spec can be found on the Silverstone Auctions website.

The Silverstone Classic Auction takes place on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th July 2019 offering an exclusive selection of classic cars, sports cars and supercars, including automobilia and luxury watches. The lots can be previewed on the 25th July 2019 from 13.30 to 18.30 and on the 26th of July from 09.00 to 18.00.
