MORE THAN 90 MOTOR CARS AND AN ARRAY OF PARTS AND MEMORABILIA OFFERED ALMOST ENTIRELY WITHOUT RESERVE

  • RM Auctions set to offer The Ed Meurer Collection at Auburn Fall auction, 29 August - 1 September in Indiana
  • Offered almost entirely without reserve, the collection comprises over 90 diverse pre- and post-war classics
  • Auburn Fall set to present more than 700 quality collector cars, wide selection of automobilia, onsite swap meet, car corral, and automotive activities for the entire family

RM Auctions is delighted to announce that it will present The Ed Meurer Collection of Detroit, Michigan, almost entirely without reserve, at its annual Auburn Fall sale, held on Thursday, 29 August – Sunday, 1 September during the renowned Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival, with the collection crossing the block during the Friday sale session.

Ed Meurer, Jr. bought his first classic car, a worn and paint-chipped 1936 Ford Cabriolet, in 1958 and meticulously restored it over four years to Concours condition. It was the acquisition and successful restoration of this car that ignited his passion and led him to begin collecting Fords of the 1930s, which he admired in his youth, and later expanded his collection to comprise a range of classics, with marques including Cadillac, Buick, Chrysler, Packard, Nash cars, Studebaker, and Jaguar.

In 2001, Ed built an extension to his publishing company in Metro Detroit large enough to house his entire collection of antique vehicles and memorabilia, inadvertently becoming the fifth largest private collector car museum in Michigan. By 2015 his collection had expanded to more than 90 motor cars, consisting largely of fine American classics spanning the 1930s to 1980s, and 4,000 sq. ft. of memorabilia, including vintage neon signs, gas pumps, and rare automobile parts. Well known and respected in hobby circles, Ed's garage became a must-see destination for dozens of car clubs wishing to marvel at his eclectic car collection.

Offered publicly for the very first time, The Ed Meurer Collection represents over 60 years of passion. Standouts within the collection include two rarities boasting unique histories, the 1938 Chrysler Custom Limousine by LeBaron and the 1958 Imperial Crown Limousine by Ghia. Powered by an inline eight-cylinder engine married to a manual transmission, the Chrysler Limousine was ordered new by Joseph P. Kennedy, father of President John F. Kennedy, and used in London between 1938 and 1940 while he served as U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain. Fitted with a host of exterior and interior options and finished in attractive dark green, the custom limo would shine in any American classics or pre-war motor car collection. One of only 31 built, the 1958 Imperial Crown Limousine by Ghia is believed to have been purchased new by the prominent Eaton family of Toronto, owners of Eaton’s department store chain. Personal friends of the British royal family, the Eatons often hosted Queen Elizabeth II on her visits to North America. It’s understood the family loaned the Queen and her staff two cars during her trip to Canada in 1959. This car is believed to be one of the two, primarily used for the evening and more formal events. Purchased by Ed Meurer in the early 1990s, the car has since been beautifully restored and is one of the finest examples in existence.

Other highlights comprise a 1935 Packard Twelve Convertible with stunning coachwork by Rollston; incredible full classics, including a 1931 Auburn Phaeton, a 1937 Cord 812 Beverly, and a 1930 Cadillac V-16 Seven-Passenger Imperial Sedan; a 1956 Continental Mark II, one of the most expensive cars in its day; a beautiful group of Ford Woodie station wagons; and even Chrysler’s iconic, luxury letter car series.

After visiting The Ed Meurer Collection, Gord Duff, Global Head of Auctions, RM Sotheby’s Group, said: “This collection is an incredible historical work built over more than six decades and featuring some of the finest American pre- and post-war cars. We’re thrilled to bring these important, interesting classics from such a renowned collector to Auburn Fall this year.”

Additional information on RM Auctions’ Auburn Fall sale is available at rmsothebys.com. A selection of cars from The Meurer Collection, including the 1960 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible and the 1935 Packard Twelve Convertible will be available for advanced viewing at the 2019 Concours D'Elegance of America on 26-28 July at The Inn at St. John’s in Plymouth, Michigan. AMERICAN PACKARD GOES BACK TO ITS BIRTHPLACE

AMERICAN PACKARD GOES BACK TO ITS BIRTHPLACE

1937 Packard 115C Convertible Coupe

A Packard 115C Convertible Coupe is to be sold by the international car auctioneers COYS just two miles from where it was first built in 1937. This very rare right-hand drive Packard was discovered in a garage by the vendor’s father in 1979 and will go under the hammer at Syon Park this Saturday, 13th October. The Packard underwent seven years of restoration after which it was seen regularly at events such as the Biggin Hill International Air Fair and the Bromley Pageant of Motoring. Estimate £22,000- £27,000.
Amongst the broad selection of historic and classic vehicles coming to auction, is an exceptional 1959 Leyland AEC Routemaster Double Deck Bus by Park Royal. It has been well kept since its 1984 withdrawal from service and is in very original condition, having escaped London Transport’s modernisation programme in the 1990’s. The paintwork is excellent, with a very straight body, excellent original interior, and a clean chassis and the batteries are relatively new. Estimate £50,000- £60,000.
A 2001 Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina which is also up for auction was designed to recall the glories of successful road racers of the past, such as the 166 MM, and thoroughbred front-engined 12-cylinder Ferrari roadsters of the calibre of the 250 GT California and 365 GTS/4 Daytona. The car is finished in Blu Tour de France with a Crema leather interior and has a fabulous low mileage example; it has covered a mere 558 miles from new and is presented in simply fabulous condition. Estimate £290,000- £330,000.
Also, going under the hammer is a 1971 Rolls Royce Corniche Convertible which was first delivered to the late Sir Bruce Forsyth in July 1971 and was owned by him for seven years. It has a wonderful Ming Blue coachwork and sumptuous blue interior. It is a very well maintained car and has an extensive history file. Estimate £60,000- £70,000.
A 1992 Lamborghini Diablo is also on offer. This car was first registered to former Formula 1 constructor Walter Wolf racing, subsequently finding its way to the United States, and now being offered from a UK-based Lamborghini collection. It is finished in Yellow with a black leather interior. In 2018 the car was the star in the Lisa Riley show Sooty and Sweep, which was subsequently featured in the Lamborghini Club magazine Rivista Veloce. Estimate £100,000- £120,000.
The 1973 ISO Fidia is a wonderful proposition for a collector. The car has been modified in recent years with alloy cylinder heads, upgraded Ford ‘Automatic Over Drive’ (AOD) gearbox and has been finished in the classic (and original) combination of mid-blue metallic with a Champagne leather interior, the Fidia exudes a level of plushness that only the very best luxury GT cars of the 70s are able to achieve. It is offered with a current UK V5 registration document and MoT test certificate. The estimate is £50,000- £60,000.
Some of the other notable cars that are going under the hammer are:
Lot 138 – 2005 Mercedes SLR McLaren £180,000- £200,000
Lot 110 - 1997 Range Rover ‘Mobile Office’ Concept £25,000- £35,000

PACKARDS AND PRIVATE COLLECTIONS LEAD HIGHLIGHTS FOR RM AUCTIONS’ HERSHEY SALE OFFERING INCLUDES 11 MOTOR CARS FROM THE LLOYD NEEDHAM COLLECTION

PACKARDS AND PRIVATE COLLECTIONS LEAD HIGHLIGHTS FOR
RM AUCTIONS’ HERSHEY SALE
OFFERING INCLUDES 11 MOTOR CARS FROM THE LLOYD NEEDHAM COLLECTION
  • RM Auctions presents exceptional Packard models and well-known private collections at Hershey, 11-12 October
  • 12th annual sale is an internationally-attended highlight of the AACA Eastern Division Fall Meet
  • Additional motor cars from the Richard L. Burdick Collection also on offer
  • An updated list of all entries for the Hershey sale available at rmsothebys.com

RM Auctions is delighted to announce highlights for the company’s 12th annual Hershey sale, set for 11-12 October at Hershey Lodge in Pennsylvania.
Each October, all roads lead to Hershey, where RM Auctions will again present an exceptional array of American Veteran, Brass, Classic, and post-war automobiles during the Antique Automobile Club of America’s (AACA) Eastern Division Fall Meet. A mainstay on the global collector car calendar, drawing enthusiasts from across North America, Europe, and beyond, this year’s auction offering comprises more than 140 motor cars and a wide selection of more than 80 lots of automobilia.
RM’s Hershey sale has long been known for its presentation of cars from well-known North American collectors, and the 2018 sale is no exception. RM Auctions is pleased to present 11 motor cars from the Lloyd Needham Collection at Hershey, entirely without reserve. The late Mr. Needham was well-known for his many years in the hobby and his true love of his collection and was an early customer of Rob Myers and RM Auto Restoration, forming a relationship that would last more than 35 years. The group of cars on offer is led by a 1936 Packard Twelve Convertible Victoria, equipped with its original body, engine and chassis and wearing a well-maintained high-quality restoration in striking colors (Est. $225,000 - $275,000), and a well-optioned and accessorized 1948 Chrysler Town and Country Convertible in the rare, special-order color of Noel Green Metallic (Est. $120,000 - $140,000).

Every year, we look forward to returning to Hershey, where genuine enthusiasm for the collector car hobby is alive and well,” says Gord Duff, Global Head of Auctions, RM Sotheby’s Group. “For years now, our Hershey event has been a true auction destination for private collections and as the market leader in single owner segment sales, this year’s Hershey auction is both emblematic and exciting for that reason. We always look forward to this auction in particular as it allows our team an opportunity to loosen the ties, have a BBQ and enjoy great cars and with our fellow passionate collectors and enthusiasts.”
An exceptional Packard also leads 19 additional American motors cars offered entirely without reserve from The Richard L. Burdick Collection at Hershey, following success for the collection at Auburn Fall. The 1931 Packard Custom Eight Roadster wears its original numbers-matching chassis and engine, as well as the sportiest body style from one of the great Packard years. Clothed in a well-maintained older AACA National First Prize-winning restoration, the Packard features numerous desirable accessories and would be a superb choice for light freshening and continued showing (Est. $180,000 - $240,000). Additional highlights from the collection include a 1901 Oldsmobile Model R ‘Curved Dash’ Runabout, originally won by five-year-old Victor F. Hitz via a nickel raffle ticket at the Chicago Automobile Show. Hitz held on to the car for the remainder of his long life, with his heirs passing it on to Richard L. Burdick in just 1984. One of the most original examples of its kind offered in decades, the Oldsmobile begs for continued preservation and display (Est. $50,000 - $75,000). Also on offer is the late Mr. Burdick’s1916 Hudson Series H Super Six Great Race Car. A fierce, long-time participant, officiant, and former owner of the event, Mr. Burdick was devoted to the Great Race. One of the most exciting vehicles in the collection, the Hudson was the winner of the 2000 Great Race and would be an ideal, potentially victorious rally competitor for its next owner (Est. $75,000 - $100,000).

Outside of the private collections, additional spectacular Packard models are set to shine at Hershey, including a 1941 Packard Custom Super Eight One Eighty Convertible Victoria by Darrin, one of just 35 examples built for the model year. With documented known ownership history since new, the Super Eight One Eighty was shown at the 1956 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and has been beautifully maintained all its life (Est. $350,000 - $425,000).
