RM Auctions is delighted to announce that it will present the respected Merrick Auto Museum Collection, entirely without reserve, at its 13^th annual Hershey sale, held on Thursday 10 October - Friday, 11 October during the Antique Automobile Club of America’s (AACA) Eastern Division Fall Meet, with the Thursday evening auction dedicated to the collection. 

Jim Merrick and his son, Richard, first started their collection more than 25 years ago in Nebraska with 11 fully restored antique automobiles, officially incorporating The Merrick Auto Museum in 1992. Over the years, they transformed their small assembly of cars, with the help of grandson Russell, into a diverse collection of over 100 fascinating American Brass Era, high-wheeler, and pre-war cars spanning from 1900 to the late 1930s, alongside a wide array of memorabilia, signage, vintage motor car parts and ephemera. As avid automobile enthusiasts with a passion for both the hobby and the history of the industry, the Merrick family has extensively researched every car and piece of memorabilia they acquired, amassing a full research library.

Offered publicly for the very first time, the Merrick Auto Museum Collection focuses on the early decades of motoring featuring significant pre-war cars alongside many of the rare electric, steam and gas vehicles are known today as orphan cars – built by manufacturers that have discontinued business entirely. Leading the group is a matching-numbers 1925 Duesenberg Model A Touring by Millspaugh & Irish with a three-speed sliding gear transmission, straight-eight engine and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, making it one of the first American automobiles to be so-equipped. Formerly of the Harrah Automobile Collection, chassis no. 1080 joined the Merrick Collection in 1996 – the same year it starred as the Auburn Cord Duesenberg (ACD) Club Festival poster car. Ideal for ACD and CCCA activities, this car will shine in any classic motor car collection.

An Edwardian Era highlight is the 1900 De Dion-Bouton Series E Vis- à-Vis, one of the earliest automobiles within the Merrick Collection. Dating back almost 120 years, this pioneer automobile with remarkably modern features was built in France by the most famous early names in motoring: Count Albert de Dion, George Bouton, and Charles Trépardoux. The body style is a charming vis-à-vis or “face-to-face” with the passengers seated facing the driver, who rides atop the car’s 3.5-hp engine. Typical of a French automobile, the detail is extravagant and includes decorative grillwork cut into the body in floral patterns, dramatic flared fenders, and brass “De Dion Bouton” script. This attractive car is ready and eligible for many historic tours including the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. Another Veteran standout in the Merrick lineup is the historic 1900 Rockwell Hansom Cab. A staple of New York’s cobbled streets in the early 1900s, the opportunity to own this seldom-seen “working class car” should not be passed up. 

Also sure to steal the spotlight is the 1902 Gasmobile Stanhope, the first American luxury automobile and one of the fastest road cars in the early 1900s. Built by the Automobile Company of America in New York between 1899 and 1902, Gasmobiles are a true rarity. This two-passenger Stanhope is also eligible for the esteemed London to Brighton Veteran Car Run and equipped with an impressive three-cylinder engine, producing 10 horsepower under full load. Significantly, this example was a National First Prize winner in Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) competition in 1977.

     

Additional rarities featured within the Merrick Auto Museum Collection include an important early American plug-in electric car, the 1904 Pope-Waverley Chelsea, known in period as "by far the best Electric on the market". Producing 3-hp, this runabout model interestingly houses its single electric motor in the rear of the car. The seldom-seen 1906 Queen Model E on offer is believed to be one of fewer than 15 Model E examples produced. Powered by an opposed two-cylinder engine and finished in attractive blue, the Touring-bodied automobile certainly lives up to its royal name. A rare survivor from one of Detroit’s little-known early manufacturers, this example would be an ideal car for undertaking various one- and two-cylinder tours, including HCCA events. Rounding out the highlights is an exceptional turn of the century 1906 White Model F Touring sporting handsome touring coachwork. A leading manufacturer of steam cars for the first decade of the 20th Century, the White Company of Cleveland, Ohio, is most well-known for its innovative steam-powered automobiles.

While the Merrick family is passing their prized collection on to new caretakers, they will continue to follow their passion for historical pursuits by serving as archivists and historians for Brass Era and orphaned cars. Additional information on RM Auctions’ annual Hershey sale is available at rmsothebys.com. Two superb sales by Silverstone Auctions, The British Marques and Heythrop Classic Car sale will take place across one day on the 11th May at Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire.

With 75 lots of rare and exotic cars and 109 lots of Automobilia, a busy and exciting sale awaits bidders.

Amongst the lots are the Aston Martin DB5, once owned by renowned car collector Chris Evans and used as the official car on a limited edition of stamps by the Royal Mail. A rare DB2 Washboard in stunning condition and a fabulous Ferrari Daytona Spyder, are just a some of the highlighted Lots.

We are also delighted that Jamiroquai frontman, Jay Kay, has given us a personal preview of his Mini Cooper Sport, Lot 401 and its unique features to bidders. You can see his amusing introduction to “Chuckles” in the video below.

The British Marques Sale, in association with the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club, has a wide selection of Jaguars on offer including the two Jaguar XJ220s (Lots 410 & 429), a number of E-types in varying conditions and an astoundingly low mileage Mk2 3.8 (Lot 405).

Lot 449 in the British Marques Sale is a very rare Lotus Exige, Chassis No1 with just 17,100 miles on the clock and only 1,400 covered in the last 12 years. This car has a very interesting history, it was tested by Richard Hammond in the period, Lotus Cars and Coronation St, Emmerdale and Shameless actor Scott Wright where previous owners. With only 100 of these Series 1 cars thought to remain in right-hand drive, Chassis No1 is estimated at £40,000 to £50,000.

The next two highlighted Lots, 427 and 434, are rather special and perfect for summer. Firstly, we have the 1991 Bentley Continental Convertible, Lot 427, one of just 421 built and supplied new to Japan before being sold to its second owner in California where it stayed with limited usage until 2005. The previous vendor bought the car with 21,000 miles from new before it was sold to the current vendor in 2013 who used it for high days and holidays, covering just 5,700 miles whilst in his care. A rare opportunity for an estimate of £80,000 to £90,000.

The second of these Lots is 434, the 1973 Rolls-Royce Corniche DHC, which has had just three owners and covered only 29,000 miles. A stunning Corniche with an extensive history folder all very neatly filed, this car is totally original and untouched. Fastidiously looked after, it is preserved in incredible condition and estimated at £70,000 to £80,000.

Lot 313 in the Heythrop sale, the 1978 Ferrari 400 GT Series 1 is an incredible opportunity to own. It is 1 of only 27 right-hand drive cars in manual, with less than 45,000 miles and has had only four previous owners, two of which are from the same family. With an unbroken history file, tool kit, original Neiman keys a recent service, this car is offered with an estimate of £38,000 to £44,000.

In the Automobilia and Watches sale, there are a wide selection of items to choose from. If you are planning to go on holiday why not treat yourself to a set of Ferrari 355 Schedoni Luggage? A three-piece set which today is very rare and no longer being produced. Including locks and keys, but no dust cover, estimated at £800 to £1,200.

Alternatively, if you have a Ferrari 328/Mondial, how about an original Cavallino print luggage set. Manufactured by Italstyle during the 1970s, this is a lovely set of luggage estimated at £2,000 to £2,500.

1956 Bentley S1 Pickup

Silverstone Auctions sale at Heythrop Park on the 11th May will feature amongst its lots some quirky and famous cars from the world of motoring.

Leading the quirky and famous charge in the British Marques sale is the Mini Cooper Sport owned by Jay Kay of Jamiroquai, with the very unusual Bentley S1 Pickup and in the Heythrop sale is the Excalibur SS formerly owned by film star Tony Curtis with a Honda’s revvy little sportscar the S800.

The first sale of the day at Heythrop is the Classic Car sale which includes Tony Curtis’ 1965 Excalibur SS, the sixth edition built and bought brand new by the film actor. The car was then bought directly from Tony Curtis by philanthropist David S. Gilmore for the Gilmore Car Museum in Michigan where it was on display for forty-years. In 2008 the car was imported to the UK after being purchased by the current vendor for his collection. The car is presented in superb unrestored condition with just under 6,500 miles, with the current vendor covering just 200 miles whilst in his ownership. The car is offered at £65,000 to £75,000 with a file that contains all the provenance records, a signed copy of Tony Curtis’ autobiography in which he proudly lists his car collection, with the Excalibur namechecked.

"Excaliburs rarely come to market and the SS Series 1 is by far the rarest model, making it very desirable for the collector. We're anticipating strong interest from America and our international bidding platform naturally makes it easier for overseas bidders to get in involved."

In 1965 Honda produced the next generation of its rev-for-ever little sports car, the S800. This particular car is a 1967 righthand drove model which underwent a full body off restoration between 2014 and 2017 and the engine was overhauled by a former Rolls-Royce engineer. Looks to be in a smart condition and comes from careful ownership. The Honda is being offered at £15,000 to £20,000.

In the British Marques auction is the 2000 Mini Cooper Sport owned by Jamiroquai frontman, Jay Kay. Affectionately known as “Chuckles”, this is no ordinary Mini. It comes with Chesterfield upholstery, red velvet roof lining and curtains, a disco light and to top it all off a “mini bar” in the boot! With just under 16,000 miles this Mini will certainly help you stand out from the crowd and is offered at no reserve.

And for something even more quirky a 1956 Bentley S1 Pickup. Originally purchased new as a Bentley S1 Saloon, the car was sold and went to Australia where it underwent conversion into a utility vehicle and painted Banana Yellow. The car returned to the UK in 2012 and has since formed part of the current vendor’s private collection. It is not the UK registered, but all taxes have been paid and what could be the poshest Ute is now offered at £25,000 to £30,000.

In the automobilia sale, there are 109 lots ranging from watches, pictures and even fuel pumps and traffic lights.

Following on with our famous, fun and quirky we have the multi-signed 60s helmet once owned by Roy Turner who had Andy Cap, the Daily Mirror comic strip, painted on it and then sought the autographs of John Surtees, Jackie Stewart, Mike Spence, Chris Amon, Bruce Mclaren, Tony Lanfranchi and Denny Hulme. Now for sale estimated at £800 to £1,200.

To celebrate a historical moment in hill climbing, a poster from Shelsley Walsh’s Classic Nostalgia in 2016, with autographs from the race and rally legends Hans Stuck, Mike Broad, Russell Brookes, Jimmy McRae, Neil Wilson, Ian Grindrod and motorsport journalist Nigel Roebuck. Estimated at £200 to £400.

For the classic car restorer or enthusiast is the Wolseley 12-48 front grille, complete and in sound condition with cap and badge wiring, but in need of restoration for £100 to £150.

And now for the fun, the ultimate accessory for any man cave, your own set of traffic lights complete with remote control. Fully functioning and with wall mounting brackets, could be yours for £400 to £600.

COMPLETELY RESTORED VINCENT BLACK SHADOW SERIES C TO GET PULSES RACING AT BRITISH MARQUES SALE

1951 Vincent Black Shadow Series C

A rare, valuable and stunning Vincent Black Shadow Series C is being offered for sale at Silverstone Auctions’ British Marques sale at Heythrop Park on the 11th May.

In superb condition and beautifully restored by Marque Guru, Andrew Kenningley of Southport using original parts, this is a legend of the motorcycle world.

The Heythrop Classic Car sale, which takes place earlier in the day, has a 2007 KTM 990 EFI Adventure offered from the classic car and bike collection of Jay Kay.

Making its public debut at the 1948 Earls Court Motorcycle Show, the Vincent Black Shadow went on to become a legend in its own lifetime, fuelling the demand among discerning collectors for fine examples of the marque, such as this one being offered in the Silverstone Auctions sale.

Amongst knowledgeable Vincent enthusiasts, the name of Andrew Kenningley from Southport is held in reverence. It was he who was responsible for the restoration of the 1949 Vincent Black Shadow Series 'C' that achieved the remarkable sum of £119,100 (inc. premium) at a major auction around 18 months ago.

Pleasingly Andrew was also responsible for, and indeed was the former keeper of, this 1951 Black Shadow we are privileged to be offering for sale.

The National Database of Classic Vehicles has confirmed that this Black Shadow dates from 1951. The Certificate of Authenticity from Vincent Motorcycles Ltd clarifies that frame number RC9055B has been fitted with a 1949 HRD 998cc engine, which is now to full Black Shadow specification and after speaking to Andrew he confirmed that it would be capable of 130mph if you are brave enough. In the period the Vincent Black Shadow was the fastest road bike, originally topping out at a remarkable 125mph.

There is also a Vincent Motorcycles 'repair order card' showing that the motorcycle was rebuilt to a 'show standard' using all original panels. 512 hours were logged on the restoration and the work was completed in 2016. Every aspect of this Vincent’s return to the top level has come under the scrutiny of Andrew and his brother and the results speak for themselves.

Our vendor purchased the completely restored motorcycle in 2016 and we believe it has remained in his lounge ever since. He starts it occasionally, but it has never been on the road. Restored to a show winning standard with zero miles since and with an estimate of £55,000 to £65,000, this is a 'Best-of-Breed' Black Shadow.

If you are after something more modern, a 2007 KTM 990 EFI Adventure is being offered in the Heythrop Sale from rock legend Jay Kay of Jamiroquai, a keen classic and supercar collector.

The bike has 1,000 miles from new and comes with a history file and a KTM service. Having been in Jay Kay’s collection for a few years, he is now offering the bike with no reserve.

FINE EUROPEAN CLASSICS OFFERED IN HEYTHROP AUCTION ON THE 11th MAY

1975 BMW 3.0 CSi (E9) Coupe

Stunning and rare European Classics are being offered at the Silverstone Auction on the 11th May at Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire.

A pair of superb BMW CSi, a trio of the mid-1960s and early 1970s Mercedes, a very rare early 2001 Porsche 911 GT2 Clubsport and a splendid 1998 Ferrari 550 Maranello are just some of the exotic that will be looking for new homes.

The first of the two BMWs is the 1975 3.0 CSi (E9) Coupe number 43 of 207 right-hand drive cars built during the final two years of production. The current vendor had the car restored by Classic Legends with a full mechanical overhaul and a bare metal respray in Turkish Blue and a retrimmed and restored interior. The final bill was a little over £22,000. This is now a superb example and very sensibly guided at £40,000 to £45,000 and may well turn out to be a wise investment.

Our second BMW 3.0 CSi is a left-hand drive version first registered in 1973 and delivered to a Berlin dealership. Later in its lifetime, it underwent a respray in its original colour, Atlantic Blue and some light restoration before it became part of a private collection until now where it is being offered for sale with just under 84,000km on the clock. A timeless classic estimated at £40,000 to £46,000.

The Mercedes of the 60s and 70s had such a classic appearance and the first of our trio is the 1964 220 SEb fixed head Coupe. The UK supplied a car in September 1964 and currently with its sixth owner, was subjected to a comprehensive restoration between 2009 and 2011 and resprayed in its original colour scheme of Burgundy with a contrasting black roof. The current vendor has owned the car since 2013 forming part of his small collection of classic cars and now offered at £27,000 to £30,000.

The second of our Mercedes is the 1965 600 SWB originally delivered new to Australia. It was first registered in the UK in 2008 to the first of its two UK registered keepers. This car has been meticulously maintained with over £30,000 of bills, impeccable maintenance records and a recent service from model specialist Wolfgang Wills of Germany. Believed to be 1 of only 273 right-hand drive cars produced, this is an exquisite car and offered by television actor and Mercedes enthusiast Gary Mavers at £75,000 to £85,000. This is fast becoming a collectable classic.

The third of our Mercedes is the 1971 280SE 3.5 V8 Coupe presented in Silver with Black leather interior, formerly owned by television actor and Mercedes enthusiast Gary Mavers who carried out some restoration work. Further work was carried out in 2017 with the car now in excellent condition and just over 46,500 miles this is a discreet and powerful coupe estimated at £60,000 to £70,000.

In 2001 Porsche launched their most extreme version of the 911 (996), the GT2, with only 129 coming to the UK and of those just 17 were Clubsports. This is one super rare 2001 car aimed for both the racetrack and for the road. It comes with an impressive history file detailing all the options chosen for the car and its previous owners. The car has completed just 1,000 miles in the last three years with a total of 56,738 miles during its lifetime. This car is so special and now offered by the current vendor from his private collection of special cars at £90,000 to £110,00.

Of the Ferraris offered in the sale, this 1998 550 Maranello is a fine example of a V12 European Grand Tourer. Supplied new to a director of Newcastle United Football Club in August 1998, this car has clearly been well cared for over the years, as it comes with a complete service record and wealth of invoices from main agents and marque specialists. This is a lovely example of the last of these hand-built Ferraris and offered at £90,000 to £100,000 an opportunity not to be missed.

SILVERSTONE AUCTIONS HEADS TO HEYTHROP FOR TWO DAY MAY SALE

Silverstone Auctions will be holding their two day May sale at Heythrop Park on the 10thand 11th May, supported by the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club, with fine cars and memorabilia being offered for sale.

Saturday’s Classic Car sale will offer 50 cars including a 1972 Ferrari Daytona Spyder and a 1998 Porsche 911 (930) Turbo Targa G50 being offered. Sunday will be the British Marques sale and currently consigned is a superb 1960 AC Aceca and a 1954 Jaguar XK120 DHC.

The 1972 Ferrari Daytona Spyder Conversion is an absolutely breathtaking car. It was originally supplied by Maranello Concessionaires in March 1972 and has travelled just 8,700 miles. The car was professionally converted in 1978 to Spyder form by Richard Straman Coachworks in California. Presented in Blue Dino Metallizzato paint colour, this car has been meticulously maintained as is estimated at £500,000 to £575,000.

Also offered is this rather fine looking 1988 Porsche 911, one of the very last 930 Turbos with the G50 5 speed manual gearbox. This is a very desirable car with 71,725 miles, a substantial service record and also included in the sale is the Targa removal roof panel. This car is in remarkable condition and is a collectable classic estimated at £75,000 to £85,000.

Sunday’s sale of British marques is supported by the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club so naturally there will be a few Jaguars on offer amongst other classic British marques.

One of the star lots is this fabulous 1960 AC Aceca which has been consigned to the sale. This is one of the very best, having undergone restoration by the previous owner with the intention of making it the best in the world. Now offered for sale by the current owner of seven years and for the first time on the open market, this sleek fastback comes with a comprehensive history file on its restoration. According to the AC Aceca register this car was originally ordered in Mist Green, one of only six ever finished in that colour with the original six cylinder AC unit. This car has had so much love to make and keep it in the condition it is presented in, it seems to tick all the boxes and is available for £110,000 to £130,000.

One of several Jaguars include in the sale is this superb example of the XK120, a UK supplied car in right hand drive presented in British Racing Green and in excellent condition with a Jaguar Heritage Certificate. This car was first registered in January 1954 and supplied new to Squadron Leader Desmond de Villiers of Hertford. ‘Dizzy' de Villiers AFC was the Chief Test Pilot at the De Havilland Aircraft Company.

The car has undergone a nut and bolt restoration with the engine being fully rebuilt along with the axle and gearbox over a 30 year period using specialist restorers. The car underwent further work in 2008 with supporting documents including updates to improve driveability and reliability. A very desirable car to own and on offer for £75,000 to £85,000.

Silverstone Auctions with JEC at Heythrop

Silverstone Auctions will be holding their British Marques Sale at the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club flagship event, as their partner of the Jaguar Festival over the weekend 10th to 12thMay.

A general classic car sale will take place on the Friday with the British Marques sale taking place on the Saturday at Heythrop Park. Over 100 cars are expected across the two-day sale with viewing for both sale days on Friday the 10th.

The Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club will be holding a Gala Dinner on the Saturday evening after the sale which will round off events at Heythrop, before moving to Blenheim Palace on the Sunday for further celebrations, a concours, parades and entertainment.

RM Sotheby’s is delighted to announce the consignment of several legendary road-ready rally cars for its first-ever Essen, Germany sale, due to take place over two days (11-12 April) during the Techno-Classica Essen Show. Over 200 unique automobile lots will be offered in Essen, within which a collection of celebrated road-going Lancia models includes a Delta S4 Stradale, 037 Stradale, and Stratos HF Stradale, to represent a golden age of rally sport.

The 1985 Lancia Delta S4 Stradale is among the highly desirable featured cars set for Essen. Manufactured as a Group B rally car, the Delta S4 was made by Lancia with the intention of replacing the outgoing 037, raced by Lancia in the early 1980s. The Delta S4 lived up to the reputation of its predecessor with a number of Group B wins, while the rally class homologation requirements led Lancia to build 200 road-going versions of the car, paving the way for the Stradale version, literally translated from Italian as ‘road-going’. The Delta S4 on offer in Essen is a highly original example of the legendary Italian rally car, showing less than 2,200 km from new and complete with original owner’s manuals and toolkit (Est. €450.000 - €550.000).

The Lancia rally legend theme continues with a truly exceptional 1975 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale, one of only 492 produced as a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive race and rally car. Lancia dominated the World Rally Championship with the futuristic looking Stratos HF Stradale, finishing every season in the first place from 1974 to 1976, and winning subsequent races until the car was retired in the early-1980s. Presented in unrestored, original condition, it was originally delivered to Guido Bignardi in Sicily. A member of a prominent Italian rallying family, the car remained with him for three decades before passing through just one more owner ahead of the consignor (Est. €480.000 - €520.000). Also set for the sale is a 1984 Lancia 037 Stradale, another stunning and purposeful rally legend built to comply with homologation standards of ‘80s rally sport. Also delivered new to a member of the Bignardi family, the 037 was kept by its first owner until 2005 before being purchased by its third and current owner in 2015. Presented in exceptionally well-preserved condition and showing just 3,500 km from new, this is surely one of the lowest mileage examples available (Est. €350.000 - €400.000). A 1974 Lancia Fulvia (Est. €20.000 - €30.000) and 1970 Lancia Fulvia Rallye 1.6 HF ‘Fanalone’ (Est. €60.000 - €70.000) complete the Lancia motorsport line-up.

Rounding off the rally theme is another iconic car of the 1980s, a 1985 Renault 5 Turbo 2 offered from the Youngtimer Collection in Essen. As a perfect introduction to rallying’s 1980s heyday, the Renault 5 Turbo was born of Renault’s desire to emulate the winning recipe of the Stratos, and in so doing gave the humble Renault 5 a new lease on life by moving its engine to behind the driver and switching to rear-wheel drive. This example was first registered in Germany but has gone on to owners in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland (Est: €80.000 - €90.000). The Renault is featured amongst 85 cars presented from the single-owner Youngtimer Collection at Essen.
