SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT BARONS’ SPRING CLASSIC SALE

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT BARONS’ SPRING CLASSIC SALE
Following a strong start to 2019 with its Classic Winter Warmer sale in February, Barons is now presenting a really diverse and interesting line-up of cars for its Spring Classic sale at Sandown Park on April 30.
Notable entries include the 1983 Mercedes-Benz 280SLK with just 25,000 warranted miles on the clock. This immaculate car was bought new by actress Sheila Hancock. In 1984 it was purchased by the vendor’s aunt, who has kept the car in a heated garage ever since, taking it out only to drive to the local Mercedes dealership for its annual service and for a very occasional trip to the shops. The estimate for this beautifully-presented bright red convertible is £28,000-£33,000.
The 1967 Fiat 500 Radbourne Racing Abarth is perfect for historic motorsport. The official UK Abarth importer Radbourne Racing of Wimbledon converted RHD Fiat 500s using genuine Abarth parts. The engine of the standard Fiat 500 was bored to give 689cc and 38hp, wheel arches were widened and Borrani steel wheels fitted. This potent, nimble little machine is a huge amount of fun and has competed at Prescott Hilliclimb and in the Crystal Palace Sprint. Guide price: £15,000-£18,000.
The 1971 MG B roadster in the sale has covered just 13,900 miles in 48 years and comes complete with almost all MOTs since 1975 and a meticulous service history. It is particularly rare as it has an automatic transmission. Guide price: £17,000-£22,000.
The remarkably original 1967 MG 1100 is another low-miler, having clocked up just 27,500 warranted miles. One of only 149 examples shown by the DVLA as still on the road, it is offered complete with a newspaper article dated March 1994 stating the mileage then as 21,000. This lovely little car would make the perfect museum exhibit or much-treasured classic. Guide price: £6,000-£8,500.
The 1973 XJ Series 2 pre-production coupĂ©, chassis number 2, was built as a left-hand drive machine but converted by the Browns Lane factory to RHD and registered by them in 1974, after which it was used by Jaguar’s then Chief Engineer Jim Randle as his company car. The XJ was subsequently owned by Thoroughbred and Classic Cars and featured many times in that publication during the 1980s, when it was the company car of the journalist Roger Bell. It was recently found languishing in a garden and needs full restoration. It is offered at no reserve.
The 1961 Austin Seven Mini Mk 1 was rescued from a dry barn last year and has undergone a sympathetic restoration, keeping as much of the original as possible. It appears to have had only two owners in nearly 60 years and still bears its original number plates. Guide price: £9,000-£12,000.
In the market for a ‘modern classic’ such as a 2004 Aston Martin DB7 Vantage, 2003 Maserati Spyder 4.2 Cambio Corsa or 2005 Porsche 996? You’re in luck - Barons has plenty to choose from, with a good sprinkling of BMWs and Mercedes thrown in for good measure. One particularly unusual modern entry is the 2009 Land Rover Defender 90 SVX Soft Top Thor GTS Super Sport by Brittle. The SVX Defender were special models produced to celebrate Land Rover’s 60th anniversary in 2008. The vehicle on offer at Barons on April 30 was upgraded by Brittle Bespoke Defenders with upgrades including Brittle Diamond leather interior with Recaro heated seats, 18" spoke alloys, performance brake kit with upgraded callipers, lower suspension kit with Koni shock absorbers, stainless steel sport exhaust, and mohair hood. It has covered just 10,500 miles in ten years and has a guide price of £22,000-£25,000.

RALLY LEGENDS FOR ROAD AND TRACK DRIFT INTO RM SOTHEBY’S INAUGURAL ESSEN AUCTION

RALLY LEGENDS FOR ROAD AND TRACK
DRIFT INTO RM SOTHEBY’S INAUGURAL ESSEN AUCTION
  • RM Sotheby’s reveals a selection of road-ready rally car greats for sale at Essen, Germany auction, 11-12 April
  • A varied selection of Lancia entries includes Delta S4 Stradale, 037 Stradale and Stratos HF Stradale, representing a golden age of rally sport
  • Over 200 diverse automobiles consigned for Essen sale, with more detail at rmsothebys.com

RM Sotheby’s is delighted to announce the consignment of several legendary road-ready rally cars for its first-ever Essen, Germany sale, due to take place over two days (11-12 April) during the Techno-Classica Essen Show. Over 200 unique automobile lots will be offered in Essen, within which a collection of celebrated road-going Lancia models includes a Delta S4 Stradale, 037 Stradale, and Stratos HF Stradale, to represent a golden age of rally sport.
The 1985 Lancia Delta S4 Stradale is among the highly desirable featured cars set for Essen. Manufactured as a Group B rally car, the Delta S4 was made by Lancia with the intention of replacing the outgoing 037, raced by Lancia in the early 1980s. The Delta S4 lived up to the reputation of its predecessor with a number of Group B wins, while the rally class homologation requirements led Lancia to build 200 road-going versions of the car, paving the way for the Stradale version, literally translated from Italian as ‘road-going’. The Delta S4 on offer in Essen is a highly original example of the legendary Italian rally car, showing less than 2,200 km from new and complete with original owner’s manuals and toolkit (Est. €450.000 - €550.000).

The Lancia rally legend theme continues with a truly exceptional 1975 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale, one of only 492 produced as a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive race and rally car. Lancia dominated the World Rally Championship with the futuristic looking Stratos HF Stradale, finishing every season in the first place from 1974 to 1976, and winning subsequent races until the car was retired in the early-1980s. Presented in unrestored, original condition, it was originally delivered to Guido Bignardi in Sicily. A member of a prominent Italian rallying family, the car remained with him for three decades before passing through just one more owner ahead of the consignor (Est. €480.000 - €520.000). Also set for the sale is a 1984 Lancia 037 Stradale, another stunning and purposeful rally legend built to comply with homologation standards of ‘80s rally sport. Also delivered new to a member of the Bignardi family, the 037 was kept by its first owner until 2005 before being purchased by its third and current owner in 2015. Presented in exceptionally well-preserved condition and showing just 3,500 km from new, this is surely one of the lowest mileage examples available (Est. €350.000 - €400.000). A 1974 Lancia Fulvia (Est. €20.000 - €30.000) and 1970 Lancia Fulvia Rallye 1.6 HF ‘Fanalone’ (Est. €60.000 - €70.000) complete the Lancia motorsport line-up.

Maarten ten Holder, Head of Europe & Chief Auctioneer for RM Sotheby’s, comments: “These road-going Lancia rally cars have become iconic within the collector car community. The Essen sale is a great opportunity for an enthusiast or collector to acquire a part of motorsport history, and these cars are not commonplace within the market. Each car is offered in fantastic condition and buyers can look forward to enjoying the incredible driving experience they offer. The Essen sale has been curated with a diverse selection of cars on offer, many of which are highly sought-after within the German market, and we are looking forward to our first ever sale on German soil.”
Rounding off the rally theme is another iconic car of the 1980s, a 1985 Renault 5 Turbo 2 offered from the Youngtimer Collection in Essen. As a perfect introduction to rallying’s 1980s heyday, the Renault 5 Turbo was born of Renault’s desire to emulate the winning recipe of the Stratos, and in so doing gave the humble Renault 5 a new lease on life by moving its engine to behind the driver and switching to rear-wheel drive. This example was first registered in Germany but has gone on to owners in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland (Est: €80.000 - €90.000). The Renault is featured amongst 85 cars presented from the single-owner Youngtimer Collection at Essen.
The addition of the Essen sale to RM Sotheby’s established Paris, Monaco, Villa Erba, and London events address a sustained level of interest in high-value automobile sales in Europe – also contributing towards a growing presence for RM Sotheby’s among car collectors in the region. The collector car market in Germany is recognized by RM Sotheby’s as especially strong.

‘TIME-WARP’ PEUGEOT GETS BIDDERS BATTLING AND BARONS LINES UP A PRE-PRODUCTION JAGUAR FOR APRIL

‘TIME-WARP’ PEUGEOT GETS BIDDERS BATTLING AND BARONS LINES UP A PRE-PRODUCTION JAGUAR FOR APRIL

Barons’ 2019 sale calendar got off to a strong start with a 70% sale rate achieved at its Classic Winter Warmer Sale at Sandown Park on February 26. 48 of 69 cars on offer found new homes and bidding was brisk, not least for the ‘time-warp’ Peugeot 309 GTi. With just 131 warranted miles on the clock, this absolutely original, showroom-condition, one-owner machine was hotly fought-over before the hammer fell to the successful bidder, with the ‘Pug’ achieving well over top estimate at £14,520 - or £110 for each mile the car has covered in its lifetime.
Tim Gascoigne, Barons’ Auction Manager, was delighted with the day: "We're very happy with how the first sale of 2019 went. We sold 70% of the cars on offer, which is a great result in the current market. The £14,520 achieved for the Peugeot 309 GTi must be a record price for the model, and there were lots of other strong results, including £30,360 for the 1951 Jaguar Mk V, £18,260 for the Ginetta G33N, and £20,130 for the 1964 Morris Mini Cooper."
Rare ‘garden find’ pre-production Jaguar for April
Barons is now inviting entries for its Spring Classic Sale, taking place at Sandown Park on April 30. Early entries include a fantastic restoration project for a Jaguar enthusiast.
The XJ was subsequently owned by Thoroughbred and Classic Cars and featured many times in that publication during the 1980s. It was recently found languishing in a garden and is in need of full restoration. It will be offered at no reserve.
