SILVERSTONE AUCTIONS GEARING UP FOR A STAR-STUDDED AUCTION AT THE NEC THIS WEEKEND

Silverstone Auctions will be opening the doors to 118 classic and modern classic lots at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show from the 8th to 10th November at the NEC Birmingham.

Viewing will take place all day Friday and on the mornings of the sale on Saturday and Sunday where you can view the lots and speak with the Silverstone Auctions team.

On Saturday the car auction gets underway at 2:00pm with 62 lots set to go under the hammer. The first lot off the block will be the 1991 Golf GTi Rivage Cabriolet with all proceeds being donated to the Motor Neurone Disease Association, a charity close to the heart of the vendor and it will be offered at No Reserve. Lot 205 is the first of the star lots, the Ex-Sir Cliff Richard Corvette C2 Sting Ray Convertible, which was delivered new to the pop legend early in his career and is estimated at £50,000 to £60,000. Lot 207 is a wonderful lot to keep an eye on too, a rare 1976 Alfa Romeo Montreal. A UK -supplied right-hand drive car, one of only 155, with a warranted 45,495 miles in need of some attention. It is estimated at £22,000 to £26,000 and the registration number 600 JRL will remain with the car. Lot 215 is the first of the supercars a 1993 Jaguar XJ220 formerly owned from new by Sir John Madjeski the founder of Auto Trader. Estimated at £350,000 to £400,000 this 2,000 mile from new supercar is a very special example and looked after by XJ220 experts Don Law. The following lot 216 is a 1989 Porsche 928 GT Manual which is being sold as part of a feature for a new Channel 4 restoration show. This car has been recommissioned and inspected prior to the sale and estimated at £20,000 to £25,000. Lot 250 is another of the incredible lots being offered during the show weekend, the 1974 MGB GT V8 with just 4,425 miles on the clock. A very British rare chrome bumpered sportscar at an estimate of £30,000 to £35,000, what a great car.

Sunday’s auction has 56 lots and in amongst them are more cars with famous ownership. Four lots in will be the 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Coupe formerly owned by pop sensation Lulu, who bought the car new when she was married to Maurice Gibb of the BeeGees. This Mercedes has been with the current vendor forming part of a significant collection where it has been enjoyed and used for social events. It is being offered with an estimate of £65,000 to £75,000. The star lot of the day has to be Lot 411 the 1955 Triumph TR2 ex-works Le Mans 24 hours team car. Purchased straight after the race by King Hussein of Jordan and has since been with the current owner for the last 47 years. Estimated at £100,000 to £140,000 this is a wonderful piece of British motorsport history with superb provenance and well-documented history.

Across both sale days, the selection and provenance of the cars are quite staggering. There is a wide selection of Aston Martins from different eras and models, the most famous being the DB5s of which there are two outstanding cars, there is also a rare and desirable DB2 Washboard, two DB6s, a beautiful 1968 DBS, a 1984 V8 Vantage Volante and the 1994 Widebodied Virage Volante. If you are an Aston enthusiast, then there will certainly be a car for you.

The star-studded line up continues, not content with cars formerly owned by Sir Cliff Richard and Lulu, but there are two cars from the famous and eclectic collection of Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay, Lot 237 a 1983 Mercedes-Benz 280 TE Estate and Lot 245 a Porsche 928 GTS. If you fancy something a bit more rugged, you can bid for Lot 259 a 1994 Range Rover Limousine once used to ferry around boxing champion Mike Tyson.

Among the 118 lots are several future classics, one model that has shown great form in recent auctions is the BMW 325i and there are three in the sale. Two of them are 1991 E30 cars a Sport and a Sport M-Tech2, the other a 1986 E30 Sport M-Tech1. Fast Fords are always popular and there is plenty of choice with some outstanding examples being offered such as the 33,984 miles 1983 Escort RS1600i from the BonkeRS Collection. If you after a French hot hatch Lot 403, a 1989 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6 is in exceptional condition and estimated at £15,000 to £18,000 with just 27,815 miles from new.

Silverstone Auctions are proud to be offering a Corvette Stingray formerly owned by the British pop legend Sir Cliff Richard in its forthcoming sale at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Car Show on the 9th and 10th November.

Keeping him in good company is another pop sensation’s car to shout about. Owned from new by Lulu a gorgeous Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.8 Coupe.

This stunning 1963 Corvette Stingray was bought new by Sir Cliff Richard in March 1963, at the time he was dominating the British pop scene. He also had a fondness for American cars as he described on Top Gear in 2010 mentioning this Corvette as possibly the fourth car he owned.

In 1965 he sold the car and by 2012 our vendor purchased it from Corvette specialists, Claremont Corvette. Coming with the car is a history file detailing the work carried out including more recent work, a full respray and the worn vinyl seats replaced with leather. The logbooks with the name Harry Rodger Webb and his signature at the time are included plus some photographs of Sir Cliff in the car.

Further period images of Sir Cliff Richard in the Corvette are available and were taken by the notable David Steen, a much-respected photographer of film and pop stars plus many other high profile people of the time. He recalls Sir Cliff Richard driving this car from gig to gig. These images are available via Camerapress.

With 69,000 miles on the clock this Corvette Stingray does have the original Delco radio, just imagine that, the radio that Sir Cliff Richard listened to as he probably sang and created his next hit single.

If this Corvette Stingray could talk, just imagine the stories it could tell, the history it holds, the sixties legends that have sat in this car with their arm resting on the door as they cruised from gig to gig with the roof down. Estimated at £50,000 to £60,000 need we say more!

Well yes we do, as we also have the 1971 Mercedes-Benz formerly owned from new by Lulu who had taken the pop world by storm in the mid-sixties with her hit single Shout which was followed by many others as well as representing the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest and singing the title track to James Bond film, The Man With The Golden Gun.

Lulu owned this Mercedes for three years when it was sold to an Arabian businessman and then to a Mercedes enthusiast who owned it for thirty-eight years before the current vendor purchased it in 2018.

It has been maintained to an excellent standard and lightly used in the last few years. In common with Sir Cliff Richard’s Corvette, it too has the original Becker Mexico radio cassette player installed which Lulu would have listened too as she travelled the country.

This Mercedes has been part of a significant car collection and has been enjoyed and cared for by the current owner, estimated at £65,000 to £75,000 this a great car to shout about.

AN OUTSTANDING SALE FOR SILVERSTONE AUCTIONS AS MERCEDES-BENZ GULLWINGS SOAR

The Silverstone Classic sale which took place at the historic race meeting last weekend saw a packed auction room which achieved an excellent sale rate of 74% (excluding competition cars) with £6.4 million worth of sales overall.

The big story of the sale was the 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing and the 2010 SLS AMG, a new home found for the collection of cars owned by the late Barrie Whizzo Williams and all the cars from the Gentlemans’ Collection selling well with some stand out achievements.

The Mercedes-Benz Gullwing which had attracted lots of interest in the lead up to the sale achieved £832,500. The new vendor was so delighted that he also bid on and successfully purchased the 2010 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG for £203,625, therefore having both the earliest and latest of gullwing doored cars.

No place was more appropriate than Silverstone to be selling the collection of cars and kart of the late Barrie Williams. Whizzo who was loved by many in motorsport and would be delighted that his Fastkart, trailer and moped, Lancia Fulvia and Mini Cooper S all found new homes. The Mini sold for £65,250, the Fastakart £3,600 and the Lancia £39,375.

The second collection that was on offer, A Gentlemans’ Collection of No Reserve, attracted lots of interest with all cars selling very well. Several cars achieved more than their estimate, the Ferrari Testarossa stood out achieving £99,000, the 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo sold for £70,874 and the rare Lancia Delta HF Integrale Bianco Perlato selling for £65,563.

The automobilia sale held in the morning attracted lots of interest too, with an array of items for collectors and enthusiasts with something to suit everyone on all budgets. One of the stand-out lots was Lot 120, the McLaren 3- piece luggage set from the McLaren F1 road car chassis No 33 which sold for seven times its estimate at £7,200.

Another of the lots a set of traffic lights in full working order and with remote control sold for £750. This type of item is always very popular and an excellent item for set dressing.

Day two of the auction also proved to be a great day of sales with an early lot, the 1978 VW Beetle, one of the last off the German production line and only 81 miles selling for £39,938. Following not long after, the 1958 Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk3 topped out at £164,250 and then for something little more current a 1995 Ford Escort Cosworth Motorsport, one of the very few genuine factory-built cars fetching an incredible £68,063.

One of the highlight lots of Sundays’ sale was the Aston Martin DBS V8 press car offered directly from the actor and comedian Steve Coogan which was presented in beautiful condition and sold for £151,875.

The following lot, No 422 the 1988 Rouse Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth Group A, a legendary competition car and one of the most successful in touring car racing sold for £170,000.

A 1991 Porsche 928 GT in manual which is in superb condition sold for £67,500 with the following lot the 2018 Ferrari California T 70th Anniversary Edition attracted lots of interest and bidding, selling for £270,000.

The weekend’s sale saw two Acecas being offered with the 1958 Bristol engined version selling on the Saturday for £101,250 and the 1960 Aceca sold on the Sunday for £135,000.

As with Saturdays automobilia sale, there were plenty of lots available to suit everyone with the 1950s Beckmeter M50 petrol pump which had just recently been restored sold for £3,240. Luggage sets are popular additions for classic car owners and Lot 357 the Testarossa 6-piece Schedoni luggage set sold for £5,400. In total automobilia achieved a total sale rate of 75%.

Harry Whale summed up the weekend: “With an overall sale rate of 67% generating £6.4 million and classic cars alone achieving 74%, we are delighted with the weekend and to set industry-leading results in the current market conditions.”

A SUCCESSFUL AUCTION FOR CCA AT THE WARWICKSHIRE EVENT CENTRE

Classic Car Auctions had a very successful sales day at The Warwickshire Event Centre at the weekend achieving a rate of 74% and with some notable bidding wars with cars selling for high above their estimate and contributing to £1.5 million in total sales.

Rowan Atkinson’s Mercedes 500E, which he was offering at No Reserve and had a lot of interest leading up to the sale and on the day, achieved £19,758. Other celebrity cars which also did well was the Alfa Romeo of Stones Roses band member, John Squires. This car also had lots of interest both before and on sale day and achieved £32,745. Harry Metcalfe’s two cars, the rare Lancia Kappa and the Mercedes 600 SL also received lots of interest, selling for £3,996 and £11,322 respectively.

Jaguars did very well, with 21 offered and 19 of them selling, leaving two unsold, which was tremendous. Lot 318, the 1991 XJS imported from Japan with 15,300 miles, sold very well at £22,755. The lovely 1969 Jaguar E-Type Series 2 2+2 Coupe also saw a lot of bidding between the phone and a bidder in the room who eventually secured the car for £45,510.

Quite a few of the lots also generated some fantastic bidding wars and as a result sold for way over their estimates. Lot 340, the 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet generated interest both in the UK and Europe with online and phone bidding selling for £38,622. The next round of furious bidding followed soon after with Lot 347, the 1967 Triumph TR4A which sold on the phone for £34,410.

Lot 372, the 1974 Jensen Interceptor MkIII which had been in store for the last 40 years and with only 38,000 miles on the clock received a wonderful round of bidding and eventually sold way over its estimate for £39,405. The super rare 1971 Ford Capri 2000 GT XLR V4 which was estimated at £15,000 to £18,000 sold very well at £22,775.

As we approached the last lots, a No Reserve Mercedes S55 AMG in long wheelbase mode generated some fantastic bidding ably commentated on by the auctioneer. Bidding took place between London, Moreton-in- Marsh and Rugby, with London eventually winning the bidding at £9,324.

Gary Dunne commented: “We had a very successful day at the Warwickshire Event Centre and I am very happy with the rate of sales we achieved, in what is a slightly unknown market in these current times.”

“We had some really superb cars, all of which have gone to new homes after great rounds of bidding on the phones, online and in the room.”

“It was great to see the venue packed out with a jovial atmosphere, with three out of four cars being sold and one bidder jumping for joy after securing his bid, was just wonderful to see.”

As the closing date passed, Classic Car Auctions are delighted to announce a full house of cars, with 151 lots going under the hammer at the Warwickshire Event Centre on the 25th May.

Among the superb lots, which include a number of celebrity cars from Rowan Atkinson’s Mercedes 500 E, to a lovely 1969 Alfa Romeo Duetto Boat-Tail Spider, once owned by John Squires of the Stone Roses. He was the first owner who imported the car and since arriving in the UK in 2001, it was then restored to a very high standard, with a comprehensive history file of the work undertaken and invoices to John Squires. Now finished in period grey with a burgundy leather interior it is being offered for an estimated £26,000 to £30,000.

Gary Dunne, Classic Car Auctions sales manager commented: “We are absolutely delighted that Rowan Atkinson CBE has chosen Classic Car Auctions to sell his Mercedes. We are often asked to sell cars on behalf or directly for well-known individuals. This is a special car for him and offered at No Reserve. It has created a lot of interest, as all of his cars usually do.”

“We also have a couple of other cars with interesting celebrity connections such as the lovely Alfa and also two cars from Harry Metcalfe of Harry’s Garage.”

If you are after a two-seater for the summer and maybe something a bit more modern, a 1999 BMW Z3M Roadster is being offered in a stunning colour combination of Estoril Blue with a blue and silver Nappa interior. With just one owner from new and only 6,000 miles on the clock and 15 miles travelled since its last major service, this car is one for the discerning collector. Estimated at £28,000 to £32,000.

A really wonderful classic is this 1964 Mercedes 230 SL ‘Pagoda’, which has been in family ownership for the last 43 years and dry stored from 1976 to 2004. Presented in light red with a black Pagoda hard top, this car has been maintained rather than restored, with around £22,000 spent in recent years. The current vendor who is a member of the same family and has used the car since is now offering it for sale estimated at £38,000 to £44,000.

And for a true classic, a 1971 Porsche 911 T. Imported from Orlando, Florida in 2016 with an indicated 17,700 miles. This car has been fully restored over the last three years, repainted in Sepia Brown and has been fitted with the larger capacity 2.7-litre engine. It has a full UK history, but nothing from its time in the USA, making this car great value at £50,000 to £60,000.

Gary Dunne commented further: “This 1970s Porsche 911T is the car of my childhood and great looking Porsche. Alongside the BMW Z3M, we also have a pair of BMW M3s, one each from a different decade.”

“With 151 cars consigned and a valuation of around £2,000,000, we are looking forward to a great auction with full restoration projects to genuine and original examples being offered at the Warwickshire Event Centre on the 25th May.”

1954 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing

Silverstone Auctions are delighted to present their headline lot, the 1954 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, for their Silverstone Classic sale on the 27th and 28th July 2019.

The 300SL Gullwing is an iconic Mercedes-Benz coupe that was first produced in 1954. Only 1,400 cars were ever made and early cars such as this one, are particularly desirable. In 1999 the 300SL Gullwing was voted "Sports car of the century".

Nick Whale, Managing Director of Silverstone Auctions commented: “We are privileged to offer this car fresh to market from the same private ownership as the 300SL Roadster that we sold at the Silverstone Classic in 2018.”

“This car comes with an impressive history file and with a unique first UK owner being the late Peter Warr, who was the team manager for the Lotus Formula 1 team.”

“He imported the car from Arizona in 1989 and subsequently enjoyed the car until it was purchased by our vendor in August 1993.”

“What is really special about this Gullwing is its an early car and features the highly desirable full 'belly pans'.”

When supplied new on 27th December 1954 to Hoffman of New York, the car was originally finished in Mercedes racing silver. It is now presented in Fire Engine Red as it was when Peter Warr imported the car in 1989.

It has also been fitted with a sports camshaft upgrade and, more recently, electronic power steering which can be removed if required.

The comprehensive history file shows the thorough and diligent maintenance of the car by well-known 300SL Specialists, including John Surtees Engineering, marque expert Ron Waghorn, marque expert Tommy Johnston and more latterly Neil Corns of Omega Motorsport. The plethora of parts invoices are from Keinle, HK Engineering and Classic Mercedes UK but, most important of all, the injection pump was completely overhauled and rebuilt by HK Engineering in Germany just 2 years ago. Both the gearbox and brakes have also been recently overhauled, including both the brake drums and master cylinders

The car has benefitted from regular use and has been on many European motor tours to exotic places such as Spain, Portugal, Italy, France and Monaco, as well as competing on the Ecurie Ecosse Scottish Tours no less than 12 times!

ROWAN ATKINSON OFFERS HIS MERCEDES 500 E AS STAR LOT AT CCA’S MAY SALE

The next Classic Car Auctions (CCA) sale on the 25th May at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre is set to have a number of star lots, including a 1991 Mercedes 500 E owned twice by Rowan Atkinson.

Leading the sale is the 1991 Mercedes 500 E currently owned and offered by Rowan Atkinson CBE. A known car enthusiast and historic racer, Rowan likes to enjoy his cars rather than tuck them away. His most prized car, which was recently sold, the Mclaren F1, is well documented.

The Mercedes 500E he is offering is extremely unusual in that Rowan has owned it not once, but twice.

He bought the car new in 1991 and owned it for four years before selling it on to its second owner, who then owned the car for the next 23 years. Rowan then repurchased the car in July 2017 as he had enjoyed it so much and now offers it for sale again.

1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SC Coupé, Estimate: £400,000-500,000.

A collection of ‘Turkish delights’ will be offered at the Bonhams Goodwood Members’ Meeting Sale on Sunday 7 April, in the form of 24 rare restored historic motor cars, offered directly from Turkey’s Key Museum, led by a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SC Coupé, with an estimate of £400,000-500,000. 

The 300SC will be joined in the Bonhams Goodwood selection by an exceptional 1962 Aston Martin DB4 ‘Series IV’ Sports Saloon (£250,000-300,000) and a 1947 Delahaye Type 135M Cabriolet (£220,000-280,000), both fully restored by the Key museum’s in-house team of 12 mechanics.

With its Sindelfingen coachwork and hand-finished tan leather interior, the 300SC is one of only 200 examples models built of the model which is widely considered among discerning collectors as the most desirable of all Mercedes-Benz’s post-war luxury cars.

The 300S was the marque’s flagship model throughout the 1950s, as it was lighter and faster and still more comfortable than its predecessor. The SC model was further enhanced with a Bosch-fuel injected 175bhp dry-sump engine to further increase its power and performance, achieving a top speed of 112mph and acceleration of 0-62mph (100kph) of around 13 seconds. 

This particular ultra-rare 300SC was restored in Europe in the 1990s and acquired by the Key museum in 2009 at a US auction. 

1962 Aston Martin DB4 ‘Series IV’ Sports Saloon, Estimate: £250,000-300,000.

The Key Museum is a surprising, 7000m² motoring haven in rural Turkey, situated one hour from Izmir. Founded by two brothers, Murat and Selim Özgörkey, the museum tells a global story of motoring history, and since 2001 its extensive assortment of vehicles has been sourced with meticulous diligence from all corners of the world. 

A change in the museum’s direction has led this world class institution to restructure its collection and so an eclectic selection of 24 cars will now feature prominently at the Bonhams Goodwood Members’ Meeting Sale.

Bonhams Head of Motoring UK, Tim Schofield, commented: “The quality of motor cars sourced by the Key Museum, in a relatively short amount of time, is exceptional, and we are very proud to be including in our sale some of the very best models of their collection. The 24 vehicles headed to Bonhams mirror the quality and diversity found in the Museum itself, with electric, steam and petrol engines all featured.”

•  1958 Fiat-Abarth 750 GT ‘Double Bubble’ Coupé, with coachwork by Carrozzeria Zagato, estimate £90,000-120,000.
•  1951 Jaguar Mark V 3½-litre Drophead Coupé, restored by the museum, estimate £80,000-100,000.
•  1960 Facel Vega HK500 Coupé, restored by the museum, estimate £90,000-120,000.
•  1948 Chrysler New Yorker ‘Town & Country’ Convertible, estimate £100,000-130,000.
•  1932 Auburn 8-100A Cabriolet, estimate £80,000-100,000.

The Bonhams Goodwood Members’ Meeting Sale will feature a world-class range of historic motor cars including a 1964 Aston Martin DB5 Sports Saloon (£580,000-660,000), a 1968 Aston Martin DB6 Volante (£480,000-580,000), a 1967 Maserati 3.7-Litre Mistral Spyder (£350,000-450,000) and a 1974 Ferrari 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer, delivered new to Sir Elton John (£250,000-300,000).
