The Thursday auction session was led by the sale of a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A offered from a Private Swiss Collection, which achieved €2.255.000 to fall squarely within its pre-sale estimate. Featuring outstandingly handsome coachwork by Sindelfingen, the supercharged 540 K was presented in Essen having undergone a high-quality restoration and retaining its original chassis, engine, gearbox and bodywork. Additional highlights from the well-attended Thursday auction include several iconic German collectables: a European-delivery 1959 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster, complete with its original factory hardtop and a set of matching fitted luggage, achieved a final €893.750, while a 1996 Porsche RUF Turbo R in attractive Signal Green paintwork reached a final €230.000. A factory left-hand-drive 1963 Aston Martin DB4 Series IValso sold well at a final €387.500. Modern collectables offered from the Youngtimer Collection also saw more strong interest today in Essen, with a highly desirable 1990 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC AMG 6.0 ‘Wide-Body’ surpassing its pre-sale estimate to bring a final €149,500. Increasingly popular with collectors, the 1992 Land Rover Range Rover with only 24,000 on the clock, doubled its low estimate bringing €40,250. Continuing the trend witnessed in Amelia Island and Fort Lauderdale, a highly original 1992 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo from the Youngtimer Collection sold for a final €32,200 to eclipse its high estimate.  The 540 K led the Thursday session of RM Sotheby’s inaugural Essen auction. RM Sotheby’s is delighted to announce the addition of two important sports racing cars ahead of the company’s highly anticipated biennial Villa Erba sale, due to take place on 25 May during the revered Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este weekend. At the auction on the shores of Lake Como, an original, matching-numbers 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider will join a 1957 Porsche 550A Spyder, one of 40 cars made by the German marque exclusively for racing and with a documented global competition history.

The 500 Mondial – chassis no. 0448 MD – was completed by the factory in October of 1954, the 12th of only 13 Pinin Farina Spiders built and one of only five with covered headlights, placing it in the first series of cars. It was sold new to Anthony “Tony” Parravano of Inglewood, California. Parravano quickly made himself known as an entrant of numerous exotic Italian sports cars in Californian racing circles. In February 1955, at Willow Springs, it placed 4th overall and 1st in class with Bob Drake at the wheel. In March of 1956, at the same venue, 0448 MD was driven to a 3rd place finish by Pat O’Connor.

The car has been lovingly owned by a number of North American collectors and has enjoyed periods of long-term ownership, although it has seldom been seen since leaving the race track in the late 1950s, making it highly eligible for historic racing and concours events. More recently, the car has returned home to Maranello, where it was inspected by Ferrari Classiche and granted red-book certification. Furthermore, the car’s certification binder confirms that it retains its original engine, gearbox, and bodywork, truly affirming its status as one of the finest 500 Mondials in existence. The car is estimated to achieve between €4.250.000 to €4.750.000 at auction next month.

With an equally impressive racing pedigree, the 1957 Porsche 550A Spyder is offered at Villa Erba with a fascinating ownership and competition history, having been entered in events all over the world. Chassis no. 550A-0121 was first delivered to Denmark in 1957 and would become the only 550A Spyder delivered to that country, where it raced in a number of events before it was sold to an owner in Kenya, where it also ran as a competition car. In the late-1970s, the Porsche was sold to Giuseppe Freschi in Italy, who entered the car into many iterations of the famous Mille Miglia endurance race for classic cars.

n 2011, the Porsche 550A Spyder was sold to its current owner, and the car has undergone a complete, body-off restoration led by Porsche specialists, returning the Spyder to its original configuration and livery. With its recent restoration work, the 550A Spyder is ready for vintage racing or concours events, having only covered 100km on the road since returning from the workshop. This incredibly rare and sought-after Porsche is estimated to achieve between €3.400.000 to €3.800.000 at auction.

 Following the announcement of an official partnership with Aston Martin during Monterey Car Week last year, RM Sotheby’s is delighted to announce early entries for the company’s Evening of Aston Martin at its annual flagship Monterey auction. Extending the record-setting Monterey sale to three days for 2019 RM Sotheby’s will present a dedicated, single-marque session on Thursday, 15 August at the Monterey Conference Center, featuring more than 30 of the world’s most sought-after road-going and track-ready Aston Martin sports cars from across the marque’s illustrious history.

RM Sotheby’s appointment as the official auction partner for Aston Martin follows the auction house’s successful sale of several of the most valuable Aston Martins ever sold at auction. The partnership will celebrate the anniversary of Aston Martin’s historic 1959 win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as well as support the marque’s successful Second Century Plan, which is delivering a new Aston Martin model every year for seven years, and also promises two ‘specials’ per year, which are set to become collectibles of the future.

RM Sotheby’s is already looking ahead to the single-marque evening, securing an auction highlight in the form of a very early 1964 Aston Martin DB5. A factory left-hand-drive example, chassis no. DB5/1305/L is just the fifth DB5 ever produced, sold new through British Motor Car Distributors in San Francisco to the Washington Fruit & Produce Corporation. The DB5 was purchased by the consignor in 1981 off the street in Sausalito, California, remaining in his private ownership ever since. Presented at Monterey in highly original, never fully restored condition, the matching-numbers DB5 retains its original engine, is finished in its original colours, and features interesting factory options including an overdrive transmission and 3.77 rear axle ratio. Faithfully maintained by marque experts for the last four decades, the well-documented Aston Martin has been driven and enjoyed throughout its life and offers its next enthusiast owner the opportunity to acquire a very early DB5 (Est. $700,000 - $900,000).

Following on the heels of sales in the USA and on the Continent, the UK division of Bonhams’ motoring group sprang into action yesterday, conducting the annual Goodwood Members’ Meeting Sale, achieving a 70 per cent sell rate totalling some £5,613,530 - an increase of around £2 million on last year's sale, with a similar volume of lots. 

A 1964 Aston Martin DB5 Sports Saloon to Vantage specification proved to be the ‘best of British’ as the top lot, realising £636,600 from an international buyer in the room.

British and German marques dominated the top selling lots. A 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SC Coupé from Turkey’s Key Museum achieved £356,500, while a 1955 Porsche 356A Speedster sold for £241,500.

A 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo SE ‘Slant Nose’ Coupé sold for £161,000, well above its estimate (£100,000 - £130,000), and the NEC Classic Car Show Meguiar’s Concours winner, a 1960 Porsche 356B 1600S T5 Cabriolet, realised £138,000.

Stardust was provided by an ex- Sir Elton John Ferrari 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer, delivered new to the singer in 1974, which realised £224,250, while a star of the racetrack, a 1966 McLaren M1B Group 7 ‘Can Am’ Sports Racer, sold for £172,500 to a telephone bidder.

Similarly attracting high bids was the private number plate ‘U8’ which achieved £166,750. Also reflecting the varied lots featured in yesterday’s sale were a child’s Auto Union Type C ‘Silver Arrow’ pedal car by Audi Quattro which sold for £6,325 and a Lamborghini Cingolato 3402 CTL tractor which achieved an estimate-beating £27,600.

James Knight, Group Motoring Chairman at Bonhams, said: “We are very pleased with our first UK sale of 2019. It exceeded last year's total by some distance and we attracted global interest, selling lots to the USA, Australia, the home market and any number of countries on the Continent.

With lots ranging from pioneering Edwardian vehicles to rock stars’ sports cars, Bonhams’ offering yesterday was typically unique and diverse.”

Fittingly, following the successful sale of the DB5 at Goodwood, the marque will be the focus of Bonhams' Aston Martin Sale on 19 May at Wormsley Estate, High Wycombe. 

Bonhams will return to the Goodwood estate on two further occasions this year: 5 July for The Festival of Speed sale and 14 September for The Revival Sale.

Silverstone Auctions are delighted to present their headline lot, the 1954 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, for their Silverstone Classic sale on the 27th and 28th July 2019.

The 300SL Gullwing is an iconic Mercedes-Benz coupe that was first produced in 1954. Only 1,400 cars were ever made and early cars such as this one, are particularly desirable. In 1999 the 300SL Gullwing was voted "Sports car of the century".

“This car comes with an impressive history file and with a unique first UK owner being the late Peter Warr, who was the team manager for the Lotus Formula 1 team.”

“He imported the car from Arizona in 1989 and subsequently enjoyed the car until it was purchased by our vendor in August 1993.”

“What is really special about this Gullwing is its an early car and features the highly desirable full 'belly pans'.”

When supplied new on 27th December 1954 to Hoffman of New York, the car was originally finished in Mercedes racing silver. It is now presented in Fire Engine Red as it was when Peter Warr imported the car in 1989.

It has also been fitted with a sports camshaft upgrade and, more recently, electronic power steering which can be removed if required.

The comprehensive history file shows the thorough and diligent maintenance of the car by well-known 300SL Specialists, including John Surtees Engineering, marque expert Ron Waghorn, marque expert Tommy Johnston and more latterly Neil Corns of Omega Motorsport. The plethora of parts invoices are from Keinle, HK Engineering and Classic Mercedes UK but, most important of all, the injection pump was completely overhauled and rebuilt by HK Engineering in Germany just 2 years ago. Both the gearbox and brakes have also been recently overhauled, including both the brake drums and master cylinders

The car has benefitted from regular use and has been on many European motor tours to exotic places such as Spain, Portugal, Italy, France and Monaco, as well as competing on the Ecurie Ecosse Scottish Tours no less than 12 times!

WALWORTH, Wis. – April 9, 2019 – Mecum Auctions’ Houston 2019 collector-car auction reached $20 million in overall sales in just three days, April 4-6. With quality consignments in heavy supply and large crowds in attendance throughout, the successful auction resulted in a 75-per cent sell-through rate as 767 vehicles changed hands.

The auction’s diverse lineup made for a varied list of top 10 sellers with both vintage and modern as well as both foreign and domestic vehicles making the cut. A 2014 Ferrari F12(Lot S121.1) came in at No. 1 reaching $203,500, and a professionally built 1968 Ford Icon Bronco (Lot S125) followed with a $192,500 sale price. Other top sellers included two Corvettes—a 2019 model ZR1 (Lot S163) and a ’63 split-window (Lot F150.1)—a 1967 Shelby GT350 Fastback (Lot S120) and a 2019 Bentley Bentayga (Lot S172.1), all of which achieved healthy six-figure sales.

Headlining collections, including the 52-car offering from Mario Sueiras and the 49-car assemblage from Pappi’s Garage, were well received. In all, the Sueiras selection—which was imported from Guatemala to join the auction lineup—and the cars from Pappi’s Garage totalled out to more than $3.29 million in overall sales.

Silverstone Auctions to bring super rare, original, elegant and sophisticated cars to the British Marques May sale at Heythrop Park on the 11th May.

It is extremely rare to be able to find real British classics with genuine low mileage and when we talk low mileage we are looking at two cars with under 10,000 miles, a 1975 Jensen Interceptor III and a 1962 Jaguar MKII 3.8 manual with Overdrive.

Continuing the British theme will be the 1956 Earls Court show car from Allard, one of six cars and a 1989 Railton F29 which is 1 of only 2.

A 1975 Jensen Interceptor MKIII with just over 9,000 miles and only three owners, is set to get bidders waving their paddles. This car looks likely to be your best possible opportunity of securing a low mileage, low ownership and never restored Jensen Interceptor. Supplied new in April 1975 in old English white with a red leather interior, this car has had just 3 owners and the current vendor had the car gifted to him by his father. The car has always been dry stored, never required any major work and has recently been lightly recommissioned by a highly regarded marque specialist. In time warp condition, this car represents a unique opportunity to own an Interceptor with all its original factory finishes intact, which include the fluted bonnet, burr walnut facias and Radiomobile. The Interceptor comes with its original toolkit, a substantial history folder with original documents, handbook, wealth of invoices and MOTs corroborating the indicated mileage. If you are a Jensen enthusiast or someone who collects the “Holy Grail” of classic cars then this has to be a must, estimated at £60,000 to £70,000.

For all Jaguar enthusiasts the MKII 3.8 is a real classic, but what makes this 1962 car even more so, is the fact it has just 8,725 miles on the clock and comes in manual with overdrive. The car has substantial history having started out in 1962 and used as a “Sunday car” before the owner passed away leaving his wife to care for the car. In the 1980s a lucky neighbour seized the opportunity to acquire the car before selling it on in the 1990s to the current vendor who had bought it for his father. Beautifully presented in opalescent bronze with cream leather interior which is gently patinated and siting on chrome wire wheels, this cars has been in storage for a fair proportion of its time. Beautifully preserved, with the doors shutting with a satisfying click and maintained by marque specialists, it is accompanied by all the original documents, handbooks, toolkit plus the article of the car as featured in Classic Cars. This really is a remarkable car and a wonderful opportunity to acquire a classic Jaguar in such condition with this low mileage at an estimated £45,000 to £55,000.

The 1956 Earls Court Motor Show saw Allard debut to the world, the prototype MKII Palm Beach, to much acclaim. But the show failed to generate enough orders and just six of these cars were produced, making it a super rare car to own. This prototype went on to become the Allard demonstrator before eventually going into storage in 1976 by Peter Hemsworth. The car was subsequently purchased by Alan and Lloyd Allard, son and grandson of Sydney Allard, who set about restoring the car. Lovingly restored to breath taking standards and presented in Carmine red with a cream and red leather interior, the car was displayed at the 2014 NEC Classic Car Show and subsequently featured in a seven page article including a road test in the January 2015 issue of Octane magazine. One of only two cars produced and based on the running gear of the Jaguar V12 XJS, this is a super sleek, aluminium bodied car produced by the newly formed Railton Motor Company. Priced at £105,000 new in 1991 this Claremont remained in the possession of William Towns until after his death in 1993. The current vendor has owned the car since 2006 forming part of a significant private collection and covered just 13,700 miles since 1989.
