RM Sotheby’s is delighted to announce several key auction entries that will get 2019 off to a bumper start. The Arizona and Paris auctions – scheduled for 17-18 January and 6 February respectively – will feature a varied selection of exotic and rare collector cars, ranging from a 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO and 2012 Lexus LFA, to a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS and single-owner private collections set for the American sale, through to a 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra, 1959 Lister-Jaguar Costin and motorsport memorabilia set for the French capital that extends to a helmet once worn by Ayrton Senna.

Arizona 2019

The Ferrari 288 GTO is regarded as one of the most iconic and exciting supercars of the 1980s. The example coming to Arizona shows less than 3,000 miles, is equipped with air-conditioning, power windows, contrasting orange seat inserts, and is offered at auction for the first time fresh from service (Est. $3,200,000 - $3,600,000). Also set for the Arizona auction, the Lexus LFA is a 4.8-litre, V-10-powered sports coupe made on a limited run of 500 models from the Japanese manufacturer. This example shows a mere 70 miles and is one of just 50 cars equipped with the competition-focused Nürburgring package (Est. $850,000 - $1,100,000). Additional early highlights for RM Sotheby’s Arizona sale are led by a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS, chassis no. 10773. Offered from the famed Skip Barber Collection, following many years of driving and concours enjoyment, this superb, Classiche-certified 330 GTS features a matching numbers powertrain and would be a fantastic purchase for the enthusiast who enjoys both driving and show venues (Est. $2,200,000 - $2,500,000).

Beyond the sports and supercars on offer in Phoenix, two important and very different private collections will cross the block, nearly entirely without reserve. The first is a continuation of The Calumet Collection, comprising 11 British motor cars. The collection features eight Rolls-Royce models, covering almost every era of the celebrated luxury manufacturer, with cars for sale ranging from a1923 Silver Ghost Salamanca through to a 2012 Phantom EWB ‘Year of the Dragon’. The group is headlined by a 1967 Rolls-Royce Phantom V State Landaulet by Mulliner Park Ward, one of just five examples produced. Originally commissioned by the Government of Romania and subsequently delivered to a private owner in Pennsylvania, nearly every available option was specified, including a combination cocktail bar and entertainment cabinet and fluorescent overhead lighting for nighttime parades (Est. $1,000,000 - $1,500,000).

Another significant collection sure to draw interest at the Arizona auction comprises an additional 10 automobiles from The Richard L. Burdick Collection of Texas. Boasting an assortment of pre- and post-war Americana, the group is led by a genuine 1930 Cadillac V-16 Sports Phaeton. An early example and one of no more than 18 survivors bearing Sports Phaeton coachwork, this is one of the most highly desirable classics in today’s market (Est. $750,000 - $900,000, offered without reserve).

Paris 2019

For Paris, key consignments to date include a 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra, imported into the UK in 1973 after being sold new to California. The car spent nearly two decades on display at the Midland Motor Museum and its time in the U.K. is very well documented. The Cobra retains many of its original features, including corresponding body numbers found on the door and boot hinges. Its current displayed mileage of 28,000 is also believed to be correct and original. With Shelby Cobras being highly prized on both sides of the Atlantic, this incredible car is expected to achieve €800,000 to €1 million. An ex-Works Lister-Jaguar Costin known to have competed at The 24 Hours of Le Mans, Goodwood, British Empire Trophy, Crystal Palace Whit-Monday and British GP at Aintree races in 1959 is another hugely desirable car to come to market with RM Sotheby’s. The Lister-Jaguars were truly giant-killers, using a chassis developed by the small, privately-owned Lister sports car company, paired with Jaguar’s immense six-cylinder engine. These cars continue to dominate the historic racing scene and the sleek Costin-bodied example on offer is estimated at €900,000 to €1.1 million.

Rare collectables will complement the motor cars in Paris, including a Rheos helmet, worn by Ayrton Senna in the 1990 F1 season in which he drove the McLaren MP4-5b. The helmet shows signs of wear after being used by Senna in the season that he and McLaren won both drivers’ and constructors’ championship titles and includes the original green liner and radio. This is surely the ultimate collector’s item for any motorsport fan (Est. €80,000 - €120,000).

RM Sotheby’s celebrated a historic weekend in Monterey (24-25 August) with a new record for the most valuable car ever sold at auction, selling a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO for $48,405,000. The 250 GTO championed RM Sotheby’s most historic Monterey offering to date, which resulted in an overall total of $157,931,940 – one of the company’s all-time top performances, the highest grossing auction of Monterey Car Week, and a near 19 per cent increase over 2017 results at the same venue. 

RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction drew considerable international interest in the months leading up to the event, welcoming bidders from 37 countries and seeing 83 per cent of all cars offered to find new homes. The collector car world flocked to Monterey to witness the momentous lineup in person, with more than 90 per cent of bidders present at the preview and in the packed room, despite remote bidding options.

The thrilling two-day sale was led by the remarkable 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis no. 3413 GT, long considered to be the ‘holy grail’ of the collector car world and offered from two decades in the collection of noted businessman, Ferrari enthusiast, and vintage racing driver Dr Gregory Whitten, which sold for $48,405,000, becoming the most valuable car ever sold at auction. This exceeds the previous record by more than $10 million. There were cheers and applause when five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell stepped out of the car after driving it across the auction block in front of an overflowing salesroom, followed by gasps as auctioneer Maarten ten Holder opened the bidding at the unprecedented level of $35 million. Three collectors bidding via telephone competed for the car, sometimes moving in million-dollar increments before it sold for a final $48,405,000 after nearly ten minutes. 

“The appearance of any one of the Ferrari 250 GTO, Aston Martin DP215, Ford GT40, or McLaren F1 and Ferrari 275 P on the Private Sales stand would be a major event, but to have them all together at Monterey this weekend was nothing short of historic,” said Kenneth Ahn, President, RM Sotheby’s, following the auction. “We are deeply appreciative of our clients who have entrusted RM Sotheby’s to offer some of the most significant motor cars to ever come to market and equally grateful to our clients, enthusiasts, and media who travelled from all over the world to attend our sale. There was an unprecedented value of cars offered on the Monterey Peninsula this year, and it was very encouraging to see the level of strong demand across a broad range of great cars – a sign of strength that is very positive for our clients as well as the larger collector automobile market.”

Additional stand-out moments were found throughout the two-day sale, including when the one-off 1963 Aston Martin DP215 Grand Touring Competition Prototype roared onto RM Sotheby’s stage and achieved a final $21,455,000 (est. $18m/22m) following a high-energy bidding contest, becoming one of the most valuable British motor cars sold at auction. The pinnacle achievement for Aston Martin’s racing program and the last competition car built during the David Brown era, DP215 contested Le Mans in 1963 with Phil Hill and Lucien Bianchi behind the wheel, where it became the first automobile to break the 300 kph barrier at the event. RM Sotheby’s also took the opportunity to announce that the company will be partnering with Aston Martin in 2019, presenting an additional Thursday night auction during next year’s Monterey weekend, dedicated specifically to Aston Martin. As the official auction partner of Aston Martin, RM Sotheby’s will celebrate the marque’s 1959 win at Le Mans with an offering of the finest road-going and track-ready cars from its illustrious history.

From great American Classics through historic racers and the rarest of modern supercars, landmark prices were achieved across the 150 cars presented at RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale. The 1966 Ford GT40 Mk II, chassis no. P/1016, part of the iconic trio of GT40s that swept first, second, and third overall at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, reached $9,795,000 on Friday evening. The 1957 Porsche 550A Spyder, a hugely important car in Porsche’s American racing history, soared to high estimate on Saturday to sell for $4,900,000, and a unique 1956 Maserati A6G/2000 Zagato racer fetched $4,515,000, a new record for the model at auction. Modern super cars showed continued strength with a U.S.-spec 1990 Ferrari F40 selling for an above-estimate $1,710,000, and the one-of-25 1998Mercedes-Benz AMG CLK GTR smashing the previous record for the model at $4,515,000. RM Sotheby’s was also proud to partner with Mercedes-AMG in Monterey to offer a never-raced 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT3 ‘Laureus’. The chrome finished GT3 exceeded expectations, selling for a final $885,000, with proceeds to benefit the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
