MORE THAN £10 MILLION ACHIEVED AT BONHAMS GOODWOOD REVIVAL SALE

The ex-Willment Racing Team, ex-Jack Sears 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 achieved a world record £471,900,

Bonhams led the charge in a busy week for the motoring auction world, with the Goodwood Revival sale achieving an astonishing £10,731,518 yesterday, 9 September. The collection of the legendary ‘Gentleman Jack’ Sears was a highlight of the sale, with the ex-Willment Racing Team, ex-Jack Sears 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 (£180,000-220,000) achieving a world-record price of £471,900, more than double its pre-sale estimate. Applause rang out in the saleroom as the hammer fell, and the 7-litre titan of the British Saloon Car Championship (now BTCC) found a worthy new home.

The rest of the Sears collection sold rapidly, including the 1948 MG Midget TC Roadster (£18,000-22,000) and the 1996 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth Sports Saloon (£12,000-15,000) which sold for £28,750 and £25,300 respectively.

The timeless 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta sold above estimate, achieving £606,300. Elsewhere, rally and race cars proved popular throughout the sale. The Peter Riley/Tony Ambrose, 1961 Acropolis Rally Class Winner, ex-Rauno Aaltonen, 1961 Austin-Healey 3000 MK I Works Rally Two Seater sold for £236,700 to a bidder in the busy marquee, whilst the ex-Alan Good/Doreen Good, 1935 Lagonda LG45 4½-Litre Monte Carlo Rally Team Car (£250,000-300,000) sold for well over estimate, selling for £371,100 to a bidder on the telephone.

Fittingly, British marques performed strongly. Highlights include two top lots of the sale; the ex-Georges Fillipinetti 1952 Bentley R-Type Continental which had enjoyed current ownership since 1975, and the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 Sports Saloon. Both achieved £561,500. The ex-Lieutenant-Commander Christopher Tomkinson/Darell Berthon 1927 Bentley 3-Litre Speed Model Sports Two-Seater exceeded its estimate of £250,000-300,000 when it sold for £357,660.

Other highlights included:

• 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 Coupe sold for £287,100
• 2011 Porsche 911 Type 997 GT2 RS Coupe achieved £208,700
• 1961 Jaguar E-Type 3.8-Litre ‘Flat Floor’ Roadster sold for £309,500

The 200-Lot Automobilia section was a great success achieving £576,412 in all with a 87% sell-through rate. In particular, the Donald and Geoffrey Healey collection was immensely popular, with lots ranging from overalls and signed diaries to prototype blueprints and Mille Miglia trophies. Highlights included a painting by Roy Nockolds, ‘Austin Healey ‘NOJ 391’ at Bonneville’ which achieved £6,192, the 1951 Mille Miglia ‘Franco Mazzotti’ silver trophy awarded to Geoffrey Healey which sold for £11,875 and the scratch-built 1:8 scale model of an Austin-Healey 100 which realised £4,000.
