San Francisco – July 31st, 2017 – Bonhams is extremely pleased to announce two very significant race cars for its 20th annual collector car auction during the Monterey/Pebble Beach Car Week, both of which changed the course of history.

From the most victorious manufacturer in Grand Prix racing is the 1980 Ferrari 312 T5 Formula One car driven by Jody Scheckter during his year as World Champion. Ferrari's T series of cars won four Constructors' and three Drivers' World Championships during their dominance of the sport under the brilliant engineer Mauro Forghieri. F1 champ Scheckter campaigned this T5, chassis number 046, in no fewer than eight Grand Prix races that season: the South African, United States, Belgian, Monaco, French, British, German and Dutch GPs. After Scheckter, Ferrari would not see another Drivers' World Championship for another 21 years. With the lineage of a champion and history known from new, this superbly maintained, race-ready V12 F1 Ferrari presents an exceptional opportunity during this, the 70th anniversary year of the greatest name in motor racing: Ferrari.

At a time when the Indianapolis 500 – the crown jewel of American racing – was dominated by heavyweight front-engined cars, Lotus represented not so much a British invasion as it did a technology invasion. Upon the urging of racing great Dan Gurney, Lotus founder Colin Chapman partnered with Ford and returned to the Brickyard with the purposeful quad-cam V8s and saw his lightweight, rear-engined creations triumph. And Bonhams is pleased to offer one those very examples – the 1964 Lotus Type 34 driven by AJ Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Dan Gurney and Jim Clark. As a four-time USAC race winner, eight-time USAC pole winner, and Indy 500 pole sitter, it is the winningest Indy Lotus of all time – during a decade of global domination by Lotus – as well as one of only two Type 34s in existence, the other being in the Indianapolis Speedway Museum.

These two tremendously historic racing cars will be offered alongside an incredible number of pedigree competition machines that have earned this year's sale the unofficial name of the "Year of the Race Cars." Some of these include the Team Cunningham Le Mans Jaguar Lightweight E-Type, the Juan Manuel Fangio multiple GP-winning Maserati 300 S, the Coppa Sant Ambroeus-winning Ferrari Tour de France, the Group B Rally Car Collection (including Lancia, Audi, Ford and Peugeot) and even the first US-imported McLaren F1.
