COLLECTION OF IVAN MAUGER, THE 20TH CENTURY’S GREATEST SPEEDWAY RIDER, OFFERED AT BONHAMS AUTUMN STAFFORD SALE

The 1977 World Speedway Championship Winning, 1977 Jawa Speedway Racing Motorcycle and the 1969 World Speedway Championship Winning, 1969 Jawa Speedway Racing Motorcycle

The lifetime collection of Ivan Mauger OBE, MBE will be offered at Bonhams annual Autumn Stafford Sale on 15 October. Mauger won a record 9 World Championships during his career as a motorcycle speedway and long track rider.

A winner of more than 1,000 international events in 26 countries across the world, Mauger is legendary throughout the motorcycling world. Mauger came from humble beginnings in Christchurch, NZ and his career first went sideways in 1953 aged just 14. He arrived in the UK at the tender age of 17 and raced for a host of British teams including the Wimbledon Dons, the Hull Vikings and the Newcastle Diamonds, with whom he won his first World Championship in 1968.

In 1969 he moved to the Belle Vue Aces where he became the only rider to complete ‘The Triple Crown,’ winning the championship in 1970, 1971 and 1972. He won his 15th FIM world championship gold medal a month before he reached his 40th birthday.
1976 Long Track & 1977 Speedway Championship Final Helmets (£600-800)

Mauger is the holder of six world records, including most Individual Championship Wins and most Individual World Speedway Wins. Simply put, he is the most successful and decorated solo performer that the sport has ever known and was acknowledged as such when he was voted Man of the Millennium by Speedway followers.

On October 15, Bonhams Motorcycle Department is to offer Mauger’s lifetime collection which comprises more than 50 lots, including championship Speedway and long track racing motorcycles, trophies, awards and ephemera. The collection includes a number of World Championship winning motorcycles which are accompanied by a selection of trophies and awards that they won whilst being ridden by Mauger throughout his extensive career.

Speaking of the sale of the collection, Mauger’s family commented: ‘Our father was arguably the most successful speedway rider of all time, and amassed the most astonishing number of trophies, awards and motorcycles. He kept fastidiously good care of each and every one, reflecting his passion and respect for the sport. We take great pride in the condition and variety of his collection, and know that it will bring joy to his fans, admirers and speedway enthusiasts alike when sold at auction in October at Bonhams Autumn Stafford Sale.'

Highlights of the incredible collection include:

The Mauger family added: ‘Our father has always been grateful for his own good fortune, and did not take his successes for granted. As a tribute to our father’s generosity, we will be making a contribution to the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund in his name. Proceeds raised from the sale of several of the lots, including a signature chequered Bell helmet and his trophies from the 1975 season will be donated to the charity.’

Worldwide Auctioneers - Pacific Gove 17/08/17

Auburn, Indiana. July 7, 2017. Worldwide Auctioneers is gearing up for its auction debut during Monterey car week, with an outstanding selection of racers and European pre-war classics, sports and supercars among the recent consignments to The Pacific Grove Auction on Thursday, August 17. Slated to cross the block is a singular and exceptionally well-documented 1937 Delahaye 135M Coupe by Dubos, with exciting one-off custom coachwork and spectacular bureau-style “rollback” roof. “We love the history of the car and it is such a gorgeous example from every angle. Some of the greatest automotive designs in history came about during the ‘30s and this Delahaye is a testament to the great coach builders of the period,” said Rod Egan, Principal and Auctioneer.

Another impressive motorcar lined up to go under the hammer is a stunning one of a kind early production 1938 BMW 328 MM Roadster with Coachwork by Touring. Also consigned to The Pacific Grove Auction is a wonderfully preserved and iconic example of early post-war French Grand Prix history, an unrestored and highly documented 1948 Simca-Gordini Grand Prix Monoposto, raced in top level European and Argentine events, with Jean-Pierre Wimille and Prince Bira among its legendary drivers. Another notable consignment with impeccable racing pedigree is a multiple award-winning 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L-88 Sunray-DX Racing Car, built by Don Yenko with factory L-88 engine, raced at the 1968 24 Hours of Daytona with the GT-class lap record at the 1968 Sebring 12 hours. “Here is a thrilling piece of living American motorsports history that we’re delighted to offer for sale, expertly restored by Kevin McKay to 1968 Sebring Livery and complete with NCRS Heritage and Bloomington Gold® Special Collection Awards,” said John Kruse, Principal and Auctioneer.

Outstanding European sports cars in the sale include “The Lieutenant’s Speedster”, a never-before-offered 1958 Porsche 356A Speedster, with only one owner from new, a US officer stationed in Germany who purchased the car direct from Porsche in Stuttgart. An incredible array of correspondence between the lieutenant and the factory documents the relationship and sale. Also on offer is an exquisite numbers-matching 1934 Mercedes-Benz 380K Cabriolet with Coachwork by Sindelfingen, one of only 154 built during 1933 and 1934, beautifully restored and part of two prominent American collections over the past three decades, with build numbers and delivery details confirmed by a Mercedes-Benz Classic Zertifikat. Additionally included are a Ferrari Classiche certified 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Coupe with only 28,000 miles from new, documented by Ferrari historian Marcel Massini and an extraordinary 2013 Lamborghini 570-4 Super Trofeo Racer, the first example ever to be made available at auction and easily one of the hardest supercars to acquire today. CCA September Sale: urning Dreams into Reality; is this Aston Martin your next project?

THE SEPTEMBER SALE

See the lot list
Turning Dreams into Reality; is this Aston Martin your next project?

Almost all of us have a dream of walking into some dusty, rubbish strewn barn and scrabbling around under the bales of straw and junk to reveal an unloved but restorable old classic that, with a bit of hard work, could make a fortune some sale day.

It’s a dream that has come true for many – we read about such finds all the time. But so often it turns into a nightmare.

Is your barn find buried treasure or a money pit?

Does the lovely old boy taking your cash even own the car in the first place? Paperwork gets lost over time and it’s often hard to prove ownership.

Despite the risk, the rewards can be truly immense. And with a bit of forethought and research, there are ways to mitigate the risk.
1973 Aston Martin AMV8
Estimate (£): 30,000 - 35,000

(all prices +buyer’s premium of 12% including VAT @ 20%)
Buying a Barn find at auction might be less romantic, but it’s one way of avoiding the initial risks.

The consignor will be an expert and will have authenticated the car and traced its true owner, so at least you know what you’re buying is genuine. You also get a fair appraisal of the car, and it’s then a relatively straight-forward task to budget for repairs and restoration.
An example is this 1973 Aston Martin AM V8 in our next sale. Not a true barn find, but what you might call a ‘garage find’, which is no bad thing.

In this case, some of the recommissioning work has already been done before the project was abandoned by the current owner. And it has a partial history file including MoT and SORN records for the last 12 years, and a great registration plate.

So many barn finds can’t be traced through DVLA, but at least with this car you can verify ownership which is perhaps the biggest risk with barn find projects.

A car like this could provide a great return on investment depending on your skill level. In any event, if you love restoring cars, a barn or garage find project can be extremely rewarding in itself, regardless of financial considerations.
1973 Aston Martin V8 'barn find'
Estimate (£): 30,000 - 35,000
SOLD (£): 64,350 (CCA March Sale 2016)
To stand a good chance of success, there are just a few simple rules to follow:

1. First, do your homework. With a car like this Aston Martin, that’s less challenging than with some marques. Read everything you can about the car.

2. Second, check previous sale and auction prices for restored versions in past sales and do your best to get some indication of the likely sale price if that’s your goal.

3. Finally, after an honest appraisal of your restoration skills, or those available to you, and the cost of parts and materials, you can work out what the car is worth to you.

Good luck and happy bidding!
