NEW YORK, New York (September 15, 2015) - She may have famously sung “Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes-Benz”, but legendary singer Janis Joplin personally drove an unmistakably wild 1965 Porsche 365C 1600 Cabriolet. This December, Joplin’s iconic Porsche will be offered as a star attraction at RM Sotheby’s exclusive Driven by Disruption sale in New York City - just in time for the holidays!

“Janis Joplin’s 356C is without question one of the most important Porsches of all time,” says Ian Kelleher, Managing Director of RM Sotheby’s West Coast Division. “It’s a fantastic automobile that transcends art, pop culture and social movements, and is as groundbreaking and stunning as the renowned singer was herself.”

Joplin purchased the Porsche in September 1968 and decided that the original Pearl White finish was slightly too conservative for the Queen of Rock and Roll. She engaged Dave Richards, a friend and roadie with her band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, to customize the car with a kaleidoscopic mural. Described by Richards to represent ‘The History of the Universe’, the dramatic artwork included such graphics as butterflies and jellyfish, as well as a portrait of Joplin with members of the band. The finished product was as colorful as the singer’s personality and certainly representative of the era - a one-of-a-kind flamboyant symbol of San Francisco’s psychedelic rock age. The car quickly became identified with Joplin, who was frequently seen driving it in period.

As Janis’s sister and biographer, Laura Joplin recalls, “Janis drove the car everywhere, all around San Francisco and down to Los Angeles when she was recording there. Wherever Janis went in the car, her fans recognized it. When she parked it and returned, there was always at least one fan note under the wipers.”

Following Joplin’s untimely death in 1970, the Porsche has remained in her family’s ownership, and was enjoyed by her manager, Albert Grossman, who drove it for several years, lending it to visiting family and friends. By the early 1990s, the car was treated to a meticulous restoration, preserving the integrity of the Porsche and presenting the car precisely as it was customized in period.

The Janis Joplin Porsche went on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland in 1995, where it remained a permanent and popular display up until this week. Offered for sale by the Joplin Family, it is expected to bring in excess of $400,000 when it crosses RM Sotheby’s New York podium in December.

Michael Joplin comments, “Besides Janis's music and legacy, her Porsche is the most visual and important piece of memorabilia that exists. Like most people and their car of choice, her Porsche is a direct link to Janis.  She drove it everywhere - and with everyone that was anyone in the San Francisco music scene - with the top down and her feathers flying. Her music, life and car are a part of rock and roll history.” 

Kelleher adds, “As a titan of the creative movement of the late 1960s, Janis Joplin remains one of the music industry’s brightest stars. It is an honor to be working with her family in the sale of this magnificent Porsche and even more so to have the opportunity to showcase such an important woman’s ownership of a classic car.”

The Joplin Porsche will be joined at RM Sotheby’s December 10 sale by a carefully curated selection of some 30 creatively-styled and pioneering motor cars, and select automotive-themed artwork. The second iteration of the company’s Art of the Automobile event, the December auction has been entitled Driven by Disruption. Much like the Porsche’s groundbreaking artwork, each of the cars in the auction showcases the extremes of motoring history and the molds that were broken by engineers and designers in pushing the automotive envelope. Previously slated for November, the new December date was strategically chosen to coincide with one of the most spectacular times of the year in New York City.

“Whether it be a stunningly beautiful coachbuilt automobile, a wild, untraditional design, or a marvel of high performance engineering, the auction will present cars that break with the conventional morals of car design and production. We are delighted to showcase this exhibit during a time in New York that is truly magical,” states Kelleher.

RM Sotheby’s London 2015 – Auction Results

The RM Sotheby’s London 2015 sale was held 7th September at Battersea Evolution in London, resulting in £16,658,410 ($25,404,075 USD) in total sales and a 73.3% sell-through rate. RM’s 9th annual London sale saw 75 cars come to market in their last 2015 European sale.

The top result at the RM Sotheby’s London 2015 auction went to the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione ‘Tour de France’, which realized £4,760,000, followed by the 1964 Ferrari 250 GT/L Berlinetta ‘Lusso’ that sold for £1,232,000 and a 1992 Ferrari F40 that made £845,600.

The sale’s cover car – the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione ‘Tour de France’, chassis 0897 GT – is one of the first of 36 250 GT LWB TdFs built with the single-louvre body style and covered headlamps. The 1964 Ferrari 250GT/L Berlinetta ‘Lusso’, chassis 5885, is the 338th of 350 examples produced and the 1992 Ferrari F40 was offered with fewer than 4,000 kilometres from new.

“Last night represented our ninth consecutive sale in Battersea Park and it turned out to be another great success. The market is seeing that real quality is still commanding strong money, and it doesn’t come much better than the Ferrari 250 Tour de France which headlined Monday’s sale,” said Max Girardo, Managing Director of RM Sotheby’s Europe. “To achieve in excess of £16.6 million in sales demonstrates that the market still has a lot to offer, and RM Sotheby’s is definitely leading the way. We welcomed bidders from 26 countries, of which 23 percent were new clients to RM Sotheby’s. It was particularly fantastic to welcome so many Sotheby’s clients to the sale, further demonstrating how the partnership is working to build a truly global platform for collector cars.”

Another result worthy of mention was the 1964 Maserati Mistral 3.7 Spider, chassis no. AM109/S 035, which garnered significant pre-sale interest. The 1964 Earls Court Motor Show car, it was sold new to British screen icon, Diana Dors, who had fallen in love with it whilst visiting the motor show. As one of 20 right-hand-drive Spiders built, the Mistral was presented in fully restored condition. It made £526,400, a world record for a Maserati Mistral sold at auction.

Bonhams is pleased to announce the sale of two significant Austin-Healeys direct from the Collection of marque connoisseur Arthur Carter.

 

Arthur Carter assembled the greatest collection of Austin-Healeys, including Works and customer 100S models, Works Sebring and Rally 3000s, competition Sprites, one of the three 4000 MKIV Healeys, road going models and, of course the talisman itself, the Donald Healey 100 Coupe.

 

The 1953 Austin-Healey 100 Coupe, registered ONX 113, was the much loved everyday car of Austin Healey founder, Donald Healey, who used it extensively over a 10-year period.

 

Healey had asked chief designer, Gerry Coker, to produce two variants of a coupe on the four-cylinder Austin-Healey 100 platform, in order to explore the possibility of producing a coupe for series-production. A red car, ‘ONX 113’, and a blue car 'OAC 1' were produced. The red car is, by common consent, regarded as the prettier of the two and it was the one that Donald Healey subsequently commandeered for himself. The car was used for continuous development and, when the 100S competition programme came on stream, Donald had the 100S mechanicals, including engine, gearbox and disc brakes, installed. The car effectively became a 100S Coupe, making it totally unique. The blue car still survives and became the test bed in period for the later six-cylinder engine for the subsequent 100/6 model.

 

To Healey collectors around the world, the 100 Coupe is regarded as perhaps the most important – and arguably most coveted – Healey of all, taking Gerry Coker's original timeless design to an even higher level. Donald's coupe is  a truly historic and significant motor car.

 

James Knight, Bonhams Group Motoring Director, commented, “As an Austin-Healey owner myself, I am a committed and avid fan of the marque. I have handled  some of the most important Healeys in my 30 plus year career but have always wanted the privilege of representing Mr. Carter’s legendary 100 Coupe. That time has now arrived and I will enjoy every minute of bringing ONX to market.

 

“What I find most exciting is that, although serious Healey collectors were aware of the car, many collectors in the more general market did not knowthat Healey produced a 100 Coupe – and one as special as this example. It was no secret that Mr. Carter owned the car, but it appeared rarely, and at Club meets at that. It is a dark horse – under the radar of many – that is ready to grace the world’s most prestigious concours and other historic motoring events. There is no doubt the car will attract the attention of world’s great collectors”.

 

1959 WORKS RALLY 3000 ‘SMO 746’

 

The 1959 Works Rally 3000 – ‘SMO 746’ – is the very last of a number of the Works Rally cars from Mr Carter’s collection. SMO 746 was one of three of the first series of 3000 MKI Works Rally cars produced that competed in the 1959 and 1960 International Rally seasons. Rally successes by the three 'SMO' Works team Healeys did much to boost sales of the new '3000' model Austin-Healey.

 

SMO 746 was raced by such luminaries as Jack Sears, Pat Moss (sister of Sir Stirling Moss, and wife of the great rally driver Erik Carlsson), and John Gott. As one of the Works team, it competed in famous events such as the grueling Alpine and Liege-Rome-Liege rallies. When Gott left the Works Team, he took SMO 746 and continued to race it extensively, in the process taking more race wins in period than any other Austin-Healey. Moving with the times, John subsequently developed SMO 746 into a fearsome looking Modsports car, the guise in which it presents today.

 

John Gott was to sadly crash the car at Lydden Hill in 1972 after having a suspected and fatal heart attack. Mr. Carter later acquired the crashed car and chose, as a fitting tribute to the highly respected Gott, to restore the car back to its Modsports configuration.

 

Given the relative simplicity of the 1959 team 3000's, the sale of SMO 746 provides a rare opportunity to secure a one of the most recognizable Works 3000 cars.

 

ARTHUR CARTER

 

ONX 113 and SMO 746 are the two remaining Austin-Healey of significance in Mr. Carter’s long-term ownership. He now feels the time is right for them to find a new home and be cherished by a new generation. Mr. Carter said: “I have enjoyed owning these cars for many years and am not using them as much as I would like. The time has now come for Bonhams to sell the cars and I am sure the new owners will enjoy them as much as I have.”

 

The Arthur Carter Collection will also offer a Connaught A-Type Racing Single-Seater, a car which boasts a long standing historic racing career in the hands of Ken Flint, Jack Horton and Dan Margulies in the 1960s and 1970s.

 

All three motor cars will be previewed in the Bonhams marquee at this year’s Goodwood Revival Meeting, taking place 12 September.

• Bonhams selected to auction the Lotus E20 F1 racing car on behalf of charity Peace One Day
• The car will be transformed into a modern artwork by renowned Brazilian artist Romero Britto, and unveiled by Lotus F1 Team drivers Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado at Singapore’s Museum of Art & Design at 15:00 on Saturday 19 September
• It will then be auctioned by Bonhams International Auctioneers at 16:30
• The sale will be the first time Bonhams conducts a motoring auction in Asia

 

Bonhams international auction house has been selected to auction the Lotus E20 F1 racing car on behalf of charity, Peace One Day. The unique sale will take place Saturday 19 September at the Museum of Art & Design, Singapore.

 

The Lotus F1 Team donated the car to charity, Peace One Day, a not-for-profit organization which campaigns for global recognition of the International Day of Peace (21 September).

 

The charity has invited celebrated Brazilian artist, Romero Britto, to transform the car into a ‘Vision for Peace’. Britto, an internationally renowned pop artist, uses vibrant colours and bold patterns as a visual language of hope and happiness, reflecting his optimism in the world around him.

 

Before it is auctioned by Bonhams, the newly transformed car will be publicly unveiled by Lotus F1 Team drivers Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado,

 

Malcolm Barber, Bonhams Co-Chairman and auctioneer, said: “We’re delighted to have been selected to auction this incredible motor car, with proceeds to go to Peace One Day and their honourable cause. The E20 model was driven by World Champion racing driver Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean and Jerome D’Ambrosio during the 2012 FIA F1 racing season including a race win at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix event. The particular chassis offered is the launch car which was unveiled to the media on February 5th 2012. It is the sister car to racing greats. Retained within the Lotus F1 factory for Research & Development purposes, it is an excellent example of race car design. With such great provenance, and the cars beautiful new design, we expect some spirited bidding at the sale.”

ABOUT THE LOTUS E20 F1 RACING CAR

The Lotus E20 chassis was designed under a team led by James Allison and was driven by Kimi Raikkonen, Romain Grosjean and Jerome D’Ambrosio during the course of the 2012 racing season. The E20 design recorded one win (Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with Kimi Raikkonen) and nine further podium positions. The particular chassis that is to be auctioned was the launch car which was unveiled to the media on February 5th 2012 but has never raced having been retained within the Lotus F1 factory for Research & Development purposes. 

 

ABOUT PEACE ONE DAY

Founded in 1999 by filmmaker Jeremy Gilley, the non-profit organisation Peace One Day drove the initiative that led to the unanimous adoption by the United Nations member states of an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on 21 September – Peace Day. In 2007, Jeremy Gilley and Peace One Day Ambassador Jude Law travelled to Afghanistan to help develop and document preparations for life-saving activities across the country for Peace Day. Bonhams is delighted to confirm that a swift post auction sale of the 1938 Bugatti Type 57 has brought the 5 September Chantilly Sale to a total €8,545,825.

 

The rare, elegant two/three-seater model was once owned by famous French artist, and known Bugatti enthusiast, André Derain.

Best known as a member of the Fauvist group of painters, André Derain (1880-1954) was one of Bugatti's best customers and an aficionado of fine sporting cars. He is said to have owned around 14 Bugattis, the Type 57 offered being his last. As the choice of an artist who selected only the very best Bugattis for his collection of mechanical artworks, the Type 57 is highly desirable.

 

The 1938 Bugatti Type 57 Cabriolet sold for €1,232,000.

2010 Porsche 911 997 GT2 RS - £315,000 – The Salon Privé Sale  Introduced in May 2010 – the 997 GT2 RS was one of the marque’s most powerful turbo engines at the time and is paired with a manual gearbox. The rather special 3.6-litre engine with twin variable-geometry water-cooled turbochargers, produces 620 bhp and has a maximum speed of over 205 mph. We sold this superb C16 GT2 RS at our Salon Privé Sale earlier this month. The striking one of 16 UK-supplied car is a stunning addition to any collection.

1973 Porsche 911 2.7RS Replica - £101,250 – The Silverstone Classic Sale An original version of the 2.7RS may be out of reach to many, but this exacting replica sold at The Silverstone Classic Sale caused a flurry of interest – it’s not hard to see why. Using a 1973 911E Coupe, the previous owner remained faithful to the original and this replica was sold with; lightweight panels, ducktail spoiler, RS front and rear bumpers, ‘lightweight’ RS interior, RS door panels and period Fuchs wheels – amongst a long list of other upgrades. The car sold for £11,250 over its upper estimate.

1975 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI Coupe - £146,250 – The May Sale This one owner from new original UK-supplied right-hand drive example was sold in our May Sale with just over 55,000 recorded miles from new. The car came complete with an extensive history file, including its original wallet, service manuals and ownership paraphernalia – including letters between the first owner and the supplying dealer in 1975. This provenance is one of the catalysts for the car’s total sales value, which was £36,250 over the upper estimate.
