In 1992 Michael Schumacher raced to his first ever podium finish, taking third place in what was to become the last ever Mexican Grand Prix*. The car that took him there, the Benetton-Ford B191B Formula One Racing Single-Seater, is to be offered as part of Bonhams Bond Street Sale with a pre-Sale auction estimate of £240,000-300,000.

 

Schumacher’s Mexican place was only the eighth race of his fledgling career, and heralded the start of many podium appearances for the seven-time Formula One World Champion.

 

Qualifying third fastest of the 30 entries, he tore round to score his first ever Formula One 'podium' finish, with third place. The car today is liveried in the same specification to this historic race. He then followed up that performance in the Benetton-Ford by qualifying fifth fastest in it for the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos, and again finishing third for the second top-three finish of his now legendary Formula 1 career. The car was then retired from active service.
 

Unusually for many historic Grand Prix single-seaters, this car is in full working order and thus enables the new owner the opportunity to drive, or race, the same car that Schumacher raced.

 

The magnificent Benetton-Ford provided landmark performances in the career of not just Schumacher, but three great drivers who campaigned it in the early 1990s.

 

“Chassis 6 is highly respected as the Benetton that took Schumacher to his first podium position. But, that’s not where the story ends, for this was also the car that took three-time Formula One World Champion driver, Brazil’s Nelson Piquet, through his last Grand Prix on the beautiful Adelaide street and parkland circuit in the 1991 season,” said James Knight, Bonhams International Head of Motoring.

 

“For his Benetton debut, chassis 6 then went on to take present-day Formula One TV commentator and highly-respected pundit Martin Brundle to eighth in the South Africa Grand Prix of 1992. This car really has enjoyed a fantastic career, and now more than two decades after it’s debut, it can make an exciting addition to any enthusiasts motoring collection.”

 

Bonhams Bond Street Sale takes place at Bonhams London headquarters on 30th November 2014. With only 35 entry slots available and several motor cars already consigned, the annual event is set to be another exciting auction from Bonhams record breaking motoring department.

 

* After a 23-year hiatus, Formula One is scheduled to return to Mexico City for the Mexican Grand Prix 2015.

A rare 109-year-old steam car, originally bought by a Norfolk farmer for £450, sold for £371,100 at Bonhams London to Brighton Run sale.

 

Taking the sale top spot, the rare Gardner-Serpollet was one of 23 cars and 162 lots of automobilia at Bonhams biggest London to Brighton auction yet, with the sale collectively achieving £1.5 million.

 

With his passion for motoring, the late George Milligen was no ordinary Norfolk farmer. Often seen out driving the cars from his varied motoring collection, he purchased the Gardner Serpollet in 1946 for £450 from Harpsichord maker, Alec Hodson, and kept it in excellent condition throughout his decades of ownership - remaining in his family for fifty years.

 

Elsewhere, a turn of the century 1900 Cleveland Sperry System Electric Three-Seater Stanhope sold for £55,200 to a telephone bidder from Austria who, after giving the winning bid, promptly flew into the UK just to take part in Sunday’s London to Brighton Run in his auction purchase.

 

“It’s wonderful when we’re able to give our buyers the opportunity to take part in the Run year-on-year. Bonhams have again enjoyed another wonderful London to Brighton sale, with an excellent turn out and some truly wonderful motor cars sold,” said James Knight, Bonhams Group Motoring Director.

 

Further sale highlights include a 1901 Panhard et Levassor Twin-Cylinder 7hp Rear-Entrance Tonneau at £259,100; a 1903 Malicet et Blin 8hp Four-Seater Rear-Entrance Tonneau at £102,300; and a charming 1904 De Dion Bouton 8hp Model V Coupé to an auction room bidder for £88,860.

BONHAMS TO OFFER RARE FERRARI 275 GTB ALLOY

BERLINETTA FOR BOND STREET SALE

 

 

A 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB Alloy-bodied Berlinetta - once considered to be the finest production Ferrari ever built - is to star in Bonhams New Bond Street auction, carrying an estimate of £1,500,000-2,000,000.

 

James Knight, Bonhams International Motoring Director, said: “This is a wonderfully original, long-term preserved, Ferrari 275 ‘Longnose’ Berlinetta offered from the Maranello Rosso Collection. It is one of the finest examples of its type that we at Bonhams have ever had the privilege to offer.”

 

From 1964 to 1968 almost 800 275 Berlinettas were produced, but just a fraction were the highly desirable longnose alloy variants.

 

This example, chassis 08035, has been inspected by renowned Ferrari authority Marcel Massini who described the motor car as “… one of the very best cars from the Maranello Rosso Collection. A real gem.”

 

Finished in a beautiful shade of green, known as Verde Scuro it retains many of its original features, and has just 61,212 kilometers recorded on the odometer.

 

08035 was sold new on November 18, 1965, by SEFAC Spa to its first owner, Franco Palma, of Via Pergolesi, Rome, Italy, and the price paid was Lire 5,250,000.

 

Signor Palma was to keep the Ferrari for a little over 10 years, before selling it, in 1976, to Bellancauto SA of Rome, a company owned by mineral-water magnate, amateur racing driver and now legendary classic car collector Fabrizio Violati.

 

Subsequently this magnificent, completely unspoiled, Ferrari 275GTB became one of the star exhibits in the Violatti’s Maranello Rosso Collection museum in San Marino.

A 1903 Panhard et Levassor Model KB Four-Cylinder Side-Entrance Phaeton - first owned by Spanish aristocrat the Marques of Ivanrey - will star in Bonhams annual London to Brighton sale.
Ricardo Soriano, the Marques of Ivanrey, received the Panhard new in January 1903, heralding it the 18th car ever to be registered in Madrid, Spain.
Soriano was a well known entrepreneur of great wealth and influence. Famed for his eclectic pursuits, the multifaceted aristocrat was an early promoter of tourism to the Costa del Sol, paying particular interest to the Spanish seaside city of Marbella where still to this day one of the city's main streets is named after him.
The historic Panhard remains mostly in original condition, only in 1975 seeing minor restorative efforts to upholstery and paintwork. Having remained in the ownership of Soriano for 71 years, the Panhard has since changed hands just twice, only leaving its native Spain in 2006 for the Netherlands where its current owner resides. Competing in the London to Brighton Run as recently as last year, the Panhard carries an estimate of £600,000-700,000.
James Knight, Bonhams Group Motoring Director, said: "At 111 years old, the Panhard is in astoundingly good condition for such a well traveled roadster. A wonderful addition to this year's sale, it is among some 20 veteran cars, making 2014 our biggest London to Brighton sale to date."
Further sale highlights include the luxurious 1904 CGV H1 Four Cylinder Side Entrance Phaeton. Kings, princes, marquises and other aristocrats were among the clientele of CGV during its peak era, as well as members of high society on both sides of the Atlantic.
The car offered in Bonhams sale was bought by Olry Roederer from the well known champagne house, Louis Roederer, but sadly he passed away the same year before he could enjoy his magnificent purchase. Over the years the car has taken part in many rallies and other events both in the UK and mainland Europe including the celebrated annual London to Brighton run. As one of the star lots in the sale, the CGV is estimated at £390,000-440,000.
Also in the sale, a 1903 Clement 12/16 estimated at £350,000-400,000; a 1903 Darracq 12hp estimated at £150,000-180,000; and estimated at £70,000-80,000, a 1904 De Dion Bouton Model V 8hp Coupé.
Held on 31st October at Bonhams flagship showroom on 101 New Bond Street, the annual London to Brighton Run Sale will offer over sixty lots of both veteran motor cars and automobilia.
