THE TRUE STORY OF HEALEY THE COLLECTION OF DONALD AND GEOFFREY HEALEY OFFERED AT BONHAMS GOODWOOD REVIVAL SALE

THE TRUE STORY OF HEALEY
THE COLLECTION OF DONALD AND GEOFFREY HEALEY OFFERED AT BONHAMS GOODWOOD REVIVAL SALE

Roy Nockolds (British, 1911-1979), ‘Austin Healey NOJ 391’ at Bonneville (£1,500-2,000)

An outstanding selection of motoring and personal items from the collection of Donald M Healey CBE, his son Geoffrey Healey and the Healey Works at Warwick will be offered at Bonhams Goodwood Revival sale on 9 September.
Donald Healey is a man who needs little introduction to the motoring world: a speed record holder, accomplished rally driver, car designer and founder of the Donald Healey Motor Company, he irrevocably changed the landscape of British motor design.
For the first time, a vast array of Automobilia and personal items belonging to Donald and his son Geoffrey will come to public auction. The collection comprises 75 lots and includes signed books, diaries, unseen concept car artwork, scratch-built models, trophies and meticulous notes from races and test drives and record breaking runs on the flats at Bonneville.
One of the more unusual items in the collection is a radio receiver built by Donald Healey, which was one of his key interests outside of racing and car design. He is credited with having designed and built the first CCTV system in the UK at Trebah in Cornwall.
Kate, daughter of Geoffrey and granddaughter of Donald added: ‘It has been an immense responsibility looking after my father’s collection over the 20 years since his death. It was especially precious to him – he kept everything! Racing certificates, bunches of keys, paintings, trophies and car designs all formed part of the collection. Anything that was part of the Healey story was safely stowed away. It is an eclectic mix spanning many years, and each item has its own story. We feel that these treasured items deserve to find homes all over the world with admirers of Healey cars and their history.’

Highlights include:
Roy Nockolds (British, 1911-1979), ‘Austin Healey NOJ 391’ at Bonneville (£1,500-2,000)
A watercolour and gouache by Roy Nockolds, depicting Donald Healey in the Austin Healey 100 ‘NOJ 391’ at the Utah Salt Flats on his way to breaking numerous American Automobile Association records. The image was so loved by the family that they chose it for their Christmas cards in 1954.

A scratch-built 1:8 scale model of an Austin-Healey 100 (£2,000-3,000)
Presented to Geoffrey’s widow, Margot, the model is intricately detailed and constructed from more than 200 individual parts.

Donald Healey’s Dunlop Overalls
Green overalls with Dunlop patches used by Donald Healey at race events at the Sebring circuit in Florida during the 1950s and 1960s.

The 1951 Mille Miglia ‘Franco Mazzotti’ Silver Trophy awarded to Geoffrey Healey (£2,000-3,000)
This silver trophy was awarded to Geoffrey Healey who had driven the race with his father, Donald. They took part in the Nash-Healey 3850cc Spider, finishing fourth in the Fast Closed or Convertible Class.

Toby Wilson, Head of the Automobilia Department commented: "The Healey archive represents an insight into the life and times of father and son, Donald and Geoffrey Healey, and illustrates their seemingly endless motoring talents. This collection has been a pleasure to research, and it is a privilege for Bonhams to be offering it for sale."
