A 1991 Ferrari F1-91 (Type 642) leads the single-owner Willi Balz Collection at Bonhams. Although primarily known and acknowledged as auctioneers, Bonhams will sell the collection by the tender, otherwise known as sealed bid, process.
The Ferrari F1 offered has an enviable racing history. It was driven by the greats, Jean Alessi and Alain Prost in its 1990s heyday, racing at the Monaco Grand Prix, the Phoenix Grand Prix, the F1 Grand Prix Brazil, and the San Marino Grand Prix.
Also known as the Ferrari 642, the grand prix car was designed by Steve Nichols and Jean-Claude Migeot, and was a development of the Scuderia Ferrari team’s 641 chassis that had brought the team victory in the 1990 season. Chassis number 124 is estimated to realise €300,000 - 600,000.
1966 Cooper-Maserati T81, estimated at €300,000-400,000
Elsewhere, the collection features a 1966 Cooper-Maserati T81, estimated at €300,000 - 400,000; a 1968 BRM P133, at €300,000 - 400,000; and a 1930s Alvis Special Single-Seater, at €120,000-150,000.
The collection also features several exciting motorcycles, including a c.1924 Henderson De Luxe Four Combination, estimated at €25,000 - 35,000; a c.1957 Norton Manx Model 40 Racing Motorcycle, at €16,000 - 20,000; a 1950s BMW Racing Kneeler Motorcycle, at €8,000 -10,000; and a 1974 Kawasaki 500 Mach III, at €5,000 - 8,000.
What is a sale by tender?
A sale by tender is when a customer submits a sealed bid in order to purchase the Lot. If successful, the bid price submitted will be the price paid, subject to a Buyers Premium and any applicable tax.
The collection will open to tender in early September and close on 27 September.
James Knight, Bonhams Group Motoring Director, said: “Bonhams has a long and well-established reputation of working closely with our clients and working to their instruction. The nature of this consignment requires that the Collection is sold where it is domiciled and by the Tender Bidding process. A full listing of the inventory will be online within the next couple of weeks but customers can register their interest now. We shall offer an interesting and diverse collection with estimates ranging from €2,000 to 600,000.”
