RECORDS SET FOR ANY AMERICAN CAR AND ANY BRITISH CAR AT RM SOTHEBY’S FRIDAY MONTEREY AUCTION

RECORDS SET FOR ANY AMERICAN CAR AND ANY BRITISH CAR AT RM SOTHEBY’S FRIDAY MONTEREY AUCTION

·         Le Mans legend: Ex-Ecurie Ecosse Jaguar D-Type smashes record for a British automobile sold at auction at final $21.78 million
·         CSX 2000, the very first Shelby Cobra, achieves $13.75 million, setting a new auction benchmark for an American car
·         RM Sotheby’s flagship Monterey, California sale continues, Saturday, August 20

MONTEREY, California (August 19, 2016) –  RM Sotheby’s kicked off its flagship Monterey, California sale before a packed house tonight, setting a series of records for automobiles offered fresh to the market.

Leading the charge, a 1955 Jaguar D-Type, chassis no. XKD 501, sold for $21,780,000 – the highest price ever achieved for a British automobile at auction. The 1956 Le Mans-winning D-Type, widely recognized as the most important Jaguar ever made, was the subject of a 15-minute bidding contest between four determined collectors before selling for a final $21.78 million, comfortably surpassing its $20 million low estimate.
The first D-Type supplied by Jaguar to a privateer team, XKD 501 was sold new to the famed Scottish Racing team, Ecurie Ecosse, who campaigned it to victory at the grueling 1956 Le Mans 24 Hours. It was offered at tonight’s sale following almost two decades in one of America’s leading collections. The record-setting Jaguar is only the fourth British car to have sold for more than $10 million at auction and eclipses the previous record by over $7 million. That was set by a $14.3m 1962 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato sold by RM Sotheby’s in New York in December 2015.

Closely following the sale of the legendary D-Type was an American legend - CSX 2000, the very first Shelby Cobra, which also roared into the record books, commanding a final price of $13,750,000 - a new auction benchmark for an American automobile. One of the most highly anticipated lots of this year’s Monterey auction week, the original Shelby Cobra was constructed and kept from new by the legendary Carroll Shelby and never left his care. Offered by the Carroll Hall Shelby Trust, CSX 2000’s strong sales price represents a new record for an American car sold at auction, besting the previous record ($11m for a 1968 Ford GT40 Gulf / Mirage), which was set at the same sale in August 2012.
Rounding out the top three sales for the evening was a 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza Spider, chassis no. 0510 M, driven by the big three of American racing in period: Phil Hill, Carroll Shelby and Jim Hall. Presented by its owner of 60 years, Jim Hall, who addressed the standing-room only audience, it commanded $5,225,000 to establish a new auction record for the model.
“Tonight’s records for any British car, any American car, and for a Ferrari 750 Monza demonstrate that collectors remain prepared to part with significant sums to secure the rarest, fresh-to-the-market automobiles,” says Ian Kelleher, Managing Director, RM Sotheby’s West Coast Division. “These outstanding prices achieved at our flagship sale are a reassuring sign that the market remains healthy and vibrant.”
RM Sotheby’s continues its flagship Monterey sale tomorrow evening from 7pm PT. For further information, please visit www.rmsothebys.com. Full results will be published in the coming days.
*Results are listed in USD and include 10 percent buyer’s premium.

PORSCHE RALLY LEGEND FOR SALE WITH H&H CLASSICS

PORSCHE RALLY LEGEND FOR SALE WITH H&H CLASSICS
"The Most Successful Porsche Carrera Of All Time"
#

The most successful race rallying Porsche of all time according to Classic 911 Magazine, a right- hand-drive Carrera 2.7 litre lightweight, AUI 1500, will be sold privately by H&H Classics.
It has recently undergone a total restoration and it will be on display at the H&H Classics showroom in Hindhead, Surrey. This remarkable car is a living legend and its success has turned it into something of a media star featured on film and with a song dedicated to it and numerous mentions in leading motor racing magazines. This August it has featured in an eight-page spread in Classic Porsche Magazine.
Dominic Lyncker, MD of H&H Classics, says: "We are delighted and honoured to be chosen to sell this legendary race car. This car is the stuff of motor racing history and is one of the greatest Porsche Carrera 2.7 RS of all time." Research confirms that 9113601501 competed in over 40 rallies, 14 of which were International.
Truly this car is a star. Its exploits were captured on rare period film by the BBC of the 1973 RS rallying and is available today on several DVD's containing this footage. Sponsors Dunlop and Porsche have used its mage in period advertising campaigns. A pop song was written about the car and it's driver by Eurovision song contest winner Phil Coulter and released in single and album formats on vinyl in 1974. The title of the song "Hey CB" is named after it's driver Cathal Brendon Curley. The car was filmed earlier this year for a National TV program “Posh Pawn” in relation to raising finance for the development of the owner’s pioneering Classic Car Forensic business. The Brands Hatch Circuit in Kent was booked exclusively for the purpose and the program will be broadcast on Sunday 21st August at 7pm on Channel 4.
The car was one of 17 RHD Porsche 2.7 Carrera RSs supplied with Sport "Lightweight" equipment in 1973 and the last one imported to the UK. It therefore had all the new homologation features of the later cars that included RSR short trailing arms. Of the 17 supplied 15 have known to have survived.
In 1973 9113601501 entered the RAC Rally, round eight of the World Rally Championship and finished as the highest placed Porsche, wining the Team Prize. It is one of only 11 RSs known to have entered the RAC Rally during a period in which only six finished this gruelling event.
In 1974 it won three International Rallies outright against the toughest opposition found anywhere in the world - 14 other RSs. Nowhere else in the world was there such intense competition from 14 of the same car. The events were also diverse: one five-day two-night event, a three-day event and finally a two-day format with night driving. Porsche never won an International Rally in their works backed 2.7 RSs, managing only a 2nd place.
The wins broke the domination of the works backed Ford Escorts in the 1970's beating their best driver Roger Clarke in the process, starting a period of intense competition between the two companies that lasted for six years.
Number 9113601501 is the only surviving 911 RS that has won the Circuit of Ireland International Rally, the third oldest rally in the world. It finished with a record breaking 5m 48s, a time that can never be beaten by an RS now that it has changed into a three-day event. No other surviving RS has won a five-day two-night rally.
As a result of it's success the car featured on the front cover of a specialised book on Porsches in Rallying. The car was sponsored by official Porsche importers, Porsche Cars Great Britain and Porsche AG Stuttgart that sent a cheque to the driver for the equivalent of approximately £1,000 after he won the Circuit of Ireland.
In a return to the RAC Rally in 1978 it was one of two cars used to develop a new rally aid, an electronic trip meter, invented by navigator John Cartwright named the Terratrip.
When homologation ran out in 1979 for the use of an RS as a Rally car it was exported to South Africa where it was converted with parts supplied by the Porsche factory into a 3.4 Litre RSR. Competing in the Rolo Motors Historic Championship and Porsche Club SA events sponsored by Lindsay Sakers, the official Porsche importers at the time for South Africa.
Following an accident after achieving pole position at the old Kyalami F1 Race Circuit in 1987 it was stored for 23 years until 2010 when it was purchased by RS specialist Mark Waring and restored.
The restoration of the car set a new standard for doing so as each panel was carefully unpicked to facilitate preserving as many factory welds as possible. It was on a factory jig for two years.
Back in the UK and fully restored it is the only Porsche ever to return 40 years later and celebrate its wins by being photographed on the Start/Finish ramp of every Rally it won in 1974 and in the livery that it won each event in.
When attending a charity event at the Loughgall Festival of Motorsport in Armagh in 2014 Cathal Curley and the two navigators that accompanied him on the winning events, Austin Frazer and Terry Harryman were in attendance. All three signed the bonnet of the car. The navigator Terry Harryman partnered Finnish driver Ari Vatanen through his greatest years of rallying.
The car has been reissued a missing ID Plate by Porsche AG Germany confirming in writing all criteria were met in full during the process and the current Managing Director of Porsche Cars Great Britain wrote a personal letter and the Register Secretary of the Porsche Club Great Britain to the DVLA supporting the reallocation of its Irish number AUI 1500 when it won the rallies in 1974.
The car has been on display at Porsche OPC's Guildford and Mid Sussex since 2014.
The PCGB Brands Hatch Festival of motorsport was attended by Porsche AG and their museum cars and 9113601501 was included as the only RS in two sessions of display laps. Derek Bell in his Le Mans winning 962 and Richard Atwood in a 917 were in attendance.
The car recently returned to a special "Circuit Deja Vu" reunion event in 2016 with 172 Circuit of Ireland rally cars and took pride of place in a display outside the Hotel headquarters for the event. Cathal Curley and Austin Frazer drove in the car, reliving the Ireland's infamous Mols Gap Stage and Cathal Curley was filmed driving the Healy Pass from inside the car.
Probably one of the most comprehensive collections of research material and memorabilia has been assembled to accompany this unique car.

THE PERFECT PORSCHE: AWARD-WINNING 550RS SPYDER OFFERED AT BONHAMS GOODWOOD REVIVAL SALE

THE PERFECT PORSCHE: AWARD-WINNING 550RS SPYDER OFFERED AT BONHAMS GOODWOOD REVIVAL SALE

An exceptionally original, never restored yet beautifully preserved 1956 Porsche 550RS Spyder, estimated at £4,700,000-6,200,000, is announced for Bonhams Goodwood Revival Sale, taking place 10 September in Chichester, West Sussex.

“The 1956 Porsche 550RS Spyder offered is so original, that you could travel back in time 60 years and find it in much the same condition. It’s exactly how a 550 would have looked, smelt and felt like when James Dean famously purchased his example back in 1955.” Dean’s was perhaps the most famous of the 550s; he called his example the ‘Little Bastard’.

“Chassis number 550 0090 hasn’t been thrashed around, it’s been well looked after, and even won the FIVA award for originality at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2010 – the perfect Porsche. A real time warp, and likely the last one left in such excellent, original condition.”

Launched in 1953 at the Paris Auto Show, the lightweight roadster was the first true competition car to come from the Stuttgart marque. Just 90 550s were built, each featuring a super lightweight aluminum body, with two seats and an open-top. It looked incredible on the road, and even more so at speed on the track.

Throughout the 1950s, the Porsche 550 was one of motor sport’s most dominant race cars, out-performing almost all other models in its class.

American monthly magazine, ‘Road & Track’, said of the model: “The 550 had full road equipment, with lights and so forth, and a top, and enough stamina and ground clearance to compete in rallies – which it did.  The bodywork and weather gear qualified the 550 for international sports car races – and Hans Herrmann took first in class and sixth overall in the 550’s first race, the 1954 Mille Miglia…. Herrmann was third overall in that year’s Carrera Pan Americana. There were 75 cars with bigger engines in that race, and Herrmann beat 73 of them…”

The cars were built by Porsche in exclusive numbers. In the US, the model did not qualify as a production sportscar, even with its top and road equipment. There weren’t enough of them to be a real road car, according to the governing SCCA (Sports Car Club of America).Unofficially, the same rule makers would later cheerfully confess they kept the Porsche 550s out to give other makes a chance!

These little Porsches were extremely quick in a straight line – having a claimed top speed of some 220km/h – 137mph – and accelerating from 0-100km/h – 62mph – in less than 10 seconds - spectacular indeed with such a small capacity engine in the early 1950s.

The 550 is an icon of 1950s sports car design. It stands today as one of the most collectable cars produced by the Stuttgart marque, with examples appearing in only the finest collections aroundthe world.

HISTORIC EX-ROY SALVADORI FRAZER-NASH LE MANS REPLICA TO BE OFFERED AT BONHAMS GOODWOOD REVIVAL SALE

HISTORIC EX-ROY SALVADORI
FRAZER-NASH LE MANS REPLICA
TO BE OFFERED AT BONHAMS
GOODWOOD REVIVAL SALE

1950 Frazer-Nash Le Mans Replica, estimated at £580,000-640,000

In 1951, the celebrated British racing driver, Roy Salvadori, debuted his glorious new Frazer-Nash Le Mans Replica at Silverstone for the BRDC International Trophy Meeting.

It was the race that would forever haunt himdue to a crash that very nearly ended his fledgling racing career.

“I was leading, a big thing for me then, ahead of Bob Gerard, Tony Crook and the other Frazer-Nashes. So I was feeling pretty good about life,” Salvadori told Motorsport magazine in 2008. “…we came up to lap a group of slower cars which were having their own battle. I tried to overtake them all, but it couldn’t be done.”

The car slid wide and clipped with a cement-filled oil drum, causing the car to roll several times.

“At Northampton hospital they decided they could do nothing for me, and pushed me into a corner. They rang my parents, but told them I was unlikely to be alive by the time they got there. A priest was summoned and gave me the last rites.”

Miraculously, Salvadori survived, later claiminghe had no memory of the crash that almost claimed his life. “Well, that’s thebest way to have an accident you know,” he later said in a TV interview. “I’vehad very many accidents and those that never worry me are the accidents whichmay be horrific, but I don’t remember anything about them. I don’t remember thestart of the day; I don’t remember anything about that particular day in mylife.”

“Shortly thereafter, the Frazer-Nash wassuccessfully rebuilt to the latest 1951 Le Mans Replica specification,” saidJames Knight, Bonhams International Group Motoring Director. “Salvadorirecovered and resumed racing in the very same Frazer-Nash later that year onOctober 6, 1951, at Castle Combe, immediately finishing a strong third overallin the unlimited-capacity sports car event.”

Salvadori went on to campaign the car in 1952, winning the 2-litre class andfinishing sixth overall in a return to Silverstone at the May Meeting'sProduction Sports Car event. He later came fourth and second in class to MikeHawthorn in the May 29 British Empire Trophy event at Douglas, Isle of Man, andsecond to Ken Wharton's works Mark II Le Mans car in the 100-mile sports carrace at Boreham on August 2.

The famous racer always recalled 'VHX 839'with great affection: "I decided I really needed a car I could use on theroad, and that's why I bought the Le Mans Rep. It was a super car to drive.Unfortunately, I nearly wrote myself off in it at Silverstone but I was racingit again less than a year later. It was a lovely car and I adored driving it…”

Essex-born Salvadori was of Italiandescent, and had immense charm and charisma. Well respected in the sport, hecompeted in an incredible 47 world championship Formula One Grands Prix in hislifetime. Now offered at Bonhams Goodwood Revival Sale on 10 September, the1950 Frazer-Nash Le Mans Replica is estimated at £580,000-640,000
