• Bonhams returns to Stuttgart for the single-marque Mercedes-Benz sale on 28 March 2015, coinciding with Retro Classics Stuttgart week
• A 1938 540 Kompressor Cabriolet A heads the sale. Fresh to the market, the 540 K is estimated at €2,000,000-2,500,000 (£1,500,000-1,900,000)
• A 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster is offered at an estimated  €900,000-1,200,000 (£700,000-940,000)

 

Bonhams single-marque Mercedes-Benz sale will return to Stuttgart on 28 March, coinciding with Retro Classics Stuttgart week, the largest annual exhibition of classic cars in Southern Germany.

 

A spectacular 1938 540 K Cabriolet (complete with covered spare wheel) heads the sale. The Mercedes-Benz auction is the first time the 540 K has been publicly offered, available at an estimated €2,000,000-2,500,000 (£1,500,000-1,900,000).

 

Restored to Concours condition, the two-seater 540 K is a significantly lighter variant of the original 500 K design. Developed in the mid-1930s, it was one of the most impressive cars available at the time, and today remains distinctly rare.

 

A 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster is an additional early consignment, estimated at €900,000-1,200,000 (£700,000-940,000). An extremely original example, the roadster has been in current ownership since 1980, and at its peak was the fastest production Mercedes around.

The 300SL was previously owned by German industrialist, Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach (1907-1967), of the Krupp dynasty.

Last year’s sale attracted many bidders from around the world, achieving a total £9.4 million (€12 million) - a wonderful result for a sale only in its first year. Held in the Mercedes-Benz Museum, Bonhams auction will showcase a variety of some 40 classic motor cars from across the German marque’s century long history.

 

“Unique and authentic vehicles – that is the idea we share, both Mercedes-Benz and Bonhams. Originality plays an important role in our philosophy,” explains Michael Bock, Head of Mercedes-Benz Classic and Customer Centre. “After the successful auction last year we will once more offer an appropriate stage for Bonhams. Classic car collectors and visitors of the museum will once again be given a taste of exciting auctions.”

 

The Mercedes-Benz Museum charts the entire history of the world’s oldest car manufacturer. A total of 1,500 unique exhibits are featured in the museum, including 160 vehicles.

1955 Volkswagen Type 2 Samba Microbus   This vehicle is the first VW Type 2 Samba imported into the UK. The right-hand drive bus, built at the original VW factory in Wolfsburg, was delivered new into the UK on the 21st November 1955 by John Colborne-Baber, the founder of the first ever VW dealership in the UK. Colborne-Baber’s long association with Volkswagen started as a result of John being approached by former army officer George La-Haye. After the end of the Second World War, La-Haye, who was stationed in Germany, purchased three new Volkswagen Beetles, the last of which he returned to the UK with.   Colborne-Baber showed an immediate interest in the Beetle and made George an offer on a part-exchange for a Wolseley 6/80, which he accepted. Colborne-Baber was so impressed with the Beetle he’d acquired, that he then approached Volkswagen in Germany and began importing Volkswagen vehicles into the UK in 1949.   Sambas were never officially imported new into the UK, and as such ‘SGP 62’ is thought to be the only surviving example of the few Wolfsburg-built Type 2s in the country. In 1992 ‘SGP 62’ was rediscovered in the West Country after 30 years in storage. It has been professionally restored over the last 18 months as a faithful reproduction of its condition as used by the Colborne-Baber family. ‘SGP 62’ has been restored, as much as possible, to original specification with a few additional safety and convenience features, whilst retaining its completely original appearance. A new bespoke period-correct Devon interior, modelled on the design that was enjoyed by the Colborne family, was created by VW expert Kevin Morgan including a correct Osokool fridge and Dudley stove. These rare items were sourced specially for this bus and are in mint condition. The vehicle also comes with a certificate of authenticity from the Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen. This is a beautiful and rare Samba Microbus, historically important in terms of its VW legacy in the UK and ready to be appreciated and enjoyed. Estimate (£): 70,000 - 75,000 Read more here

1972 BMW 3.0 CSA   The BMW E9 Coupe was one of the most handsome cars ever to roll from the Munich factory. Sleek as a shark, it had a wonderfully elegant and airy cabin with slim windscreen pillars, a large glass area and a tastefully restrained wooden dash. Showing three owners from new this is a very special car indeed with the last two owners being of particular note. Owned for the last six years by Gaz Coombes, the front man of Supergrass, prior to his ownership it was owned by famed Hollywood actor Michael York. At time of auction the car will have just finished a detailed sympathetic restoration, which will involve respraying the car in its original Fjord Blue along with a strip down, check and refurbishment of the engine. Presented with a fantastic history file containing photographs of Michael York with the car along with letters and documents by Michael York from his ownership, there is also a superb number invoices from the early years of the cars life. 1971 Porsche 911T 2.2 Coupe     Offered here is a very original example of the sought after 911T which was first registered on March 31st 1971 in Zurich, Switzerland. This is a beautiful, unmolested, matching numbers example, so difficult to find in this condition. The original colour was Albertblau as is documented in the Porsche certificate, this was subsequently changed to Gemini Blue. The interior is the original black leatherette with fabric inserts and the carpets original fleck grey. It is rare to find a car in this lovely condition with a patina that restored examples simply cannot match. With 911S values at £200,000 for the very best this 911T represents value and this car is surely a great usable investment at this guide. Estimate (£): 45,000 - 55,000 Read more here.

Bonhams 4th Annual Scottsdale Sale Achieves $25-Million As Race-Winning Ferrari 275 GTB/C Makes New Model Record

With a nearly 90% sell-through rate, Bonhams sets multiple auction records in Arizona The stunningly beautiful, fast and historic 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Competizione that won its class at Le Mans, Spa and Imola zoomed to the forefront of Bonhams Scottsdale auction on Thursday, January 15th, and sold for $9,405,000, setting a new world auction record for the model and also making it one of the most valuable cars ever auctioned in Arizona. Held at the picturesque Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, Bonhams' fourth annual event was at full capacity with an audience of international bidders spilling outside the auction pavilion and onto the lawns where TV monitors broadcast the sale. Of the curated selection of 84 automobiles on offer, Ferrari – the grandest sporting marque of them all – was well represented as were notable motorcars from every era, many of which achieved very impressive results. The 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL "Gullwing" Coupe formerly owned by Lord O'Neill, Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, made $1,375,000 after it was the subject of spirited bidding from collectors in attendance and on the telephones. Another Teutonic gem that was the focus of intense interest was the silver 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster with red interior, which achieved $1,237,500. The very original 1964 Shelby Cobra 289 that had been in single-family ownership since new drew an enormous amount of attention and finally sold to a private American collection for $1,017,500. Representing veteran and vintage cars, a Humber and a Kissel realized new world auction records for their marques. The British-built 1904 Humber 8.5hp Twin-Cylinder Two-Seater made $148,500 while the American-built 1926 Kissel 6-55 Gold Bug Speedster sold for $286,000. Other notable results came from a 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300S Coupe that achieved $511,500, while a pair of Ferrari 512 BBi models, a 1982 and a 1984, made more than double their pre-auction estimates with the former making a new auction record for the model when it sold for $357,500. From Bonhams' popular automobilia section, a 1929 opalescent "Vitesse" glass mascot by René Lalique exceeded expectations when it was bought by an American collector for $35,000. Showing strong demand in the market, other items from the French house of Lalique also achieved robust results. THE VINCENT HRD SERIES-A RAPIDE ONCE RESCUED

FROM SCRAP NOW OFFERED AT BONHAMS STAFFORD

 

The penultimate pre-war 1939 Vincent HRD Series-A Rapide motorcycle rescued from scrap is now being offered, fully restored, for an estimated £220,000-260,000 at Bonhams Stafford Sale, taking place 26 April 2015.

 

The Vincent Series-A twin offered is the penultimate machine dispatched from the marques Stevenage factory before the outbreak of World War Two in 1939. There are only around 65 Series-A Vincent v-twins left in the world today, making this sale exceptionally rare.

 

The Vincent has remained in the family of motorcycle enthusiast Harry Lloyd since 1959, when it was purchased in exchange for a mere £10 and an Amal TT carburetor. Lloyd restored the bike to its former glory and used it for family trips around the United Kingdom. After a decade of use, the primary chain snapped when on a journey home through the suburbs of Liverpool, leaving the bike in need of repair. In 1968 the HRD was dismantled, pending future restoration, and stored in a lock-up garage in Liverpool.

 

A decade later, with the bike still in storage, an administrative error meant ownership of the garage had been allocated elsewhere. When Lloyd arrived, the padlocks had been cut-off of the garage and his bikes - including the HRD Series-A - were being loaded into a skip.

 

After much argument, it was decided that the bikes couldn’t be left, and so were transported back to Lloyd’s Liverpool home and stored in the rear bedroom, where they remained undisturbed for the next 15 years.

 

 

 

“In 2007 restoration of the Vincent finally began, but sadly Mr. Lloyd passed away before seeing the finished rebuild. No doubt he would have been very proud of the finished machine," said Ben Walker, International Director for Bonhams Motorcycle Department.

 

“Seven years of restoration have resulted in a magnificent motorcycle completed to Concours standard. Owned by the same family for the past fifty years, Bonhams Stafford sale offers a rare opportunity to acquire this highly desirable machine – one of the holy grails of the motorcycle world and a must for any major collection.”
