Porsche Take The Top Honours
There was the usual good turnout at Brightwells on Thursday 22nd June, a year almost to the day of the first Modern Classic. Much has been learnt since this inaugural sale, and this shows in how slick the sale now runs and the positive feedback received. Almost 70% of the 77 vehicles on offer were successfully hammered away to give a sale total of just under £417,000.
Top honours of the day went to the last of the breed, an air-cooled Porsche 993 generation 911 Turbo fetching £16k above bottom estimate to finish on £83,600. Speaking of Porsche, the brand was well represented, with a 15,200 mile 1 owner ’13 plate Cayman hitting £29,150 on the hammer and the wonderful blue 2007 Boxster 3.4 S making £17,600 post sale after attracting a flurry of interest.
It’s not just the high roller cars that attracted all the interest. We aim to offer a broad, diverse range of quality cars and one that also attracted a surprising amount of calls and interest was the 51,000-mile Volvo C70 convertible, which was offered at No Reserve, making a solid £1,980 on the hammer.
A rather smart and low mileage late model Bentley Brooklands attracted much interest with numerous commission bids battling it out with bidders in the room to make a healthy £11,880. A brace of BMW M-power cars did well considering these were almost unwanted models a few years ago when fuel was at £1.45/litre, showing that this classic, naturally aspirated “old-school” M-power brutes are gaining appeal and market prowess with canny investors, when various other Modern Classics in this price range have seemingly levelled off or even experienced a modest dip in recent months.
A pleasant surprise in this sale was the appearance of a cool old Nissan Z-car, the 1984 300ZX 3.0 Targa top, which made a pleasing £4,840, almost double what the vendor expected, showing that the recent market approval and hunger for retro-Japanese cars is continuing its renaissance.
Some of the cars are still being sold as this report goes to press, the audience perhaps forgetting that it’s not just about the results achieved under the hammer on the day, but some people simply cannot make the sale day, therefore others tend to sell hours and days after the sale, further improving the healthy sale conversion rate.
To illustrate the point, the very stealthy black Saab 9000 Aero by Abbott Racing sold a couple of days after the sale for a decent £4,400 plus commission, along with the very British Aston Martin DB7 Vantage Volante which made £24,750 despite being recorded as a cat-D write off some years ago. Healthy interest remains in the Alpina B3 S and we expect to conclude another sale there too.
The prices achieved include buyer’s premium.
