MOTORSPORT GREAT, SIR JOHN WHITMORE’S JAGUAR E-TYPE HEADS TO AUCTION

The Series 1 was purchased by Sir John in 1965 from Henlys Ltd of London. It was originally finished in Opalescent Golden Sand with a Red leather interior.

  • Beautiful 1965 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 4.2 FHC goes to auction at the September Sale
  • Originally owned by British motorsport great, Sir John Whitmore
  • The September Sale takes place at the prestigious Dallas Burston Polo Club on 29th September
An incredible 1965 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 4.2 FHC owned by British motorsport legend Sir John Whitmore is on its way to auction at the September Sale coming for the first time from the prestigious Dallas Burston Polo Club on 29th September.
Sir John Whitmore was a successful racing driver in the 50’s and 60’s, competing at Le Mans three times and winning the BSCC in 1961 in his first year in the series. Whitmore also won the 1965 ETCC in a Lotus Cortina by finishing first in class in eight of the nine races.
“It’s a great honour to offer a true motorsport great’s car at the September Sale,” says Joe Watts, classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions. “The sale of the car has become even more poignant since Sir John’s death in April last year. Even without Sir John’s involvement, this E-Type is fantastic and one of the most sympathetic combinations of ease of use upgrades and originality we have ever had the pleasure to offer for auction.”
The Series 1 was purchased by Sir John in 1965 from Henlys Ltd of London. Originally finished in Opalescent Golden Sand with a Red leather interior, the E-Type is now finished in a gorgeous shade of Carmen Red. Estimated at £90,000 to £110,000, the car has just returned from a complete glass out professional repaint and body restoration.
To ensure the car drives just as well as it looks a number of upgrades have been introduced, including a power steering rack, Spax adjustable shock absorbers and Coopercraft disc brakes.
Powered by a 4.2 litre straight six, the E-Type's speed and grace would have been no stranger to Whitmore. With a 0 to 60MPH time of just 7.6 seconds and a top speed of 150MPH, the E-Type is a quick car even by today’s standards. After a head gasket failure in 2012, the E-Type was taken in for a number of outstanding jobs including a full top end engine rebuild (prompted by the head gasket), some trim repairs, a new headlining, new exhaust and brackets. The total sum of the work reached £12,000.
Following the recent professional repaint and new chrome trim pieces, the E-Type presents to an impeccable standard and retains its original leather interior. To ensure the car drives just as well as it looks, a number of mechanical upgrades have been introduced, including a power steering rack, Spax adjustable shock absorbers and Coopercraft disc brakes. The original parts are included in the sale should the buyer wish to return the car to its original factory specification.
“Not often do classics with this level of heritage come to market making this an ideal opportunity to own a car that belonged to one of British motor sport’s all-time greats. The level of detail and care in this car’s rebuild shows the true passion for this beautiful iconic Jaguar and the respect for Sir John Whitmore himself,” concludes Simon.

International classic car auction house Coys have announced that their auctions at the London Classic Car Show and in Maastricht Holland are to be expanded with more exciting formats which will be unveiled shortly.

Chris Routledge of COYS said, "Having worked closely with the organizers of Interclassics over many years, and having been both an exhibitor and auction partner with the London Classic Car show since the first event we feel the time is right to focus solely on these two major European specialist classic car events due to the exceptional quality of the historic automobiles that will be on show and the knowledgeable audience that will attend these two events."

He added: "We will be introducing new features at both shows that will really excite the European market."

“Sadly we will not be returning to Autosport International in Birmingham having been there for many years. The changes in ownership and management at Autosport are clear to see as is the direction the show is going with its mass-market approach to motorsport which we feel not compatible with our brand and clients, but nonetheless, we wish them well

RARE RUFS ARE RARING TO GO AT THE PORSCHE SALE 2018

RARE RUFS ARE RARING TO GO AT
THE PORSCHE SALE 2018

  • A pair of very rare, highly exclusive RUF sports cars are heading to the Porsche Sale 2018 in association with Porsche Club GB
  • A rare BTR2 993 Turbo and the famous RTurbo Nurburgring press car will go under the hammer
  • The Porsche Sale 2018 is happening on 28th September at the Dallas Burston Polo Club

Two very special RUF sports cars will be on offer in Silverstone Auctions Porsche Sale in association with Porsche Club GB. A rare 1998 RUF BTR2 993 Turbo and a 2002 RUF RTurbo used by the manufacturer for the Nurburgring press video will be on offer at the Dallas Burston Polo Club on 28th September.
“RUFs are a very special breed of vehicle. When you take a car as well respected as a Porsche and try to improve it, it can lead to some incredible results,” says Harry Whale, classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions. “The pair of RUFs on offer at the Porsche Sale are truly impeccable examples, one from a single ownership and a vendor who has clearly cared for the car dearly, and another which is famous around the world for appearing in RUFs own promotional material, taking on the legendary ‘Green Hell’, the Nurburgring. We couldn’t ask for two better examples of RUFs unbeatable engineering prowess and skill.”
The 2002 RUF RTurbo on offer is an original factory press car and featured in the promotional video ‘RUF RTurbo Nurburgring Lap’ and is also featured on the cover of Marc Bonger’s book ‘Porsche and RUF Sportscars’. This RTurbo has a 3.6 litre flat-six engine producing 550BHP and 575lb/ft of torque, a six-speed manual gearbox and four-wheel-drive. Estimated at £180,000 to £220,000, this RTurbo retains its original Speed Yellow paintwork with a black leather interior. As part of a private collection for the past few years, the car has been incredibly well cared for, covering only 48,197km (29,948 miles).
“Very few RUFs on the market can claim this heritage and provenance. The RTurbo retains its incredible performance and subtle looks and is a fantastic opportunity to purchase a piece of RUFs history at the Porsche Sale,” Harry says.
One of only five right-hand drive cars in existence, the 1998 BTR2 993 Turbo on offer at the sale is an incredibly rare machine. Only 15 BTR2 coupes were built in total and this one owner car presents a highly attractive proposition. Estimated at £150,000 to £200,000 this very special car was built to our vendors very exacting specification including the addition of an intergrated roll cage and EKS electronic clutch system.
The car has been thoroughly serviced throughout its life, always returning to the RUF factory for servicing every 12,000 miles, whilst interim and minor works have been carried out by OPC and Porsche specialist workshops. Powered by a 3.6 litre flat-six, the BTR2 produces 420BHP, is capable of 0 to 60MPH in just 4.1 seconds and can go on to a top speed of 191MPH. The aerodynamics, suspension, wheels and brakes were all specially developed for the BTR2. Finished in Arctic Silver with a Charcoal leather interior, this classic RUF-made car combines a purposeful if discreet appearance with exceptional engineering and ballistic performance, truly not one to miss.
“This is a highly exclusive opportunity. RUFs are already rare and this incredibly special example is one of only five in the world. A car this well cared for makes this a truly unmissable chance,” concludes Harry.

SEPTEMBER HIGHLIGHT
THE MOST VALUABLE CAR EVER SOLD AT AUCTION
RM SOTHEBY’S SELLS FERRARI 250 GTO FOR $48.4 MILLION
AT RECORD-SETTING $158 MILLION MONTEREY SALE

  • RM Sotheby’s sets new world record for the most valuable car ever sold at auction with $48.4 million Ferrari 250 GTO
  • 250 GTO sale leads one of RM Sotheby’s most successful auctions to date, with Monterey totalling $158 million
  • Highly anticipated two-day sale sees several exciting results, including $21.5 million Aston Martin DP215, and $9.8 million Ford GT40
  • Complete Monterey results at rmsothebys.com
  • The RM Sotheby’s Group continues its summer calendar with Auburn Fall and London auctions

RM Sotheby’s celebrated a historic weekend in Monterey (24-25 August) with a new record for the most valuable car ever sold at auction, selling a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO for $48,405,000. The 250 GTO championed RM Sotheby’s most historic Monterey offering to date, which resulted in an overall total of $157,931,940 – one of the company’s all-time top performances, the highest grossing auction of Monterey Car Week, and a near 19 per cent increase over 2017 results at the same venue.

RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction drew considerable international interest in the months leading up to the event, welcoming bidders from 37 countries and seeing 83 per cent of all cars offered to find new homes. The collector car world flocked to Monterey to witness the momentous lineup in person, with more than 90 per cent of bidders present at the preview and in the packed room, despite remote bidding options.

The thrilling two-day sale was led by the remarkable 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis no. 3413 GT, long considered to be the ‘holy grail’ of the collector car world and offered from two decades in the collection of noted businessman, Ferrari enthusiast, and vintage racing driver Dr Gregory Whitten, which sold for $48,405,000, becoming the most valuable car ever sold at auction. This exceeds the previous record by more than $10 million. There were cheers and applause when five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell stepped out of the car after driving it across the auction block in front of an overflowing salesroom, followed by gasps as auctioneer Maarten ten Holder opened the bidding at the unprecedented level of $35 million. Three collectors bidding via telephone competed for the car, sometimes moving in million-dollar increments before it sold for a final $48,405,000 after nearly ten minutes.

“The appearance of any one of the Ferrari 250 GTO, Aston Martin DP215, Ford GT40, or McLaren F1 and Ferrari 275 P on the Private Sales stand would be a major event, but to have them all together at Monterey this weekend was nothing short of historic,” said Kenneth Ahn, President, RM Sotheby’s, following the auction. “We are deeply appreciative of our clients who have entrusted RM Sotheby’s to offer some of the most significant motor cars to ever come to market and equally grateful to our clients, enthusiasts, and media who travelled from all over the world to attend our sale. There was an unprecedented value of cars offered on the Monterey Peninsula this year, and it was very encouraging to see the level of strong demand across a broad range of great cars – a sign of strength that is very positive for our clients as well as the larger collector automobile market.”

Additional stand-out moments were found throughout the two-day sale, including when the one-off 1963 Aston Martin DP215 Grand Touring Competition Prototype roared onto RM Sotheby’s stage and achieved a final $21,455,000 (est. $18m/22m) following a high-energy bidding contest, becoming one of the most valuable British motor cars sold at auction. The pinnacle achievement for Aston Martin’s racing program and the last competition car built during the David Brown era, DP215 contested Le Mans in 1963 with Phil Hill and Lucien Bianchi behind the wheel, where it became the first automobile to break the 300 kph barrier at the event. RM Sotheby’s also took the opportunity to announce that the company will be partnering with Aston Martin in 2019, presenting an additional Thursday night auction during next year’s Monterey weekend, dedicated specifically to Aston Martin. As the official auction partner of Aston Martin, RM Sotheby’s will celebrate the marque’s 1959 win at Le Mans with an offering of the finest road-going and track-ready cars from its illustrious history.

From great American Classics through historic racers and the rarest of modern supercars, landmark prices were achieved across the 150 cars presented at RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale. The 1966 Ford GT40 Mk II, chassis no. P/1016, part of the iconic trio of GT40s that swept first, second, and third overall at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, reached $9,795,000 on Friday evening. The 1957 Porsche 550A Spyder, a hugely important car in Porsche’s American racing history, soared to high estimate on Saturday to sell for $4,900,000, and a unique 1956 Maserati A6G/2000 Zagato racer fetched $4,515,000, a new record for the model at auction. Modern super cars showed continued strength with a U.S.-spec 1990 Ferrari F40 selling for an above-estimate $1,710,000, and the one-of-25 1998Mercedes-Benz AMG CLK GTR smashing the previous record for the model at $4,515,000. RM Sotheby’s was also proud to partner with Mercedes-AMG in Monterey to offer a never-raced 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT3 ‘Laureus’. The chrome finished GT3 exceeded expectations, selling for a final $885,000, with proceeds to benefit the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.

  • RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale continues Saturday, 25 August at 5:30pm PST, headlined by offering of 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO

Monterey, California (24 August 2018) – This evening in Monterey, California, RM Sotheby’s sold the one-off 1963 Aston Martin DP215 Grand Touring Competition Prototype for $21,455,000 (est. $18m/22m), becoming one of the most valuable British motor cars sold at auction.

Developed specifically to contest the 24 Hours of Le Mans, DP215 was the pinnacle achievement for Aston Martin’s racing program. The last competition car built during the David Brown era, the car raced at Le Mans in 1963 with Phil Hill and Lucien Bianchi behind the wheel, where it became the first automobile to break the 300 kph barrier at the event. Restored with the consultation of original designer Ted Cutting, DP215 has been reunited with its original engine and a new correct-type gearbox and was presented in Monterey by enthusiastic owners Neil and Nigel Corner. After drawing significant attention in the lead up to the Monterey auction and during the pre-sale exhibition, DP215 was the subject of a ten-minute contest drawing four bidders in the room and on telephones. However, it was two determined collectors bidding through RM Sotheby’s specialists who drew gasps from the packed salesroom as increment-breaking bids were called out in an attempt to secure the car which eventually sold with applause to a private collector.

RM Sotheby’s announced that the company will be partnering with Aston Martin in 2019, presenting an additional Thursday night auction during next year’s Monterey weekend, dedicated specifically to Aston Martin. As the official auction partner of Aston Martin, RM Sotheby’s will celebrate the marque’s 1959 win at Le Mans with an offering of the finest road-going and track-ready cars from its illustrious history. Additional information will be announced in the months ahead.

Additional highlights from the Friday evening sale session included the 1966 Ford GT40 Mk II, chassis no. P/1016, which achieved $9,795,000 on the podium. The GT40 was part of the iconic trio of GT40s that earned first, second and third for Ford’s clean sweep at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. Day one further proved the strength of important American automobiles from all eras with a commanding $3,745,000 for the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Best of Show winning 1934 Packard Twelve Individual Custom and  $1,820,000 achieved for the 1948 Tucker 48, one of just 47 examples extant.

DP215 led the Friday session of RM Sotheby’s most historic Monterey offering to date,. The auction continues Saturday, 25 August at the newly renovated Monterey Conference Center, headlined by the presentation of a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, poised to become the most valuable automobile ever sold at auction. Official results will be available following the sale. For further information on the Monterey auction, please visit rmsothebys.com.

FORZA LaFERRARI ULTIMATE FERRARI SUPERCARS TO HEADLINE BONHAMS GOODWOOD REVIVAL SALE

FORZA LaFERRARI

ULTIMATE FERRARI SUPERCARS TO HEADLINE

BONHAMS GOODWOOD REVIVAL SALE

Top: 2017 Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta (£5,000,000-6,500,000) Bottom: 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari Coupé (£2,300,000-2,800,000)

On 8 September at its Goodwood Revival Sale, Bonhams will offer two of the most highly sought-after, powerful and collectable supercars of the modern age. The 2017 Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta is estimated at £5,000,000-6,500,000 and the 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari Coupé at £2,300,000-2,800,000This is only the second time in history that a LaFerrari Aperta has been offered at public auction.

Widely recognized as one of the most important supercars created in the past decade, the LaFerrari represents the pinnacle of Ferrari’s longstanding supercar heritage. Drawing on F1-derived engineering and design, the LaFerrari caused a frenzy when it was first released and became an instant classic.

The 2015 example is finished in Grigio Reventon Lucido, a stunning metallic gunmetal grey with an elegantly accenting Piano black centre section and black and red interior – it has covered just 5,900km. The striking futuristic design is complemented by its hulking V12 hybrid engine that produces an astonishing 963bhp at 9,250rpm and is capable of more than 200mph.

The 2017 Aperta is the ultimate evolution of the groundbreaking model, and only 210 were ever created. Finished in Nero Daytona with a red and black interior, this is a true Ferrari masterpiece and a very low mileage example with a mere 510km on the odometer. This is only the second occasion on which a LaFerrari Aperta has been offered at public auction, making this an unmissable opportunity for a serious ferrarista to add one of the most collectable cars ever created to their stable.

2012 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport (£1,400,000-1,900,000)

The Goodwood Revival sale will see an astonishing range of supercars and historic racers crossing the rostrum, including a 2012 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport (£1,400,000-1,900,000), 1990 Jaguar XJR-11 Sportscar Prototype (£1,200,000-1,500,000), a 1964 AC/Shelby Competition Cobra (£1,200,000-1,500,000) and the ex-Alan Mann Racing Team 1968-69 Type Ford P68 F3L Group 6 Endurance Racing Coupé (£500,000-700,000)

FORMER BEAULIEU STAR IN AUCTION AT INTERNATIONAL AUTOJUMBLE

CLASSIC CHATTER

AUCTION NEWS

FORMER BEAULIEU STAR IN AUCTION
AT INTERNATIONAL AUTOJUMBLE

1908 Phoenix Sports

September 1st & 2nd
A 115-year old veteran car that was once a star exhibit in Beaulieu's collection will go under the hammer at Bonhams auction at International Autojumble on Saturday, September 1st.
The 1903 Panhard et Levassor 7hp Type A was a star exhibit in the National Motor Museum's forerunner, the Montagu Motor Museum, throughout the 1960s and a favourite with thousands of visitors before being sold in the 1970s. Five decades on, the early French motor is estimated to sell for £170,000 - £200,000 as part of the sale of rare and desirable cars.

Double award-winning International Autojumble, which takes place across the weekend of September 1st and 2nd and has been running for more than 50 years, offers more than 2,000 stands packed with classic car spares, motoring books and automobilia. Automart will see a line-up of around 200 classic cars for sale, while Dealermartfeatures a selection of top condition classics from traders.
The Bonhams auction is a highlight on Saturday and this year offers 130 vehicles on sale. Edward, Lord Montagu previously purchased the Panhard et Levassor for his newly extended Montagu Motor Museum at an auction in the grounds of Palace House in 1960. The finely engineered car with a two-cylinder engine, three forward speeds and chain drive to the rear wheels, was used for numerous motoring events during its time at Beaulieu and became perhaps the most illustrated Panhard et Levassor ever, depicted on Beaulieu postcards, placemats and in the museum guidebook.
Other star lots in the Bonhams sale include a 1924 Bentley 3-Litre Speed Tourer – an iconic sports car with a fascinating history which is estimated to achieve £250,000 - £300,000. Equally fascinating but much smaller is a 1908 Phoenix 10hp Sports, a diminutive British-built runabout fitted with a charming wooden boat-tail body, with a reserve of £12,000 - £15,000.
An unexpected piece of automotive history is a water-going craft, a 1911 racing hydroplane powered by a vintage Vauxhall engine which is estimated to reach £35,000 - £40,000. A very different machine is a 1978 Ford Fiesta Mk1 with just 127 miles on the clock, expected to reach £6,000 - £8,000. There are several projects on offer, including a desirable 1959 Jaguar XK150 ‘S’ 3.4 litre in barn-find condition, which has been off the road since 1975 and is predicted to fetch £70,000 - £90,000. Historic motorcycles and automobilia, including vintage petrol pumps, toolkits, badges, mascots, posters, brochures and books, will also go under the hammer. Admission to the saleroom is by pre-booked catalogue only. To register in advance see www.bonhams.com/auctions/24877/.

A special feature at this year’s International Autojumble will be a display celebrating the 50th anniversary of the legendary Morgan Plus 8, as the Morgan Sports Car Club showcases a selection of its members’ cars which is sure to please British sports car fans.
A highlight at Sunday’s event is Trunk Traders when enthusiasts sell assorted motoring jumble from their garages, sheds and lofts.
