SILVERSTONE AUCTIONS: The Race Retro Sale results

Records fall at Race Retro auction

Our first auction of the year was a resounding success, achieving a total sales value of more than £3.62million and a sales rate of 78 per cent at Race Retro.

Buyers from around the globe fought hard to secure the stunning cars that were on offer at Europe’s premier historic motorsport show, helping us achieve no less than five world record prices. Low mileage Italian classics proved particularly in demand along with classic 911s, a host of ‘fast’ Fords as well as historic racing cars.

You can view the full set of results from the weekend’s sale here.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended the sale and congratulate all those successful bidders.  We’re now inviting entries into our sale at The Practical Classics Restoration Show which takes place on 28th March. You can find out more here.

We do hope to see you at our next sale but for now read on for some of the amazing prices that were paid this weekend.

1991 Ferrari Testarossa - Pre-sale estimate £130,000-£150,000: SOLD £202,500

This very special Testarossa more than lived up to its pre-sale interest and was sold for a new world record price. With just 960 miles from new, the time warp car was in demand from collectors around the world eventually selling for more than £50,000 over its upper estimate.

1999 Ferrari 456M - Pre-sale estimate £75,000-£90,000: SOLD £118,125

Another stunning low mileage car from Maranello, this Ferrari 456M with just 400 miles from new sailed past its estimate selling for an amazing total and another world record price.

1991 Alfa Romeo SZ - Pre-sale estimate £50,000-£70-000: SOLD £84,938

One of the maddest cars of the 1990s, this rare unregistered Alfa Romeo SZ encompassed everything about a ‘time-capsule' car. With the odometer showing a mere 808 km, the car sold for more than £30,000 over its lower estimate, setting another world record.

1991 Ferrari Mondial T - Pre-sale estimate £50,000 – £70,000: SOLD £59,625

Sold for another world record price, this factory fresh Mondial T was presented in exquisite condition and proves that the market is beginning to recognise these cars as the next Ferrari star.

1965 Triumph ‘Thruxton' Bonneville - Pre-sale estimate £16,000 – £18,000: SOLD £21,938

Number nine of only 52 ever made, we were delighted to offer this rare 1965 Triumph ‘Thruxton' Bonneville which broke the fifth world record of the sale, reaching an impressive £21, 938.

1988 BMW M3 Evo II - Pre-sale estimate £38,000 – £42,000: SOLD £48,938

Supplied with new tyres, a fresh MoT and a January 2015 service by main dealer BMW Watford, this 80s icon went on to fetch more than £10,000 over its lower estimate price. Considering its rarity and the faultless restoration the car had received, it is no surprise that the desirable model was so popular at auction.

1973 Porsche 911 2.4S - Pre-sale estimate £90,000 - £110,000: SOLD £114,750

This highly desirable 1973 Porsche 911 2.4S, coming with an extensive history file, sold for £114,750; a substantial £24,750 ahead of its lower estimate price of £90, 000. With value and interest in Targas rising, this car promised to be an exciting investment opportunity for collectors.

1993 Jaguar XJ220-Pre-sale estimate £165,000 - £185,000: SOLD £186,750

One of only 281 of these iconic supercars ever built, this car cut an impressively exciting figure when compared with today's standard of supercar. It therefore comes as no surprise that this iconic low mileage model went to on to beat even its highest estimate price.
